Title: Which subject to drop?
Post by: Blazeee on June 01, 2017, 08:55:29 pm
Heyo :D
Currently doing year 11, but the time is coming up to decide which subject to drop and I need to decide which one so I can focus more attention toward my more important A-grade subjects. I definitely do want to drop one, I'm not really enjoying Business Studies and Financial Services! Any comments?

The subjects I'm currently enrolled in are:
Modern History (LOVE IT!!)
Advanced English (awesome!)
Mathematics
Senior Science
Business Studies
Financial Services

Hey Courtney! Which do you dislike more out of Business Studies and Financial Services? Or is it about the same? Always drop the subject you enjoy the least! ;D

Here is an article on choosing the subjects to take forward to Year 12! I hope it is helpful :)

Yeah sorta about the same. I'm probably more motivated to do more toward Business Studies because I know it counts toward my ATAR and it will be more beneficial to me, but yeah I will probably end up focusing more on my other subjects that I enjoy more. I've always regarded Financial as a slack subject, mainly because I have little interest for the content.

Riight, well it being more beneficial for you is not the best reason to choose it, if you hate it that is. But if you have no interest at all in Financial, and you think Business will serve you better in the long term, perhaps dropping Financial is the way to go? ;D

If you're loving Mod History then consider doing Extension if you're able to make it. I think you'll love it more :)

I would drop Financial if you feel that you have no motivation to do it. How are you doing in all of your subjects?

To be honest, I would recommend trying to keep it for the first term and see how you go with all your other subjects in year 12. And if you reaaallly think that you should drop it, then drop it in term 2. And I agree with Wales, I do modern history and extension history, so I can definitely say that if you love modern, then you will love history extension!

Awesome feedback guys! Thanks!!
but wow i love modern history but wouldn't doing extension history be kinda like shooting myself in the foot?  :o Is it way more work? And would i have to do an extra exam?

If you're good at it you *should* enjoy it as well as benefit from the scaling of it. It's up to you though.

Extension History is a lot of work and is an extra exam, but if you love history go for it! sudodds would probably be the best person to ask, she did Extension History and loved it ;D

yo yo yo

If you enjoy Modern History I highly recommend giving History Extension a go! As Jamon said, it is a lot of work (the major more so than the exam!) however it is really one of the most rewarding courses - changed my perspective on a lot of things :) Remember that it is NOT another history course though, it is historiography, so it requires a lot of outside reading, not only of history but of historiographical theory (eg. postmodernism, objectivism). It won't be structured in the same way as Modern - it's quite a lot more independent. If you have any questions feel free to pop them over here: History Extension Question Thread and I'll be happy to answer :)

Im doing 13 units and achieving well in next to all, but I really dontenjoy legal studies and want to drop but still have a good rank and mark atm.

I do 4 units of English and 3 units of history do you think it would be a smart choice to drop?

Although I achieve relatively well in legal (88,93,92) I really do not enjoy the course work and feel like its so time heavy!!

I just want to make the most effective choice possible, any suggestions are appreciated!

Hey Marcus! Normally I'd say that you should drop Legal, but you are really close to the end now! Especially with such good results, I'd be careful before dropping it, only because you've already invested a lot of time into it by this stage! :)

Ultimately it is your call! If you feel Legal is really adding to your stress, then perhaps it would be a good move - But I'd only do it if absolutely necessary! :)

Well... i enjoy all the subjects that i do... but i guess science and business would be the most content heavy, however they are probably the easiest!!!
so then it would depend on the scaling of the courses... would it? :o

I usually don't like to pick a course based on scaling. The introduction of scaling is to prevent people from that idea :) If you can choose a low scaling subject and do well you get rewarded as well.

Just pick the ones you feel you enjoy most. If you enjoy them both equally then I would consider teacher and class environment, after that scaling would be a consideration but it's so minor anyway.

Unless you're talking Ext 2 Maths vs General scaling shouldn't be too big of a concern :)

Hey! I know what you're going through. I spent the whole of year 11 and first term of year 12 deciding whether I should drop PDH or French extension. It ultimately came down to what I want to do after school. So, what do you want to do after school? Whatever you do, don't do 14 units. Just don't. I reckon the best solution would be keep all your subjects which you're currently doing. Pick up extension history and see how much you really like it. You'd hate to do it and realise how much you miss whichever subject you choose to drop. If you're thinking of doing extension history, which is a major work, you should drop a content heavy subject like Business or senior science. But again, it depends on what you want to do! But, this is a very bias opinion, don't drop German. Languages scale so well and look good on Uni applications!

Hi Courtney, I don't think your results in modern history will get you anywhere in extension history. But you can do what ever, you can If you want, I just wouldn't encourage it for you

I don't think she revealed her marks? Either way that is just not true at all. Despite the name, Modern and Extension are actually extremely different subjects! There was a girl in my extension class who was averaging 60 in modern, who was receiving mid-80s in extension. As it is such an independently driven subject the important and only deciding factor in my opinion is how passionate you are and whether you are willing to put the effort and work into doing well :)

Yeah true I didn't tell my marks...however I am doing really well! (last exam I got 92%...top of my NSW class)
Our teacher talked to us about Extension History just this week actually...and to my delight she described it as everything I imagined it to be! The topics look awesome...especially the Ancient Egypt one!  ::) ::) I think I'm definitely going to do it...just need to find a way to drop both Business Studies and Financial Services, but apparently we have to do at least one business subject...which sucks!

AWESOME STUFF! 92% is an absolutely fantastic mark for half yearlies! And typically you only improve from there :D And yay!! So glad you're considering extension, it is a great course (feel free to come over to the history extension board with me to discuss any time ;) ). Why do you NEED to have at least one business subject? I've never heard of that being a requirement before?

Even though you did well in your exam, I still believe you don't have what it takes to do extension 1 history. It just wouldn't work for you with your knowledge. Don't have such big expectations for yourself Courtney.

Considering I'm actually Mrs. Taylor...I'm curious to know who you are?
Title: Re: Which subject to drop?

This doesn't sound like the helpful, friendly, encouraging AN community I'm familiar with...everyone should have the opportunity to try new things and extend their knowledge and skills. Courtney sounds like she did very well in her last exam, and I don't see why she shouldn't give History Extension a go.
Maybe there is something I am not seeing in this scenario, but I think it is unfair to tell her to lower her expectations of herself.

It does seem weird and unfriendly. Don't listen.

Courtney, take the opportunity. You don't want to look back and regret you never took Ext History :)

I hope everything has been sorted out on your end Courtney.

Ok well I'm totally coping the blame here.

After seeing the ridiculous stuff being posted by the impersonator above, decided to ban that user. I thought to myself; 'surely, there is no teacher in the world good enough to get onto a forum to defend their student on a Sunday night?'. I was totally wrong

I have unbanned your teacher, and seriously apologise. It was a weird situation, and I made the wrong call. I'll PM you now, but sorry that you had to deal with any of this. Think about how self-centred, and just sad, a person has to be to put down a fellow classmate on the internet.

That is definitely not an HSC rule - maybe your school enforces it (that'd be really weird haha - not a normal subject to enforce), but other than that there should be no reason why you HAVE to study a business subject! So yayayayayaya MORE HISTORY!!!!!

Keep us updated! For sure you'll be able too - never heard of a school enforcing a business subject. English yeah, SOR sure if you go to a religious school, and I know of some agricultural schools that enforce agriculture, but never business. But yeah, let us know how it goes!
