Title: How will Queensland affect ATAR next year?
Post by: lorennnz on December 09, 2018, 01:29:21 pm
So Queensland converting from using a separate tertiary entrance score system (OP) from the rest of Australia to using the ATAR system. How do you think this will affect the ATAR rankings next year? Will it dilute the system so that the same scores this year will have a lower ATAR next year? Or will it stay the same since Queensland scores would be normally distributed as well?

I was just thinking about it and was curious 😁 maybe it won’t affect it at all

Thanks!

If you're in NSW or VIC I don't think it will affect it all. I could be wrong but because each state has a different system all the ATAR's are calculated separately; that is you're only be ranked against those in your state. And in terms of atar cut-offs for uni I don't think that will be affected either because previously the OP people were accounted for anyway.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

My theory is that, since there is no way to compare performance  across states with the varying curriculums, the ATAR just assumes that the top x% of students in the state get 99.95 and top y% get 99.90 etc. I don’t think there will be any change if you are in other states. Not sure how this will affect Queensland but strong students will top the state and so forth regardless.

Very true! Didn’t think of that! Somehow I thought the ATAR was a nationwide thing :)
