I love music- both old and new, but I really want to know: what are the *greatest* pieces of music of all time, and why?

I'll provide my thoughts later ;D

American Pie by Don McLean is a classic. The lyrics are meaningful, and the song always gets stuck in your head. It makes me nostalgic for a time I never knew.

For albums, probably Kick by INXS. Every song is a hit, and they're all fun to sing to. It has a great range of feels, from seductive ('Need You Tonight') to longing ('Never Tear Us Apart') to happy ('New Sensation').

Lastly, Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes because 'Straya.

I personally think the best music of all times are the pieces that have defined genres - and usually this ends up being collections of works, as opposed to individual pieces.

For example, anything from The Beatles, or Elvis, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson. Then there's also some more obscure stuff (usually not by much, particularly if this is the kind of music you listen to), but going to pieces from Jack Pastorius, and Stevie Wonder.

Sure, all of these artists will have individual songs that people will know better, or give more acclaim, but personally I think it's more the artist themselves that leads to these songs being the "greatest of all time".

(I forgot to come back to this... oops)
Personally for me-
Song: You're the Voice- John Farnham. No idea why, but classic.
Album: Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run. Just calls to me as pretty great.
Lastly: for old politicians and their music: Beds are Burning- Midnight Oil

Lastly, Working Class Man by Jimmy Barnes because 'Straya.
Oath.

I would say that I am personally a classical music fan, and for me one of the greatest pieces of music of all time is Gustav Holst's The Planets suite. Throughout it you can see the influence that it has had on composers such as John Williams. In recent music it has got to be one of the most influential pieces of all time, besides just being an absolutely awesome piece.
