Doing it write this week

(lol at pathetic pun)

My aim for this year is to write something significant every week - whether it be an essay, an article, or a story. If I want to be a writer, I need to organise in a more organised manner.

So I'll post links to anything published here and will use this to give myself an uppercut when I let the assignment's slip away from me!

Write some poetry too! I love hearing peoples poetry!  :)

Okay FAM I was NOT held accountable for anything last week because the lectures required all of my creativity/energy/all-the-caffeine-in-ultimo.

So I couldn't write anything last week to be published this week. However, some FUN AND AWESOME thing happened.

I'm just living my usual twitter life, retweeting the injustices of the world and occasionally making commentary on things. Then ****** (name of publication to be revealed later - but they are pretty big and serious, like a daily 90k viewers globally) reached into my DMs and was like, hey, we see you're really into some social issues and you write, would you like to contribute a piece for us? We'd love to have your thoughts on our site.

So naturally I'm like:

!! ! ! ! ! !!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

So we have emailed back and forth and I'm putting some ideas together now for drafts. I have previously written but not published an article about education in Syria with the impact of terrorism, but they require articles with a minimum of 1400 words and this sits at 1000. So I'd need to boost my word count and do some more research. But I'm also taking the opportunity to look at other story ideas too.

While this is all happening I've also pitched a new article to Junkee, and applied to be on the contributor list for Cover-More travel insurance's travel blog ahead of my travels to India!! and Nepal!! next month.

So I guess lots of "setting up" is happening right now but it feels good and I'll be able to get moving on these projects soon!

As a side thing - I've started a new job, two days a week for three months, at the Institute for Economics and Peace. I am their Digital Marketing Assistant, so I get to look at lots of their content and reports and find stories and messages to share. So that's really great because it helps me with story grabs and ideas for writing too.

Happy, but full, days :)

So last Friday I sent off an article to Impakter about education in Syria. They liked the pitch so hopefully they like the edited draft too!

I am writing! I am accountable!!

I actually learnt a lot in this process. I had to select 6 images to go with the story, and I hate seeing meaningful articles use irrelevant stock images. So as I was searching deep in the web for images from fantastic photojournalists, I realised how incredibly emotion-provoking a lot of these images area. Some of the images didn't even need a caption, it would be something like a classroom with old painted walls with the alphabet that is now covered in bullet holes.

I don't have what it takes to be a photographer, but I really really respect the storytelling ability of photojournalists. I had done hours and hours and hours of research for this story, and nothing made me feel quite as attached as the photos I found.

Ah, northern India, nice! Have only been to Delhi of those places, and that was in passing to elsewhere.  Mostly Kolkata :)

That sounds like a fascinating article!
