Learning new words!

On a suggestion of miniturtles (Thank you!) I am starting a thread where I learn and teach a new word every week.
Some of the words may be very intelligent and I'm sorry about that but I'm much in need for a vocabulary boost!

The first word is;
Semantics
This is a branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning
eg. A student says to the teacher 'you told me to stop playing that game, I'm playing a different game now!' the student is playing semantics with the teacher.
(I think, correct me if i'm wrong)

No problem!

And yes,  your above example sentence uses "playing semantics" well.

Interested to hear further updates and happy to help you work on your linguistic acuity :)

The first word is;
Semantics

I just realised that I have actually learnt something in English Language and I don't know no metalanguage as I thought. haha
I immediately knew what semantics means. Probably the only word on this thread I will know though.

Looking forward to this thread btw.

Just because I can't wait until tomorrow... I've got a new word!

Descant (verb)
To talk at great lengths, often tediously.
eg. The scientist often descants about chemistry.

(BTW I actually find chemistry interesting! :) )

Like what I’m seeing, 3D Waffle!

You might like the word ‘amalgamate’ then, if you have yet to hear it.

I haven't heard that word yet! Thankyou ;D
That can be my word of the week!

Concatenate
Google says it means things linked together in a chain of events.

I still don't completely get it...is it something you use in programing?

if you concatenate "toad" and "stool" you get "toadstool"

Yes, this is used in programming to convert multiple strings into a single string

I think I'm just going to be posting new words at least once a week...

New word!;

Pragmatic
This word also deals with the meaning of words or phrases...but, as an adjective it means to deal with something practically and sensibly rather than based on theoretical reasoning.
eg. His approach to raising his chickens was highly pragmatic.

The first word for this week is;

Altruistic
This is the quality of being selfless.
e.g. The man acted in an altruistic way by helping the old lady cross the busy street.

Altruism has to have one of my favourite meanings, especially as it is one of my primary values.

To me, altruism is not only about moral and beneficial actions, but also deeply believing in trying to achieve the most good. Selflessness often guides altruism, but selflessness can also carry connotations of self-neglect that I don't connect with altruism so much.

TLDR; Altruism is such a wholesome word and I'm glad you've discovered it.
