What's the deal with textbooks? Do most people buy them? Haven't sorted them out yet (pretty late I know haha but don't start for a few days), has anyone started a subject without the textbook and accessed from there?

Sorry for being a first year  :P

Never needed to buy a textbook during my Bcom, I found lecture slides to be suffice.

I learn better by reading books instead of lecture slides (or anything on a screen over a long period, as it strains my eyes) so i ended up using quite a few of my textbooks as well as printed lecture notes.
That's not to say that I didn't use the lecture slides..I did that preemptively. If I didn't understand them I resorted to textbook material.
Also should say that rarely do commerce subjects cover the entire textbook, as much of the chapters are skipped.

how important are doing pre lecture/tutorial readings from the textbook if so many people dont even bother purchasing the textbook? are lecture slides sufficient/comparable to doing the pre readings and would lecture slides be enough to study off for exams if you do not purchase the textbook? (this is for commerce by the way)

I don't know of anyone who does pre readings.

If you watch/attend all lectures and do all the tute work you're ahead of the average student anyways lol

For lecture slides, does anyone know how to print out multiple pages onto one page?

might need to make sure you've downloaded the file onto your pc and opened it with adobe reader or whatever, as opposed to having the pdf open in your web browser. hope this helps.

Given all this Marxist/commy stuff on campus, is it possible to get some conservative speakers to deliver some talks as well? Just think it'd be fair to have a more balanced and diverse perspective on world affairs at university as all I've seen is leftist propaganda and it's only the first day back...
