What resources do you expect from a tutor?

I'm looking to start tutoring in physics this year but I am worried about my potential to help students. Do students expect a bunch of notes, tests, etc. from their tutors? Coming from year 12, I don't have much of these things.

Whilst admittedly I didn't take physics but did do some tutoring, I think the most important thing in a tutor is their ability to understand content in the context of VCE education and be able to explain that to a range of student capabilities. Students are capable of accessing textbooks, exams and other study material if you don't have them, and they'll have textbooks and class notes from school. Whilst you might be able to charge more or whatever if you produce your own test materials or provide 'perfect' notes, I honestly wouldn't pay for that because I can get that from anywhere but you can't get a good teacher from anywhere.

If you don't have or aren't willing to prepare tests for your students, use a foundation of your own notes from school to teach from (photocopy for students if you like) and maybe source some AN topic tests or something else to give students problems to do!

If you think you've got the background knowledge and teaching ability to be a good tutor, go for it, don't stress about the need for anything else!

Totally agree with babushka818  ;D From my experience as a tutor, whilst I also have plenty of resources, students comment more on enjoying my teaching style. What's far more important in a tutor is their ability to break down complex topics and create a comfortable environment where students can ask whatever questions they like.

Having said that though, some students actively want to challenge themselves with more resources their schools don't provide. As I'm sure you will be, it's important to be transparent with your students. Let them know upfront in your tutoring post/ before the first lesson about your tutoring style.

Good luck! The very fact that you're considering this shows your sincere consideration for your students- what I believe to be a vital trait as a tutor ;D

Personally I think resources are sometimes a bit of a gimmick. Out of a tutor, students just expect someone to teach them well. Focus on that and you'll be fine.
