Can't go wrong with either player but for the sake of argument I will say Ronaldo:

*Has proven himself in La Liga and EPL.

*Doesn't disappoint when representing his nation (carries Portugal on his back whereas Messi has done nothing for Argentina).

*Right now is clearly the best player. 17 goals / 5 Assists this season in UCL is ridiculous.

*Ronaldo has better heading ability which gives him another dimension to his game.

*I would say Messi is a more clinical finisher but it's hard not to be when receiving weekly service from Xavi + Iniesta.

*Is a better athlete.

I'd like to see Messi play in a different league to see if he could adjust to different styles of play. The EPL is very physical and I wonder if Messi could cope with such a style of play. Or even a very tactical league like Serie A where even the bottom placed sides can set up an extremely organised defence. Oh and without Xavi + Iniesta providing service.

i completely agree, messi wouldnt be able to cope with the rigours of epl, due not being as physical in his play, and also messi absolutely tanked at the world cup in south africa, he didnt even score one goal in the competition

Well he certainly wouldn't score as many goals. Of course he would still be a GREAT player. Messi struggled against Diego Simeone’s hard-working and compact Atletico Madrid side. Other teams in La Liga just sit back and let Barca totally dictate the game. Many technical players have had great difficulty in adjusting to the EPL style of play.

And I don't think you can overlook the fact that he has received weekly service from Xavi + Iniesta. Ronaldo has proved he can perform with United and also Real. Not to mention playing with Portugal as well. Which is why Messi needs to have a good outing at this year's World Cup. Because if this Argentina side does nothing in South America (given their easy draw), you would have to start questioning Messi's legacy.

You make a point but  soccer would not be called a team sport if it just needed one guy to win the match.

So I guess the real question should be - which team is the greatest? Not which player

They're both really great players, no doubt about that. But in terms of contribution to the team, I think Ronaldo would win this(by a slight margin), mainly due to the fact that he has pretty good players to assist him like Bale, Di Maria and Xabi Alonso.
Endure the pain of discipline now, or suffer the pain of regret later.

Messi v Ronaldo debate has been around for like ages ><"
I don't know specifically why, but I feel Ronaldo wins this slightly. Ronaldo's definitely the better athlete, and footballer in quite a few different aspects (although not by THAT much). But...Messi's ball handling skills are amazing at times. O.O
