Title: Zhen's VCE Journey
Post by: zhen on August 23, 2017, 10:31:02 pm
Ok I'll start mine off with a short post, cause I really need to go to sleep, but I've noticed that I haven't posted in ages. Today I had a chemistry SAC and I went out of it feeling weird. In one of the NMR graphs, the formatting was dodgy, so I wasn't able to work out the splitting, but luckily the other information was enough. This year sadly I'm not content with how I've been going and I haven't been doing well. But, I realised that I'm ok with that, since I've learnt so many things in the process of failing and I've grown as a being because of it. Ok that's it for today, I'll try to update my journal later and I'll outline what's lead up to this point of the year.

What a great outlook to have! Props to you, zhen :)

Really glad to have you onboard with the journal, and I can't wait to read your updates and see how things pan out for the rest of the term and year! ;D

Really interesting first entry, man. Can't wait to hear your perspectives as we progress through the rest of the year. :)

Outline of the events that have lead to now
Term 1
Start of term 1 was really slow and I had lots of time to just get into the rhythm of year 12. In term 1 I was pretty motivated like we all are in VCE and decided to go to the library basically every second or so day. In term 1 I started to get to know my teachers and I was in for a massive surprise towards the middle of term 1. At this time of the year, I was aiming to get high enough scores to get into medicine, because if I could get into medicine, I could get into basically any course.

Term 2
Term 2 was really stressful because I had SAC week in the last couple of weeks and it was always looming in the background. What made term 2 really special to me was that I started really bonding with lots of different people. Throughout VCE I strengthened my bonds with most of my existing friends and made a ton of new friends. I became a bit less shy and socially awkward. I began talking with heaps of people and greeting people in the corridoor and just began to become a more social person. This also was the time period when I began to have an obsession with comedy shows.

SACS
I'm guessing everyone is wondering how I felt about my SACs especially after my initial post. Overall, SACs have not been going well. I'll just use these emoticons to show how I felt about my SAC results

Chemistry
SAC 1  :) (this was a massive surprise as I thought I completely bombed out, since I rushed through the last 3 pages)
SAC 2  :-\ (I wasn't able to finish it properly because of time pressure. I was pretty sad afterwards, because I tried really hard for it)

Mathematical Methods
SAC 1  :) (I thought completely bombed this SAC, but turns out I did well above average and I'm pretty happy with it)
SAC 2  :) (I did really well on this one too. I felt like my teacher really helped me out for this)

English
SAC 1  :-\ (I tried really hard for this SAC and didn't get as high as I would have hoped)
SAC 2  :) (This was a creative oral presentation and I was really happy with my mark cause I'm not good at those)
SAC 3  :( (I'm really not happy about this mark because I put in the effort but my hard work wasn't rewarded)
SAC 4  :( (Again I'm not happy with this mark because I tried hard and my effort wasn't rewarded. This was an oral presentation and I'm bad at those, so that might explain why)

Specialist Mathematics
SAC 1  :-\ (I got an ok mark, but I wasn't happy with it)
SAC 2  :( (This was really my fault, because I didn't try hard enough for this SAC and I slacked off and paid the price)
SAC 3  :( (After SAC 2, I tried hard for this SAC but really made heaps of errors)

Physics
SAC 1  :) (It wasn't a really high mark but I was content because I'm not good at physics)
SAC 2  :( (I paid the price of slacking off a bit for physics)

As you can see, I'm not really happy with my current marks.

Challenges in VCE
This is the part where I rant about all the misfortunes I've had in VCE, so you can ignore this. I think the biggest challenge for me is overcoming the challenge posed by my teachers. This might be a bit controversial, since there are some teachers and educators in the forums so just a warning. I'll start with my biggest challenge, which is my English teacher. (enter rant mode) My English teacher constantly leaves class unannounced, without supervision, and has been spotted smoking cigarettes during class time (he typically leaves class about every couple of lessons for about 20 minutes but maybe longer). He outright refuses to answer questions and instead just says to read deeper into the book or for me to find it myself. He spends less than half of class time teaching and instead spends most of the time sitting in the front of the class staring at his laptop. He's also ridiculed and in my opinion bullied numerous students. He labels some students as babies mockingly and ridicules students that he deems as unintelligent or if someone says something that opposes his point of view. He's not open to criticism and views anything that opposes his views as incorrect. On top of this, he's an extremely harsh marker. My class generally averages a C or C+, whilst other classes average B or B+. I'll admit he's extremely knowledgable and intelligent, but he refuses to impart his knowledge upon his students. My teachers for specialist and physics are nice and knowlegdable people, but they overcomplicate things, mark really harshly and waste a lot of time going well beyond the course without first consolidating the fundamentals. My chemistry teacher is also a nice person but teaches way too fast and personally I don't like it when teachers teach off power points. He's been away for more than 4 weeks over the course of the year so far, which might be why he teaches fast, since he likes to be well ahead of the other classes whilst being away a lot. However, while I've been ranting on about my bad teachers, I have to acknowledge that my mathematical methods teacher is absolutely amazing. He teaches really well and makes the hardest things seem simple. He explains the reasoning behind everything without overcomplicating it. He's also really knowledgable and overall an amazing person. I feel like he's really helped me heaps for methods.

I nearly forgot, even though I complain about these challenges, I feel like I've learnt many things from this, like overcoming adversity and persevering through difficult circumstances.

Edit: I'll probably make shorter posts next time, since I really covered heaps of stuff in this post. Also forgot to mention what happened today.

24/9/2017
Had a SAC today which went really badly, but since everyone did badly, not all hope is lost. I also had a chemistry test today (not a SAC) which was pretty tiring because of the SAC yesterday. I also learnt how to swim over the past term (people who can't swim have to take swimming lessons) and I can finally swim a little bit without a kickboard or a lifejacket.

Omg kudos to you! That's great! Reminds me a bit about me, how last year I couldn't even make it to half the 25m pool without choking on water. Fast-forward, just swam today (roughly 2hrs ago) 3.5 km freestyle, so haha there's that! Keep at it!! You'll give yourself abs in the process and it's totally worth it because my breathing has become super relaxed and controlled since I started swimming hahaha Amazing what exercise can do tbh

Yea, I feel like the extra exercise makes me feel healthier and fitter. It's pretty amazing that you went from being unable to swim 25m to swimming 3.5km.  ;D

This is the best thing I've ever seen.

Thanks for the positive comment.  :)

25/9/2017
Ok I'll start talking about today. Today nothing really happened other than me receiving the chemistry test I did yesterday, which I feel neither happy or sad about, since it was a decent score but nothing exceptional. Throughout the day I felt tired, so I think I need to sleep earlier. I feel like the main highlight of today was methods, which was a really chill lesson. The main thing that annoyed me today was that my teacher for physics spent basically a whole period doing specialist maths and derivatives to prove something that we don't need to prove as VCE physics students. Nearly the whole period was him just doing algebra to derive a formula rather than helping us understand it. In my opinion that was a waste of a lesson, which really annoyed me. After school I went to the library and crammed out a decent chunk of work, so that was pretty good. Overall it was a normal day without anything really special happening. I should probably do a bit of study before I go to sleep.

So you're looking forward to reading me repeat the exact same things that I whine about everyday on the train home.

Not much happened today. I did a decent chunk of specialist maths and went for a morning jog. But other than that, very little happened. It was quite an ordinary and uneventful day.

hey zhen, i plan to choose the exact same subjects as you (except jap sl instead of chinese). any tips or certain challenges on the actual subjects and content as a whole so far?

Well personally I feel like one of the challenges of taking these subjects is the massive workload. Of course there are going to be some tricky topics in every subject like for chemistry lots of people don't like electrolytic cells. The problem with doing these competitive subjects especially specialist maths I feel is that students really need to know their subjects really well to do well, because most people that do specialist maths are good at maths. Also, note that languages generally has a massive workload. My biggest tip right now is to find your optimal way of studying or organising your time (trying out stuff like timetables, checklists, going to the library). In my opinion, lots of year 12 students struggle because of bad time management and I feel like if you have good study habits really early, you'll be way ahead of most year 12 students, since many year 12 students right now, including me, still waste time procrastinating.

As someone who smashed my methods sacs last year and messed up the majority of spesh sacs this year, hopefully we both will still end up with great scores in spesh. Its a great relief to know I'm not alone.

The exams are still on their way and VCAA can still moderate our scores up!

I know it's been a while, but do you have any reflections on Chinese SL? ie: How did you feel during the oral exam?

I'm really relying on my exam to lift up my specialist SACs. Hopefully we both ace those exams so that they can carry our study scores.

All I can say about the oral exam is to keep calm. Getting flustered is the worse thing you can do because then it makes it really easy for you to misunderstand the examiner's questions or stuff up your responses. I don't really have much else to say about Chinese other than try your hardest, since Chinese is a subject where you really need to do heaps of work

Today, I went to English tutoring and that was pretty standard. I also did an ok amount of specialist work and methods work today after tutoring. I also found out that a group of students from my school are continuing to stalk my atarnotes account, which is pretty creepy. Other than that, I had a discussion with one of my friends about how high school has gone by so fast and how the bonds I've formed with many of my fellow classmates will probably break as I progress through the rest of my life, which is pretty sad.

This was something I really struggled with during year 12, particularly towards the end of it.

But I guess the thing is, often, it's just the natural progression of things. It's such a cliché, but once you finish year 12, and start uni, you'll realise that there were a lot of people who you were only friends with because you saw them 5 times a week and had to talk to them. But yeah, it can be a hard thing to accept (I still struggle with it at times lol) for sure, that your life is moving on to a different stage, and that your relationships will change as you go along.

If you want to stay in contact with people, it will be worth the effort to stay in contact with them. And spend every moment you have left in year 12 treasuring your friendships and making memories :)

Yeah thankfully Specialist SACs are only 33% as opposed to 40-50% like most other subjects. I have heard plenty of stories of people smashing their Methods/Spesh SACs such as my brother (amongst the top of Melb High class) but screwing up the exam and getting a study score way lower than what they should. So in the end it depends on the exam and hopefully we blitz. I sorted a couple problems that have hindered my sac performance in the past, so hopefully we are put in a position to ace it. SACs and exams definitely play out differently for different people.

About the ATARNotes account, do they know who you are IRL, or are they trying to find out ;) ?

One guy apparently spent 3 hours trying to find out who I was. They even asked me to join the search team at the time. I think they just asked me on a whim later and I revealed my identity. Ever since they've been stalking my posts and one of them has posted in this very thread.

I had double English today which is never a pleasant experience. Other than that I had a late start which was good. I also went to the library today and got a decent amount of study done. When I arrived home, I also got quite a bit of study done at home. But, I'm feeling a bit tired after today, but it's been a productive day.

Today I had 2 periods of cancelled classes and 1 free period, so it was really chill overall. The double specialist maths at the end of the day was a bit intense, but overall an ok day. After school I went to the library again and did a bit of study. I also did a decent amount of study at home afterwards. Over the past few days I've done a bit more study compared to normal to really try and do well for the rest of my SACs and the exams that are fast approaching.

Today I finished school at recess, since I had a free period for period 4 and a cancelled class period 5 (we finish at lunchtime on Wednesday, unless there's a SAC). So, that was really nice. Today was pretty relaxing (maybe a bit too relaxing). I did a decent amount of English work, but I feel like I should have done a bit more, since I had heaps of time on my hands today. A bit disappointed with myself, but hopefully I can do heaps of work tomorrow, as I have a day off due to parent teacher interviews, which I don't go to anymore.

I have a decent amount of relaxation time everyday, especially at school where I can hang out with my friends. It's when I'm in the library or at home that study quite a bit, but I make sure I take frequent breaks. I realise that my atar isn't worth destroying my health and that I should cherish these last few moments of high school. Thanks for the advice.  :)

I spent half of the day reviewing and analysing Stasiland and the other half of the day really just relaxing. I've found so many new ideas and feel like I've analysed Stasiland to a much greater degree on my reread. Hopefully, after I finally finish reviewing Stasiland thoroughly, I can really start doing English exam revision and start writing practice essays. I realised that I wrote the number for the month wrong for all my posts. I guess I can't count to 8  :P. For future viewers, the posts prior to this were done in August, not September. I'll leave the mistake so I can laugh about it later.

Today most of my classes either had very little learning involved or were cancelled, so school was really relaxed. But, after school I did quite a bit of work and finished analysing Stasiland properly. Now I'll try to relate Stasiland to 1984, which I've also finished analysing. I plan on making a quote bank and writing up a couple of comparative paragraphs on key themes tomorrow.

Sorry for the late reply. I normally reply to posts at night, but I had my formal at night. I think my chemistry teacher was away due to extracurricular activities for the school (not sure what exactly), but I'm not sure why the other teacher was away.

2/9/2017
Earlier I said here that I wouldn't go to formal, but one of my friends convinced me to go. So, I'll talk about the formal. Overall the formal was ok. The food was pretty good but not as amazing as I was expecting for such a steep price and for such a fancy venue. Like I thought, it was really awkward for me to introduce myself to complete strangers and I felt that I really didn't fit in with that type of atmosphere, but I spent most of the night taking photos and chatting with all the friends I've made across the year, so that was pretty good. I had heaps of photos taken and had quite a bit of fun. I think that overall it was worthwhile, because I could bond with my friends, but I think that the price was way too steep ($130) and what really made it a special day was more the people there than the venue or the food.

This was probably the least productive of my days in the last week, since I felt really tired after the formal. Anyway, I had English tutoring today and I learnt that I am not able to write a proper comparative under time conditions. Writing a timed comparative essay the day after formal and after not being able to sleep for much was not fun. After tutoring, I did a bit of methods and not much other study. Hopefully after a proper night of sleep I'll be motivated to do more study.

The big thing that happened today was that I got my UMAT results. They were awful, but I guess I'm ok with that now since the reasons why I wanted to try out medicine were pretty shallow (high job rates and wage) and honestly I don't think I have much of a passion for medicine. I was kind of hoping that I might find that passion if I tried it out, but now that I know that it's impossible to get into undergraduate medicine, I feel like I should give up on this. Right now, I think my main interest is commerce, since I enjoy mathematics to a degree. To the people that do commerce currently, is it maths heavy and do you think that it's enjoyable as a course? Other than that the main thing today was that I had 3 periods of no classes, where I spent time helping people study for the methods SAC tomorrow.

Well it's alright zhen that happens sometimes :) if you're interested in commerce that is fantastic! Having an interest in mathematics is a really important quality to have to study commerce imo, for all the mathematical concepts you might learn, good luck in your future endeavours! I might get into the same course too, and we might meet from there. :)

Had my methods SAC today which was absolutely awful. But, since most people didn't think they did well, hopefully it'll be like the first SAC when I fluked a decent score, despite feeling really bad coming out of it. Pretty hyped right now since that was my last methods SAC and only a few SACs are left.  :)

Not yet, I have one last chemistry SAC next term, but my teacher has basically finished the course cause he raced through it at a crazy pace meaning that I barely understood what he was teaching half the time.

7/9/2017
I did quite a bit of study on this day, but not much happened other than this really boring speech about 1984 which we had to listen to that outlined background information about the novel.

8/9/2017
I slacked off a lot today and didn't really study much after school. Today I had cross country running but I just walked it with two friends. I had an amazing time today and probably laughed more in one day than I laughed for the last week. It was really amazing just hanging out with friends and enjoying these last few moments of year 12. It was also great that the teachers didn't care that we were 10 minutes late to start and basically joked around with us, since they knew that it's our last year and just let us do whatever we wanted.

I went for a morning jog and did a decent amount of specialist revision for my upcoming SAC. I was feeling good for most of the day but at around 8:00 pm at night I started feeling really sick. I had a fever, a massive headache and a sore throat so I slept pretty early.

10/9/2017
I woke up feeling really bad, but about 3 hours after waking up, I felt a lot better. Went to English tutoring, which was pretty standard. Afterwards, I did quite a bit of specialist revision. I feel like I've been doing heaps of SAC revision, but I haven't been preping for the exams as much as I should have. So, I'm going to try to start prepping hard for my practice exams which are next week.

Be careful not to overdo it zhen, pushing yourself to burnout. Is a really, really bad thing to do now.

Trust me on this, I've gone and done, the week before my exams

I'll be careful of not overdoing it. I've been making sure that I take plenty of breaks and I've also started to run once a week to really reduce stress. It's not like I'm studying 5 hours straight without breaks. I always try to take mini breaks during my study sessions so I feel refreshed and large breaks in between study sessions. If I feel like I'm overdoing it and if I feel like I'm starting to lose motivation, I'll slow down for a day or two. Anyway, thanks for the advice.  :)

I was really unhappy with my English and physics lessons today. For physics we spent time proving things that would never need to be proven in the course. I'm really annoyed that we're wasting time doing this when we only have 4 periods left until practice exams and we haven't finished the content yet. For English, it was just my teacher doing what he usually does, which is being biased and not accepting other people's opinions. He also yelled at people who opposed his view rather than engaging in a civilised discussion with them. I can't wait to finally finish English so I won't have to deal with my teacher ever again. He's made a subject that I mildly enjoyed to a subject that I absolutely hate. On the bright side, my specialist lesson was pretty good and I had a late start today. After school I did English and revised the stuff that I hadn't touched for ages in preparation for the English practice exam. I didn't do as much work as I've done over the last couple of days, but hopefully I can ramp it up tomorrow, especially since I'm feeling a lot better right now and my sickness has disappeared.

That isn't too great about your English teacher, all i can say is they can't help putting their biases in their teaching. Which is hard to do, but when you reject other's opinions and treating yours as gospel then it becomes in your case hard to develop better ideas. It sucks that you hate English now because of this teacher (I feel like English skills in general have worsen over generations like reading..). I don't know if your school allows for this, but try going to another English teachers for feedback, I know in my school the English faculty allowed for this and I later on just hip-hopped and skipped around all my teachers getting different viewpoints and feedback.

Anyway, I wish all the best for your upcoming practice exams for English and other subjects.

This is actually super super relateable its not even funny. Despite my UMAT can be something what you'll call "awful", I researched that I could have done Medicine in Queensland but during this time I realised what being a doctor entails and now I definitely don't want to do it. I'm only unhappy about the time I spent "practicing" for it. Like you, I'm planning on doing Commerce at Melbourne or Monash. (will go to Melbourne unless I get a good scholarship at Monash). I feel like a lot of people want to do Medicine without weighing all the negatives. Since we are strong at Maths, I have no doubt we would excel  (if we want to!) at Commerce.

Well I have an English tutor to correct my essays, since my teacher is notorious for being terrible. I also share ideas with other students so I can hear many different opinions. So, I think I'm not too disadvantaged with my teacher.

I feel like the really hands on job that medicine entails isn't really my thing given how uncoordinated I am. Also, I feel like the commitments and my general lack of passion towards the job means that I wouldn't find it enjoyable. Hopefully I enjoy commerce since it seems like a field with a decent amount of math, which I hopefully enjoy.

12/9/2017
Today I screwed up my SAC practical component for chemistry, which hopefully doesn't matter too much since I've heard that another class did worse and this is just getting the data. I also went to the library after school and did some chemistry and specialist revision. When I got home, I relaxed and started discussing English to really get some ideas flowing through my mind. I really need to continue studying for my chemistry test tomorrow that I'm definitely not prepared for since I've spent the last 30 minutes procrastinating.

Ouch on the SAC. Remember: SACs = stepping stones to your exam. You'll be allg.

idk how much research you've done re comm - prob a lot cos you sound like waaay more prepared and informed than I ever was - but we have core units and electives. How much math you do as part of your comm degree depends on what you decide to major in, electives and all that jazz - btw dw if you don't know straight away my best friend is doing straight comm, is in her first year and tells me she's thinking of doing a different major almost every other week lmao. But everyone does core units and esp things like marketing, management and commercial law have like no math at all (as I type this, I'm avoiding a 1500 word marketing essay lmao) and tbh across most of the other core units, it's pretty rudimentary math. So be warned that if you do follow comm, straight comm especially, you might not be doing much math in your first semester at least.

Legit google "Bachelor of Commerce" course progression map and unit outlines (EDIT: plus the name of whatever university you're considering obv cos comm might be run slightly differently across different unis) - you should be able to locate everyth online I think if you wanna know more about how comm is run.

Also: might be different across unis idk. This is just my understanding of comm life from a Monash perspective. :)

Actually that part of the SAC was really just getting the information and raw data needed for the actual test component, which is where all the marks are at. So, it's not the end of the world for me. Also, I've looked at the commerce course for Melbourne University for a bit. But, after reading what you wrote, I think that I should probably really start looking at the course and choosing what electives I should take and maybe even what major I should do. Anyway, thanks for the advice.  :)

Had an awful chemistry test today, which I was not prepared well enough for. I did heaps of specialist revision today since my methods teacher wasn't there and my specialist teacher gave a study period. My physics teacher started going beyond the course again, but this time he allowed people to study on their own if they wanted, which I really liked. Also, after school I helped someone out in specialist maths, even though I'm probably not fit to really help people out given my awful SAC scores. After school I chilled out a lot and did a bit more specialist maths revision for my SAC tomorrow.

I don't personally do any work, but I know people who work a lot (as much as a full time worker) and people who do lots of extracurricular activities. I feel like you definitely can work, but you have to make sure you don't take on too many extracurricular activities or work too many hours of work. Of course there are always people who do heaps of extracurricular activities and still ace their studies and you may be one of them, but I've seen some really intelligent people struggle because of their extreme load of extracurricular activities. Also, you'll really need to manage your time effectively.

I did my specialist SAC today. I feel like I did badly for the tech free component and ok for the tech active component. I also got back the chem test that I felt I wasn't prepared for and was pretty surprised that I got an ok mark. Also, after school I spent ages writing an essay that ended up being really mediocre. Today overall has been a pretty rough and rocky day, but I'm glad that my last SAC's over for specialist maths.

I did heaps of work after school on this day. I did 2 methods exam 1 and attempted an English practice essay which I didn't end up finishing but got some nice ideas in the process. Also my sickness from earlier started to creep up on me and I didn't feel so good late in the day.

16/9/2017
I had a massive discussion with a friend about ideas for English which was really helpful. I also did quite a bit of work for English and composed a miniature quote bank and attempted analysing those quotes. On this day I didn't run, even though on Saturdays I usually run, as I was still feeling a bit sick. But, I feel a lot better than the day before.

Today I did my specialist practice exam which was ok I guess. I know I made quite a few mistakes, but hopefully after more practice I can fix up my stupid mistakes and conceptual errors. After the exam it was one of those days where I just absolutely refused to do any study and now I'm feeling guilty. I crammed in a bit of specialist and chemistry for tomorrow's practice exams, but other than that I didn't do much. I really need to pick up the slack from today and study hard tomorrow. Hopefully I'm not too tired after the 2 practice exams tomorrow, since I really want and need to be productive tomorrow.

Today I received a physics SAC mark which was below average and probably the worst SAC of the entire year. I feel like I'm not learning anything in 4/5 of my classes for most of the year. Right now I'm not satisfied with my scores and I feel like I'm learning more independently than than I ever learn at school. Majority of what I know is from self study. So, I'm wondering whether it's even worth attending classes next term. I'm really not satisfied with my teachers this year and if you read my second post, it really outlines how I feel. Some teachers just refuse to teach the course (one teacher just refuses to teach and says "if you're good than you're good", implying that those who aren't naturally talented should just give up and the other is busy wasting periods on stuff which is well outside the scope of the course without first consolidating the basics). One other teacher at least tries really hard to teach the necessary things but just teaches too fast for majority if not all of my class to understand. Yes, I have one amazing teacher which I can actually walk into class not knowing anything beforehand and understand, but shouldn't this be the norm? I don't think I should be expected to do nearly all of my learning outside of class. I'm really unsatisfied with my teachers which in my opinion has made what has been an otherwise great year a massive grind to get through. So any advice for me? Should I start skipping classes or should I sit and endure (I can't self study in their classes as they don't allow electronic devices to be opened and most of the time just force their students to listen)?

Thanks for making me appreciate my teachers more!  :P.
I definitely agree that you shouldn't be expected to do the majority of your learning outside of class. However, I think that the term four classes can be important as this is generally where the teachers tend to give some helpful hints for the exams and go over the course, helping you realise if you need to focus more on a topic that they are stressing. Also I think that in the final weeks of school many of my classes are just giving practice questions/timed questions, so even if the teachers are inept it doesn't really matter. This might be the same for you?
I suppose that if the classes you go to next term don't prove beneficial you could always stop going (as long as your attendance is good enough).

I think I'll take on this piece of advice. My attendance will still be over 80% even if I literally ditch all my classes in the last 2 weeks of school. I feel like this year has made me appreciate my teachers from previous years and has made me respect amazing teachers so much more. Anyway, thanks for the advice.  :)

Just want to note to double-check that school sets a minimum attendance at 80%+ to do your exams at your school. As if you fall below it, after classes are over, you may have some trouble finding another school to do your exams.
But if your sure it is 80%, then by all means skip classes and if your allowed to join other classes. I did this for my free periods for subjects, I was struggling in. One of the better things I did for VCE.

My school announced that students have to have an over 80% attendance to complete a VCE subject, which I’m a bit skeptical about since I know people under this and I don’t think my school will force students to stay back a year. Anyway, I meet this requirement since for all of my subjects I have an attendance of 97%+ meaning that even if I skip most of my classes next term I’ll still be over 80% in attendance.

Sadly I won’t be able to attend the meetup on Friday.  :'(

Hey Zhen, just curious, what company papers do u think are good for chemistry?
Personally from experience I generally like NEAP and Lisachem company papers. But I feel like we can’t be too picky about trial exams cause there are so few as it’s a new study design. I’m planning on doing all the new study design trial exams I can get my hands on and then I’ll go through the VCAA ones and maybe a couple of old company trial exams. I guess prioritise VCAA exams since they’ll be a really good indicator for the types of questions in the real exam and trial exams that correspond to the new study design, cause then the questions are 100% relevant rather than having 30% of the questions being irrelevant.

Holidays so far
I did a lot of work during Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but I slacked off a bit today. I still did some work, but honestly not enough if I want to really start hammering out trial exams and if I want to really ace the upcoming exams. I’m aiming to really knock out heaps of work tomorrow to make up for the less productive day today.

Angst is definitely an understatement, especially after some of the stuff I’ve said this year and some of the interesting comments I left during my English practice exam.

Exams are fast approaching which is pretty scary. I did a lot of studying today which I’m satisfied with, but my practice exams scores so far are less than satisfactory. Hopefully I can keep up the pace I’m going at and really improve heaps before the exam.

Edit: One of my friends wanted me to give a massive shoutout to my school’s biology departmenr for having 3 SACs left in term 4 and essentially screwing over everyone doing biology. I don’t know why the guy wanted me to post this.

Over the past two days I did a decent chunk of work. But, I feel like I need to ramp it up. Even though I’ve put in loads of hours, I feel like I haven’t done much because I spent quite a bit of the time correcting my work and being really thorough about it, so that I learn from my mistakes. Hopefully that ends up helping. I also feel like I should shift from doing practice questions to doing more practice exams now, since I’ve been doing lots of questions for some subjects without doing many timed practice exams.

Well my first exam 2 for maths was awful, but the one I did today for methods was surprisingly good considering that I haven’t done that much yet. Probably because the sample exam they provided for the new study design is easier than usual. (This is the one I did today) Hopefully we both start acing our trial exams so that all we have to work on are touching up and working on the harder questions.

 30/9/2017
Today I did a lot of study, but quite a bit of it was helping different people out. I think I spent like over 3 hours helping people out which really consolidated my understanding. I also did a lot of methods and English. I did that methods exam which I mentioned above and did plans for essays and went through my old essays to really get back into everything. Hopefully I can do decently on the timed practice exam tomorrow for tutoring.

I had a relaxation day yesterday, which was good. I think my lack of sleep after daylight savings and the timed English exam I did contributed to me feeling pretty burnt out yesterday and I just wasn’t able to study. But, I picked up the pace today and did heaps of study. I’ve noticed that all of my practice exam scores have shot up drastically, which is great.  :) I’ve noticed that even though I might come off negatively (especially when talking about my teachers and the stresses of VCE) since this journal is my way of venting out, I think these last few months are one of the happiest periods of my life. I noticed that in the last couple of years I’ve either been looking back nostalgically at the past or too caught up in the moment that I’ve lost track of everything. But, these couple of months I’ve been cherishing every moment left and living the present at my own pace. I’ve learnt to take a step back and really appreciate life. It’s really sad that this stage of my life is slowly coming to an end.  :'( But, hopefully the next stage of life is even better and hopefully I can make even more amazing memories.  ;D

This is really great to read Zhen! I feel like the end of highschool is a bittersweet moment and I feel like it's so important that during the hussel and bussel of year 12 that times where you just step back and relax can prove to be the most beneficial in the long run! All the best for exams bro!

Not enough in my opinion. Like 3 or 4 per subject, but you shouldn’t take me as a guide since I began to slack off on my second week of holidays and focus more on English cause of the upcoming SAC and cause it’s the first exam. Do as many exams as you can and make sure you correct them properly and list out all your mistakes. Correction process is in my opinion just as important as doing the exam, so make sure you correct your exams properly cause some students do heaps of exams but don’t learn from them because they don’t correct their exams properly. Aiming to have 15 or so exams finished for each subject by exam time. Going to cram across the time until the exams and maybe ditch a few classes to do so.  :P

Holidays were ok in terms of productivity. I did heaps of essays for my standards but didn’t do as much chemistry and specialist practice exams as I would have liked.

9/10/2017
The day was pretty ordinary and I studied heaps after school. The biggest thing that happened was my double English class. Basically the teacher spent 10 minutes going through a one page word document summarising what he expected from our essays. After it, I asked him to correct my essay and he’s like I went through this document so that you could do it yourself. If he expects us to do everything ourselves with a tiny one page, then why do we even have a class? It’s the equivalent of giving us a sheet and saying class dismissed. He spent the whole double period either at the front doing nothing or walking around doing nothing (refused to answer questions). He also said to write some practice paragraphs, but basically said that he wouldn’t correct them cause we needed to wait until we get our practice exams back to know what to improve on. The practice exams are marked by an external marker and we’ll receive them next week, so he’s basically telling us that he’ll do absolutely nothing for the next week. Also, I highly doubt he’d give any feedback for essays after the trial exams are handed out considering his reluctance to do so throughout the year. He’s literally only marked 3 essays of mine other than SACs. Whenever I ask him to mark one, he either outright refuses to or scans for a tiny spelling or grammatical error so that he can tell me to rewrite it again cause he says that I clearly haven’t paid enough attention and I need to prefect my essays before handing them to him. If I could write perfect essays, then I wouldn’t even need to be taught in the first place. I feel like his desire to not teach has really disadvantaged his class. That in addition to his incredibly harsh and at times biased marking makes it so that his classes are unbearable. I feel like he’s really screwed over my class and considering that I know absolutely no one in my entire class that has gotten A or above for all their SACs, it really shows how nearly everyone in my class has just been unfairly treated.

Wow. Your English teacher is either a) retiring soon,  b) lost the passion to teach, c) hates your class or d) some other reason for being this bad.

I actually don't get this passive aggressiveness from your teacher. I highly recommend you document if you can what he has done and get other students in the class to back you up & got to your year level co-ordinator to report this behaviour.
What he is doing is inappropriate and unprofessional as well. I know this won't change anything for you and your class most likely, but hopefully it will stop him teaching Year 12 next year.
As for getting feedback, try going to other English teachers for feedback if possible on your practice work or here on ATARNotes.

All the best though zhen. You have sympathy for your predicament.

teachers are always good (well hard working) for the first 6 months - 2 years when their future is uncertain but when it's not heaps drop off heavily .

Everyone suspects that some of the notorious teachers at my school have contracts which is why they can get away with it in spite of the fact that even other teachers joke about how bad they are. I think my English teacher has just lost his desire to teach and does not want to cope with the workload of properly teaching and marking essays.

Had my last SAC today!!  ;D I think I did a decent amount of study for it so hopefully it was ok. Also over the holidays until now, I’ve done quite a bit of English. I feel decently ready for comparative and argument analysis but not ready enough for text response. From now until the exam I will cram Medea hard. I also need to do more specialist and chemistry exams. Methods is going ok but I need to really limit those stupid mistakes. I plan on studying hard from now until the last exam and hopefully I’ll get an atar high enough to either tutor certain subjects or get a scholarship. Anyway, good luck to everyone studying for exams! :)

It’s nearly time for our final exams. I’m pretty content with the amount of work I’ve done for English, but hopefully I can squeeze in like 5 more essays before the exam. I don’t really feel prepared for English but I don’t know if I’ll ever feel prepared for English. I’ll just try to do my best and not panic. I’m praying that I get topics I’ve done before and that the argument analysis piece is something that I like. I really need to start studying hard for my other subjects after English finishes. This year has been pretty good considering all the unique challenges I’ve faced. (You can read about them throughout my journal) Over the last month I’ve been stressing out about whether I can get a 99, but recently during the time that I’ve tried the hardest I’m thinking that it doesn’t matter what score I get. What matters is the process and the challenges I’ve faced in VCE. I’d love to get a 99 atar, but I think it shouldn’t be the end of the world if I don’t. Anyway, good luck to everyone!!!  ;D

Wow that’s a very positive attitude, I’m impressed. It will hold you in good stead for all you exams. It’s only really now that I’ve realised succumbing to fear of failure will only hold you back from achieving success. There’s no guarantees in VCE, just like there’s no guarantees in life, and if you spend all your time searching for some proof that your work will be validated, you just won’t end up doing anything. Good luck for English!

Ended up doing like 3 or 4 more, so it was an optimistic goal.

I’ve realised that for life trying hard doesn’t guarantee success because people get unlucky and sometimes things just don’t work out. I think instead of focussing on the end result, we should focus more on the process. If we try hard we’re increasing the chances of success. Even if things don’t turn out great, if we try our best, then that’s all we can do and we should be satisfied with it.

Just want to say, zhen: it's been a pleasure reading your updates.

Personally if I didn’t write them myself, I wouldn’t be able to stand the general saltiness and ranting.  :P

One subject down and four more to go. Overall, English was ok I think. There was the comparative which was pretty hard and not that good. The argument analysis was ok and the Medea was actually really nice. I think overall I’m satisfied with how hard I tried for English and now all I can do is practice for my other subjects and wait. This is a bit unrelated to the forums, but I want to give a massive shoutout to HopefulLawStudent, who is the English tutor at the Mulgrave tutesmart centre. She’s helped me out an enormous amount and really made me improve my English when I basically had no teacher. Another shoutout to Eric11267 (specialist nerd) for being my English buddy for the latter half of the year and more importantly for the KFC today. Anyway, I’m hoping to try really hard for my remaining subjects and hopefully ace the rest of the exams. Good luck to everyone for the rest of their exams.  ;D

The pleasure was all mine zhen. Thanks for dealing with my incessant annoyance throughout the whole year and carrying my English study score. Even though I didn't feel great about the english exam today, without your help I probably would have done even worse. Good luck for your upcoming exams! Today, I had one of my mini breakdowns. In 13 more days, I will finish my last exam which is physics. Today, I’ve just been thinking about the all the different people who have been helping and supporting me throughout VCE and that after this year there are going to be lots of people that I won’t be able to keep in contact with.  :'(  I’m feeling pretty depressed that it’s ending so quickly and I wish that I could go back and make a couple more fond memories.

That last sentence is how I felt overall about my whole highschool student life. I would not let that get to you personally. Why? Because your young and you have times to make fond memories. You always can make treasured memories.
Yes VCE is a special place for everyone who does it, but so are other things like university, your first job, your first kiss, your first crush, etc. I wouldn't dwell on the mistakes and regret of not making memorable memories. I would advise you go and make new ones because you always can. It just starts with you.

I think a lot of people go through this when they're sitting their final exams! I went through at least a solid term, if not more, of being super sad about high school ending last year haha.
If you want to keep in contact with people though, it's really worth the effort. You might not be able to see each other that often, but it doesn't have to break your bond.
And seriously, some people you'll find you were only friends with because you saw each other 5 days a week. It's really interesting to see how friendship group dynamics change with the transition into uni and other endeavours.

It's said that year 12 is ending, but there are so many exciting times ahead of you :D You'll always have the memories to look back on, and in these last 2 weeks, you can try to make as many memories as possible! High school really is just the end of the beginning. :)

I also hope that I can keep in contact with as many friends as possible. I guess I’m just worried that I won’t be able to keep in contact with some people, especially those planning on studying overseas or interstate. Hopefully, as time passes, I’ll stop worrying about the past that cannot be changed and look toward the future.

What you're feeling at the moment is perfectly normal tbh I think it hit for me at around this time last year too.

But here's the thing that only really clicked for me earlier this year: the end of Year 12 doesn't have to mean the end of friendships and losing contact. Like don't get me wrong, it's not as easy as high school where you rocked up to school every day and people were just there but I've found that even a little bit of effort goes a long way.

Also re keeping in contact: Facebook also helps (like don’t get me wrong, it’s no substitute but better than nothing when it comes to friends who go interstate or overseas). Legit went on an adding spree post high school and added all the friends I didn’t already have added on Facebook and funnily enough my teachers found me on Facebook and added me and everyone else in my year level (yay to having a super small and tight-knit cohort) but ngl it's been so interesting finding out that my teachers are actually people and have lives outside of school.  :o ;D ;D

Like seriously if there's any classmates or anyth that you don't want to lose contact with, make sure you've got them on facebook (or whatever you cool kids are using these days) cos technology is amazing for keeping in contact.**

**unless you're trying to use it to do a group project at uni where magically people sometimes start seeing messages but forgetting to reply cos “technology sucks” lmao

I’ll probably also go on an adding spree over the next month, so that I can keep in contact with everyone. I’ll also see if my teachers are on facebook, since it’ll be interesting to see their personal lives. Actually, I thought that teachers were supposed to be spending every waking moment marking essays and preparing materials for class.  ;) Actually, in that regard, my English teacher has too much of a personal life cause he refuses to mark essays. Again, thanks for all your advice.  ;D

Just wondering, but you do realise that I’m your annoying student who always rants about his teachers and cannot write an essay to save his life right.

Brenden connected the dots cause he remembered I attended MHS and I posted asking about tutesmart on these forums ages ago. About my essays being fine, I’ll just stare intently at that 5/10 argument analysis. Also, my whole journal is just a place for ranting about my teachers.

This is the type of thing that happens in anonymous forums. I feel you bro, this was honestly me at the start of the year, like in Term 1...I know, Term 1  :o and I was already worrying about things happening 12 months later. But let me tell that it will pass. It did for me and it will for you. Like zofromuxo, K888 and HopefulLawStudent have said, let time do it's thing. Probably the best words of advice, I can give regarding this. While it's nice and helpful even to keep in touch with everyone, you'll soon find that you'll bond more with some and drift a little with others. This isn't to say don't keep in touch with them, more so be open. Open to change and open to gaining and losing people. Hang in there bro, we've only just started the last sprint of our marathon! Best wishes!

Today I spent most of the day in the library at Monash university and I just got back home. I did a heap of study and I’m pretty satisfied with what I’ve done today. I was pretty surprised that I spotted quite a few other high schoolers studying for VCE exams in the library. I guess that everyone (including me) is desperate to really nail the rest of their exams. What really bothered me today in the last few hours, when I got back to the library after lunch, was that there were people talking pretty loudly while everyone else was silent and studying. It’s one of the things that really annoys me. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I’ve studied quite a bit for methods, but I’m worried that I’ll drop marks for stupid mistakes. I dropped like 8 marks in the 2012 exam and they were nearly all minor mistakes because I didn’t pay enough attention to the question. I’ve been keeping a list of these mistakes, but sometimes I repeat the mistake anyway. Hopefully, I can really drill out these stupid mistakes by exam time. Also been spending too much time listening to see you again, cause listening to sad music in a depressing time of my life is obviously going to make it better.  :P

I’ve been to the law library before and I feel awkward going there as a high school student, especially if I’m in my school uniform. I’ve been going to mathesons, which is usually quiet, but there are some exceptions.

Any other libraries you'd recommend? I've just been going to state, and the constant sounds of footsteps is starting to annoy me...

yeah some uni students even don't like going in because of the law students ahah

Matheson I sometimes go. There are some "quiet" areas not sure if they are as strict as law but definitely quiet. Other places would be the basement of Hargraves library. (EDIT: beaten by J41)

I go state sometimes ahah but usually only early in the semester when I have time to hangout in the city  :P and also because you need a UoM student card to be in melbourne uni's libraries

RMIT, i think lvl 8 are for students, not entirely sure but my mates sometimes go there. In state, everyone goes to the chess room to study, but usually the side halls on the first floor are pretty quiet.

If you're down south-east suburbs way, the library at Monash Peninsula is potentially the quietest library I've ever been in, plus, there's always heaps of free seats. ;)

Seconding (maybe thirding) basement of HAL, though.

You can always try RMIT's library with the silent area.

Got a lot done in the library today, which I’m pretty happy with. Hopefully I can do another exam 1 before the end of the day. I’m really tired right now after the month long grind so far, but I’m going to push until the end cause I only have a bit left. Right now I’m listening to Yiruma’s river flows in you, which is so relaxing. :)

Just heard a guitar cover of it, which was way better than I expected. It was actually really good, but I still prefer the piano version over it. The piano version just sounds so elegant and soothing.

Exams are nearly over now. I’ve got specialist exam 2 tomorrow, which is really scary considering that I’m still making careless mistakes even if I know how to do the question. Hopefully the stress on the day makes me more alert and not more careless. After specialist is chemistry and physics. I’ve done a decent amount of preparation for chemistry but I never feel prepared for it. For physics, I really need to cram as much as possible cause I’m honestly screwed for it. I’m excited for after my exams where I can just chill and hopefully not worry about my results. I’m praying that my SEAS carries me over the line for whatever course I choose. I think SEAS is the only reason why I’m not panicking like hell.

How I felt coming out of exams (not the approximated scores after checking atarnotes answers)
English  :-\ It wasn’t bad but wasn’t excellent because of the comparative prompt which was much harder than I expected
Mathematical Methods Exam 1  :( I came out of this exam feeling incredibly badly cause I made heaps of mistakes which I had to fix. After checking my answers with the ones provided on atarnotes, I found out that I did pretty well.
Mathematical Methods Exam 2 :( I came out raging and swearing because I thought it was absurdly difficult. I pulled out my favourite Medea quote, “life has no pleasure left dear friends, I want to die”. After checking the atarnotes answers, I think I didn’t do as badly as expected but I still did pretty badly.
Specialist Mathematics Exam 1  :) I came out feeling pretty good about this because it was much easier than expected. After checking my answers with the ones on atarnotes, I realised that I still made a few careless mistakes which isn’t great.
Specialist Mathematics Exam 2  :-\ I came out feeling ok but not great. I think it was a moderate difficulty exam, but had a fair few easy and tricky questions.
Chemistry   :( I felt great for the first 2 hours, but then I realised that I had 20 marks worth of questions left in the last 20 minutes. I luckily finished on time, but I didn’t feel great coming out of the exam
Physics :) I felt good coming out of this exam. I don’t think I did well, but the exam went smoothly.

After my physics exam I plan to hopefully write some guides for methods, which has been my best subject throughout the year. Honestly, I’m not one of those amazing methods students and in fact my methods study score probably won’t be good, but I think I can offer some helpful advice to the younger year levels.

I’m finally done. VCE is officially over.  ;D It honestly feels really anticlimactic especially after all the studying in the leadup to exams. I think I want to thank HopefulLawStudent and my methods teacher who were the two people keeping me sane and really helped me learn. I’m really grateful to them for all they’ve done to help me especially after my unique experiences with my other teachers. I also want to thank all the friends that have supported me throughout the year. They’ve had to endure the pain of having to hear me rant about VCE for the past year. I’m going to relax and just chill for now, but I’ll be back to post and help people out on atarnotes.

Among many other individuals you were an integral part of my VCE journey, your constant help, advice and insight are something of such a sheer insurmountable magnitude that gratitude can no longer suffice. So although it wont amount to much, on behalf of many and from myself, we thank you for your service this year!! I hope our paths cross in the future at University because you beam personal qualities I respect, yet it is your assiduous and tenacious nature that is to be revered by all. ENJOY YOUR HARD EARNED BREAK!!

I've been reading your posts consistently since the start of the year back when I too was new to AN. I have to say your wisdom and understanding is inspiring, and particularly your journal is fantastic as many have pointed out.

I hope you take the time to relax and try to forget about VCE until ATAR day. Look forward to seeing you around on AN!

Definitely THE vce journal I could relate to. Always a pleasure to read this and know that others are experiencing exactly what I've been experiencing. (but fortunately not the bad teachers- but with your dedication I don't think it was much of a problem)

CONGRATZ FOR FINISHING VCE 2017!~~~~ ;D

Be sure to stay around in AN next year, I know I will :D In the end, I personally have learnt so much skills and knowledge from VCE that I can take with me for the rest of my life, and I hope you can relate to this. (teamwork, taking initiative etc.) So, regardless of our results I hope you will flourish irl  :P

Actually having these teachers was quite the obstacle to overcome. Well, when people ask me why I didn’t do well in VCE, at least I have an excuse.  :P I’ll stay around on AN next, year but I don’t think I’ll be active as I’ve been this year cause I’ll probably have a lot of new obligations and I’ll probably be really busy. I hope I flourish in real life, but being the socially inept, vertically challenged, chubby asian that I am, I probably won’t.  :P Anyway, all the best to you. Hi zhen,

I realise I haven't posted all that often on ATARNotes this year, but I certainly have kept up with reading your journal over these past months. I really appreciate the honesty and thought you've put into these posts. I've experienced very similar circumstances with some teachers, SACs and exams this year, so I can assure you that I know exactly how you feel - reading your journal always assured me that I was never entirely alone in my frustration.  :)

You've been so dedicated and hard-working all year - we all recognise that you've done everything you can to receive your best result and ultimately, that is all something that we should aspire to achieve. I really hope that you're proud of yourself and the enormous amount of effort you've put into your VCE journey.

I understand that the anxious wait for results and the thought of the open-ended future that lies ahead can be quite daunting. I have no doubt that you will flourish in all aspects of university life next year. Promise us all that you'll continue to take challenges into your stride and always persevere, even if the road ahead seems difficult.

Thank you so very much for all that you've contributed to the AN community this year and best wishes for December 15th.  :)

Thanks for such a heartwarming message. Best wishes to you too.  :) Also, since you’ve finished your exams, maybe you could also start posting a bit more and helping out the lower year levels. Would love to see you around the forums.  ;D

Ok, now for the shameless advertising on my own journal. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been really busy hanging out with friends and watching anime. But, I think that watching anime has started to get a bit boring (like all hobbies when you’ve spent a ton of time on them). So, to prevent the boredom from really setting in, I’m planning to start tutoring. Honestly, I’m not quite sure how I’m going to do for my subjects, but I really want to tutor next year cause it’s something I enjoy doing. So, for the rest of the time from now until results day, I plan on offering free tuition. I plan on tutoring mathematical methods, which is the only subject which I did decently in my SACs and the subject I have a some confidence in. I have experience helping out friends and tutoring grade 1 students when I was volunteering, but I’ve never tutored random strangers who are around the same age as me. I think that offering this free tutoring service will be giving back to the atarnotes community and helping students out. It’ll also be allow me to improve my teaching skills and hopefully have something down if my results don’t end up being amazing. So if you’re a struggling student who’s having difficulty in methods, pm me for details and hopefully I can help you out.

Edit: The shameless advertising didn’t work out lol. I upped the ante by mentioning my school, which will hopefully attract some students. Seriously, I’m laughing at how I’m offering a free service and literally no one is even curious enough to message me.

I’m going to put a massive list of things I plan to do during the holidays. I’ll probably add to this list if things pop up.
Also, still haven’t gotten any messages of interest for free tutoring.  :'( I’m guessing that no one would trust someone to tutor them without knowing their score, even if it’s free.

You probably have to push it a bit to get the first few people (even if they're younger people that you're helping with their maths), but once you get a few, you'll be fine. I'd also recommend posting on facebook about it!

I’m here left wondering who you are right now cause I have no clue from your username. Edit: Did a bit of stalking and saw that you’re rank 1 in MHS for methods, so I think I know who you are. Also, I’m guessing that you found out my identity from Eric11267. Just to confirm, we both had a “unique” experience in English this year right? Edit 2: If you’re who I think you are, you found out during the year 12 photo after the English trial exam or Eric11267 talks way too much about me.

Right now I just want to get some experience and see whether or not tutoring is for me (which is why I’m offering it for free). For now I’ll just leave this on Atarnotes and see if anyone messages me. Right now my school is going through the transition to a new year level type thing, so it’ll be a massive hassle for teachers if I asked them about this stuff cause they’re probably not going to be in contact with their this year’s students at all. I’ll probably do more intensive advertising on facebook and other places if I actually start wanting to tutor seriously. But, for now all I want is one or two students as a way to get experience and help someone out that’s struggling.

Actually, zhen has a very good point. If you go into your studying with the idea that you will enjoy the content, your schooling will usually be a) more enjoyable and b) better for your brain, and you will actually find that it has applications that you can toy with in your mind.

Studying is fun when it isn’t forced down people’s throats and enjoying studying obviously helps out for motivation. Personally I enjoyed the texts I studied in English when I read them over the holidays to a certan degree. But, after being shoved into VCE English with the circumstance you’re all probably aware of already, English became a massive grind and just not an enjoyable subject. So when studying becomes independent of school, it can be really fun.

Now to talk about how I’ve spent my time since my last update. I’ve been hanging out with friends and now I’m officially done with school. We had our last school event which was speech night. It was pretty boring in my opinion with long winded speeches. Over the past few days I’ve just been chilling. I’ve also been exercising a bit every day, but not enough. I should probably start doing more productive stuff soon cause I’m getting bored of just chilling every day.

Ok, so I’m getting more and more nervous about results day and stressing out about what score I’ll get, which I know is absolutely pointless, but I still do it. A lot of stuff has happened over the holidays, so I’ve been able to keep myself busy. But, things have slowed down and now I’m stressing out a lot more than I should. I’m just hoping that I get a score that I’m content with. Anyway, right now I should probably be distracting myself with some good shows to watch.

What are you watching at the moment? :)

I was watching 13 reasons why, but stopped cause I needed something a bit more lighthearted. Instead, I’m just watching random youtube videos for now, but I’m not sure how long that’ll distract me.

I couldn't agree more!! It's funny because I've been looking forward to having no more school exams ever since I can remember, but now that it's here...it's a lot more boring than expected. I remember how sometimes I got through work with the thought 'It's okay, when VCE is over I will watch a tonne of Youtube videos and anime and play all my games again!!!'. But now, although I watch Youtube sometimes (especially gameplays lelel), I'm mostly taking naps and listening to music to pass the time. This morning I did a lot of the chores partly because I got tired of sitting in my room, and now our kitchen, living room and dining room are quite clean! Mum is pretty happy, to say the least ;D

There's this weird emptiness when I realise that it's over. VCE is over. And at the end of this week is gonna be the day. *dun dun dunnnn*

I’m really nervous about atar results which are coming out. But, I realise that if I end up getting a bad result, it doesn’t make me any less of a person. Receiving my atar doesn’t somehow change who I am. Honestly, it doesn’t mean anything other than giving me a place in the course I want to get into or getting a scholarship. I realise that worrying about my atar changes absolutely nothing, but I still worry about it. Hopefully I’m satisfied with the results I receive, but I know that if I don’t get high, it’s not the end of the world.

Ok, so this is going to be my last journal entry. Results came out and I feel oddly indifferent towards them. I looked at the results and saw that I was above 94 (the monash commerce/law cutoff with monash guarantee) and I just didn’t really care that much for some reason. If anyone is looking at this in the coming years, you need to realise that VCE is just the starting point for your massive journey through life. If you get into your first preference course, then ATAR doesn’t really matter anymore other than for scholarships. If you don’t get into your first preference, there are probably many different alternative pathways to get into your desired course or field. I’m not saying that your ATAR isn’t important. Your ATAR is actually pretty important, however it’s not everything. Your ATAR doesn’t define who you are as a human being.

Ok, so I know I said that I felt indifferent towards my ATAR, well actually I did feel a tinge of disappointment. I’m actually not satisfied with how I am currently as an individual, but that’s not necessarily because of my ATAR. I feel like I didn’t study as hard as I should have during VCE and I also feel like I should have volunteered more or worked during my high school years. I honestly feel like I’ve wasted my high school years half-heartedly studying, when I should have done more meaningful things such as volunteering or participating in activities that allow me to experience new things. I feel like I’ve been tricking myself throughout the year and blaming my teachers. I still do feel like my teachers negatively influenced my studies, however I should have been able to overcome that adversity and those bad circumstances. I know some of you may offer me kind words of consolation. However, I want to be a person who can meet the standards that they set themselves, as I ultimately decide how I feel about myself. I’m not judging myself by the scores I received, but rather on how hard I studied. Also, I don’t have crazy expectations of how much I need to study every day, so you don’t need to worry about that. I just feel like if I lower these realistic standards I set upon myself, I’ll be tricking myself yet again. So, my resolutions for next year are to study as hard as I can (much harder than during VCE), to volunteer regularly, to work as a tutor or any part time position that will take me and to participate in interesting extracurricular activities. I want to be able to balance all these things and still do well in university. That’s my goal for the next few years.

Ok, thanks to everyone who has been reading my updates and especially to anyone who posted advice or anything to cheer me up.  ;D I’ve now finished my long and arduous journey through VCE and I’m about to take a step towards my next path in life. Hopefully, I’ll be able to experience new things and make some good friends. Onwards to my next journey...
