Why? It really depends on the course.. Which course? :)

I found La Trobe Bendigo open day today to be very good and very informative, all the students pointed me in the right direction and I talked with two of the lecturers I will most likely have for next year. I got plenty of information and as an added bonus some free food and a USB. So why is it shit?

I also like the fact that some of the classes being smaller helps students to be more interactive with each other and the lecturer, something that I hear is quite difficult in universities such as Monash.
‎"We divert our attention from disease and death as much as we can; and the slaughter-houses and indecencies without end on which our life is founded are huddled out of sight and never mentioned, so that the world we recognize officially in literature and in society is a poetic fiction far handsomer and cleaner and better than the world that really is."
- William James.

I wouldn't really say you have smaller lectures at La Trobe from what I know (maybe Bendigo). I think it's more about the intellectual atmosphere created by the type of students there. I work at La Trobe and think it has quite a nice campus and uni life, but regarding academics I'm not too sure. I have quite a few friends there and I get the feeling that it's not as organised as it should be and the lecturers aren't the best. I know some Psychology and Law students that are a bit more happy with things at La Trobe too though. I think you try and get the inside info from students in the course you're thinking about.

Nottingham?

But yeah, I don't think La Trobe would be that bad. It's obvious that people don't recognise La Trobe to be as good as Melbourne, Monash or Nottingham. The ATAR cut-offs are quite low for the subjects I looked at (50-60s), so they don't have much demand for their courses. It's possible that their courses might be absolutely rubbish - but I would imagine they would be decent (like at least they offer Physics unlike a couple of other unis).

This is going into more research stuff:
http://www.latrobe.edu.au/school/choose-la-trobe/best-in-australia - They seem to claim their research strength is in biology.
http://www.arc.gov.au/era/outcomes_2010/Institution/LTU - There is their ERA report. Their report isn't as great as Monash's or Melbourne's, but they have received some 5s, which a lot of Unis wouldn't have gotten.

Yes, it's very good by all accounts as I work with quite a few Physio students. One annoying thing about the course though is that you undertake a common first year with all the other Health Science students when really I think it would be more useful to shift to Physio-specific stuff. Not many people like the common first year.

Generally, I've heard pretty good feedback about it from people who went/go there, even from people who wanted to enrol in Melbourne or Monash courses. It depends a bit though on what you want to do at La Trobe and what your plans are once you have a degree.

la trobe is actually pretty good...and as mentioned above health sciences especially. But they do have other good things... they just aint popular due to location and its not as established as the other unis.

Like anything its what speciality you're in at the unviersity. Like, if you did journalism at RMIT, you'd be a boss wouldn't you? But RMIT overall seems lower than melbourne or monash.
