Timetables (Alloc8)

Does anyone have any idea about how the Melbourne Uni Alloc8 system works? The guy at enrollment day was a bit vague in explaining and I'm just wondering when we are meant to choose our tutorial times and if the lecture times are worked out automatically according to how all our classes fit in together. Does the system evaluate what times would best fit together then churn out a timetable? As you can probably tell I'm thoroughly confused and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, there are a set number of times when your lectures and tutes for your subjects run at, and you can choose within those specified times. However, it will notify whenever you have a clash, or if a lecture/tute is full. Also, for subjects where there is only one lecture stream, you wont be able to choose the times.

When can I access Alloc8?

Alloc8 access times for Semester 1, 2008 for all faculties except Education:

    * First semester timetables will open for viewing on Thursday 21 February 2008.
    * You may change your timetable online from Friday 22 February 2008.
    * First semester timetables can be changed until 3.30pm, Friday 14 March 2008. Timetables will be view only after this time.

just wondering, do people recommend doing a tute straight after the lecture; one day of mainly tutes and one day mainly lectures; when to do pracs, etc etc?

who can recommend me a method for picking my timetable...i really have no idea!

It doesn't matter. Tutorials start in the 2nd week, which means they are a week behind your lectures. This means that it doesn't matter whether you have your tutorial before or after lectures. I guess it would be good to have it near the start of the week, because that way you can revise on last week's stuff sooner (since the tutorial is behind a week, it will most likely cover last week's material).

Yes you can. To be safe, go on at about 11.50 pm on Thursday as it sometimes loads earlier. I should stress that it is very busy around this time as everyone is trying to go on to change their timetables, (well not everyone, but enough to make it extremely busy). However if you want to change classes it is also important to go on at this time as the popular classes fill up quickly (i.e the ones with good lecturers, late start times so you can sleep in).

Also, use a browser that tolerates slow servers. For some reason my Firefox kept timing out, so I used IE instead (which worked better).

o,shit my subjects was not approved, and it did not get confirmed. I just changed my subjects today again, how long do u think it can be available on alloc8?

I cant get on either. You wouldn't think there'd be that many people waiting to do their timetables at this time. Or is it just their retarted system that fucked up?

mine works perfectly, although it seems to have enrolled me in a fee paying course AND csp course.

How come when i move one of my calculus lectures, the rest of the other calculus lectures move along with it.
I just want to move i lecture to a different time not all 3

You have to follow the lecture stream. The reason for this is because different lecture streams may have a different lecturer teaching it - so there may be different paces of teaching between the two streams, for example.

This isn't true for all subjects, for example, Introductory Microeconomics, has the same lecturer, and a lecture from each stream is supposed to be identical, so in these cases, usually the lecture streams aren't bundled.

Of course, nothing stops you from taking whatever combination of lectures you wish. You don't have to follow your timetable. You can go to both, you can alternate, whatever, but you're ultimately responsible for your choices.
