La Trobe Dentistry 2017 entry

It seems that the clearly-in ATAR for La Trobe Dentistry has fallen to 97.4 this year! It is usually in the mid to high 99s. Did they increase the quota or has something unusual happened?

There was probably a fall in demand for the course. It seems Melbourne Biomed also took quite a plunge dropping from 98.3 to 96.8. Does anyone know what the clearly in atar for Monash Biomed was this year?

97.4 is super low compared to previous years, never would have thought. Really weird...

This year they released 120 offers - the cohort is typically 40-50 students. Maybe they're looking to increase intake?

They usually release about 100 every year, expecting an acceptance rate of about 30%. There was an exception a few years ago where they offered 120 and they had to defer about 30 students as too many accepted. This year is very very surprising, dentistry in other universities doesn't seem to have a lower cut off this year, and this is the only undergraduate program in Vic.

Yes the number of places were increased (not sure why), hence the clearly in has decreased dramatically... And this is NOT unique to dentistry at la trobe, I've looked through a few other courses and la trobe bendigo phsyio has decreased to 93 and la trobe melbourne physio to 95 to name a few... Not sure whats going on with la trobe :o

Sorry I'm new so I'm not sure how to start a new topic...

Anyway I'm really interested in applying for La Trobe Dentistry for 2018. I'm pretty sure I qualify for SEAS (Disadvantaged financial background) as my parents are receiving Centrelink. La Trobe says on their website that you get up to 10 bonus aggregate points added to your ATAR, but I was wondering exactly how many points would I get.

Also, I am applying for the Aspire program, so would it be possible to have SEAS in conjunction with Aspire?

Thanks! ;D

Hey, Pinkydoo, welcome to the forums!

For future references, you can start a new topic by pressing the blue button above the forums. A photo for reference can be found here.

There's no way of knowing how much you'll get. The points you will receive will depend on the degree of disadvantage experienced. I don't think it is published how this is calculated. If you're unsure what SEAS categories you can apply for, speak to a coordinator or careers advisor at your school.

It's to my understanding that while you can apply for SEAS and the Aspire program, you cannot have them work in conjunction. I tried double-checking on their website, but the website seems to be having difficulties right now.

How likely will it be for the ATAR cutoff to go back to the 99's lol? Does anyone have any knowledge on what usually happens when a competitive course gets a lower ATAR cut-off?
Will there be a significant increase in applicants?  This discussion got 1000+ views so I'm guessing there will be a huge intake next year?

I reckon it will be very likely that the ATAR cut-off restores back into the mid 99s. I'm thinking this year was an exception due to an excess intake of students, being that the number of places were increased.

the intake wasn't actually that much tho a few of my friends are actually doing dent @ latrobe and say the cohort is probably roughly 60-70 students. Even though they were projecting 120-130. A lot of people probably declined the offer (also know a few people in my course who did) or deffered.

I'd think the cut-off should go up, probably because I feel a lot more people will be aiming for this course given the relatively low atar requried last year. Wouldn't be suprised if it was low 99s - however this is all speculation.

Just saw this thread, so this response might be useless.

Anyways, they do not work together.

If you get the Aspire program, the ATAR is 97 - it doesn't go down to 94 or whatever it is when you get a free 10 bonus points (this is when I was working it all out for applying in 2015).

That being said, definitely give Aspire a shot. I put down some absolute garbage fluff and got an offer, so if you have something decent you'll almost certainly get in.

Good luck.
