How to achieve the best score I possibly can for HHD?

Hello! I have just finished my unit 1/2 studies and I am now moving onto units 3/4. A lot of my friends have completed units 3/4 HHD in Year 11 and, despite achieving high 90s and 100s for SACs throughout the year and achieving an A+ on GA 1 2 and 3, they still managed a study score they were disappointed with (low 40s to high 30s). I am really afraid that, in spite of putting all of the effort in to achieve high scores, I won't achieve a high study score and scaling will affect my final score!
My real question here is, how can I study the best I possibly can to absolutely ace every single SAC and the final exam so I am not placed into this position? Although raw low-40s is still fantastic, I want to ensure that I am not scaled down so much and that the efforts I put into the subject are reflected in what I achieve at the end of next year! Those who had achieved mid-high 40s or a 50, how did you approach every SAC and exam and how did you study efficiently to secure that score? Thanks!  :D

Hi! I received a study score of 50 in HHD this year.

I honestly do not think I could have gotten a 50 if I didn’t love the subject so much. This obviously isn’t the do all or end all, as other people get a 50 and don’t necessarily like HHD. However, my love for the content meant that it sunk in quite easy. I would really encourage you to think about WHY you want a 50 in this subject specifically. That will help you to achieve your goal.

In terms of my approach to SACs and the exam, it was pretty much in two stages. Firstly, I’d learn all the necessary definitions off by heart using Quizlet. In my opinion, unit 3 has more definitions and content to memorise than unit 4, so keep that in mind. Secondly, put what you’ve learned into a meaningful form. I used to have discussions with my teachers about the different outcomes of a particular case study or disease. Just find something that works for you so that the information really sinks in.

Take advantage of the fact that HHD is so focused on the real world. Make sure you don’t just memorise the content but that you truly understand it. VCAA are going to mix up the study design in ways that don’t make sense (example: the question with iron and the interrelationships of health and wellbeing on the 2019 exam) so you need to be confident with the material.

Hope this helps! Happy to answer any other questions.

Thank you so much for your input!  :D How much studying would you say you dedicated toward HHD this year? Would you consistently study every night or dedicate certain days? Would you study 1 week prior to SACs instead of throughout the year?

I would start studying about 3 weeks before a SAC. 1 week to memorise content on quizlet, 2 weeks to practice questions. For the exam it was about 3 weeks of answering questions once I memorised content. It’s really important you don’t peak too early in HHD because it’s a subject where the content is fairly easy to understand and it’ll become stale in your mind if you’re ready for the exam 2 months in advance.

With 5 subjects, I didn’t study every night for Health, but the SACs were about 2 months apart so I would be going through the above process fairly regularly. Don’t study for the sake of it with HHD, make sure the content is fresh in your head. If you feel ready for the SAC/exam, trust yourself and take a slower pace by just reading over things and answering light questions.
