Should I choose Specialist Maths?

Hi, subject selections are less than a week away and I need some advice on whether I should do Specialist maths next year for VCE or not. I am confirmed to choose: English 1/2, chemistry 1/2, biology 1/2, methods 1/2 and Chinese 3/4. I am hoping to enter the medical field, so would it be more useful to choose spesh, further or physics as my 6th subject? I have asked around and teachers have recommended me to do Specialist as I am passionate about maths, however I am aware of the workload and difficulty of the subject whereas my main focus is on methods and chemistry. Would it be worth it to pick Specialist or not?

Please help !Thanks :D

Hi,

I’m not sure if I’m the right person to reply (I personally didn’t do spesh), but since you are very passionate in maths, spesh does sound like a good option for you.
You mentioned that you hope to enter the medical field, so in terms of ‘usefulness’, physics is a good option to take. Physics underpins a lot of the science in medicine, so learning it helps to give you a more ‘wholistic’ view. I’m sure you’re probably also considering Monash biomedical science/Melb biomedicine as your backup courses, and these courses actually have a compulsory physics subject for you to take. So doing physics really helps you there since you would already have the foundational knowledge.
I’m not sure if your school allows this, but have you asked them whether you could take Chinese 3/4 externally? That way you can have 6 subjects that you could take internally, and you could include both physics and spesh. I know that’s a lot of pressure, but if you happen to not like one of those subjects, you could drop one of them before year 12.

hmm physics would be really good for someone interested in medical technologies and imaging, the stats component of specialist is really good for any sort of science-based uni course.

I think it would be good to pick up spec 1/2 to see whether you are comfortable about and if not drop it for something else in year 12.
