Our biology teacher has been talking to us this week about how many people use silly marks because they do not fully answer the question. She recommended that we practice addressing the key word in the question and making sure to fully address every aspect.

I thought I would put together a thread of common words used in questions and how to address them.

Describe
Give a detailed account of what occurs in a specific situation.

Explain
Write about why a fact or circumstance is the way it is.

Assess
Measure the value or importance of something.

Compare
Comment on the similarities and differences between two things.

Distinguish
Discuss the differences between two things. (Also contrast.)

Relate
Discuss the similarities between two things. (Also compare.)

Analyse
Examine something closely and provide context as to how it fits into the whole.

Examine
Look closely at something, explaining details and meaning, cause and effect or other judgements.

Criticise
Explore the problems, limitations or weaknesses of something.

Define
Say what something means.

Discuss
Examine something closely. (Looking at different viewpoints.)
