Title: HELP!! - Assessment Mark Question!!
Post by: wallyball97 on October 01, 2020, 07:29:32 pm
Hello!
So I have a question:
Say these were my internal marks for HSC (I’m ranked second) for a subject like Physics:
Rando: 92
Me: 90.8 (there’s a 1.2% gap)
and then in the HSC our marks were:
Rando: 90
Me: 94

As I’m ranked second and assuming the 90 was the second highest exam mark - would my internal mark become 90 as well? And then balance out with my 94 to become 92 overall? Or would it take into account the relative gaps between the assessment marks and my internal assessment mark would be higher?

Would really appreciate some help on this pls

A common misconception about the calculation of internal marks is something along the lines of 'I ranked second internally, I'm going to get the second highest external mark as my internal'. Not the case.

Your next suggestion isn't 100% correct but is a close enough interpretation that it's generally okay to take as gospel. Your internal might turn out to be higher or lower depending on the performance of the rest of your cohort. You're correct in saying that whatever your internal happens to be will be averaged with your scaled external to give your HSC mark.

Hope this clarifies things, and hope to see you around more on the forums :)
