MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSE (MOOC) REVIEWS

What are MOOCs?
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are free online courses that contain materials such as pre-filmed lectures, readings, quizzes and other tasks. Depending on what platform you're using, sometimes they allow you to interact with other students, lecturers, tutors and course convenors.

We encourage everyone to submit a review on any of the courses they have completed. Even if a review for that course already exists, we still would like you to submit the review. The more reviews, the better!

Scroll down for a review template!

Note: The views expressed in the reviews are the opinions of the author and do not represent the views of ATAR Notes or the platform of the courses. Keep in mind that while we aim to provide the most accurate information, the information may not be completely accurate.

Subject Name: Fundamentals of Digital Marketing

Platform: Google Digital Garage

Suggested Hours Per Week: 40 hours for overall completion

Price: Free!

Assumed Knowledge: N/A

Assessment: Each module has a quiz, so 26 modules altogether. There's a final exam with 40 questions, all multiple choice.

Notes/Materials Available: There are videos to go with the content.

Textbook: N/A

Lecturer(s): N/A. Videos are short animations with a voiceover.

Year of completion: 2019

Difficulty:1/5

Overall Rating: 4/5

Comments:
This was an easy but fun course. It's a good introduction to digital marketing since the videos are concise and the activities are fun. The course is a bit long but it's possible to do it all in one sitting (like me lol). It's also a free course that comes with a certificate, which is cool because a lot of courses require money to get a certificate.

Subject Name: MATLAB Onramp

Platform: MathWorks

Suggested Hours Per Week: Overall completion of 2.5 hours

Price: Free, but I was able to access MATLAB/MathWorks because of educational licence.

Assumed Knowledge: N/A

Assessment: No assessments, but you do a final project that combines everything you've learnt.

Notes/Materials Available: N/A

Textbook: N/A

Lecturer(s): N/A They give you step by step guide on how to use basic MATLAB commands.

Year of completion: 2019

Difficulty:2/5

Overall Rating: 4/5

Comments:
This was an interesting course to do because I've never used MATLAB before (there's a uni course teaching you MATLAB but I chose a different programming course lol). MATLAB is very useful in engineering so I'm glad I did this course because it makes basic things like generating graphs easier than Excel.

This was a little bit more difficult than MATLAB Onramp because it took a while for me to wrap my head around machine learning. It's still a fun course to do and they do a good job of guiding you through the process of writing code.

Just like the Machine Learning course, this one was a bit more difficult for me to wrap my head around, mainly because I'm still a noob with computer science, neural networks - all that stuff. But it was fun to go through the exercises and slowly figure out how deep learning works.

I've done report writing in uni before but this is a good refresher on how to write reports in engineering since it was never explicitly taught. The resources are also useful and I've saved them for future reference.

Subject Name: ABC of Flight Mechanics: How Do Planes Fly?

Platform: Future Learn

Suggested Hours Per Week: 4 hours per week

Price: You can do the course for free or pay $109 for a certificate.

Assumed Knowledge: It's good to know basic calculus and physics since they cover some derivations and lift/drag content.

Assessment: There's no final grade but there are some quizzes that you can retake.

Notes/Materials Available: They upload PDFs of the slides.

Textbook: N/A

Lecturer(s): Eric Poquillon

Year of completion: 2020

Difficulty: 3/5

Overall Rating: 4/5

Comments:
It's a good introduction to aerospace engineering, though it does focus more on the aviation. But it was interesting to learn, especially since I don't start specialising until 3rd year. I also think it's cool that ISAE SUPAERO made this course, which is a French uni completely dedicated to aerospace studies. I will say that the lecturer has a strong French accent (and there were some people in the course comments complaining about it) but the videos have subtitles so it's not as bad as they make it out to be.

It was cool to learn from a lecturer from ISAE SUPAERO, but it was difficult to understand the content completely.

Comments:
It was a short, interesting course on atmospheric chemistry. I really liked how they explained the different atmospheres in different planets and the technology they use to conduct space research. It is kinda unfortunate that in order for you to "fully complete" the course you need to pay, in contrast to other courses where you can complete the course without paying (unless you want a certificate).

Comments: I found this course a bit of fun to take whilst I had nothing much else to do! There were a few drier bits - mainly how the insect infects, but was overall, was a really interesting course, looking at all the different aspects of malaria.
