how much do we need to know about frequency modulation?

does anyone know? because it came up as a question in the "CSE May test 2008" practice exam. it gave us a modulated frequency(ie carrier wave plus info wave) and we had to figure out what the demodulated frequency(ie original info wave) looked like. and it also asked us to calculate the frequency of the wave?!?
is that even on the course?
any help on this matter will be highly appreciated.

that one gave me a headache >< my teacher just said that the formula f = 1 / T is the most expected to know since this is kinda unit 4 stuff anyway...

simplistic approach:

take the top half of the wave, find the mean position, draw a line through it then imagine that is 0

tada~ the outline is the demodulated wave
