Title: General Weather Thread
Post by: Joseph41 on December 15, 2018, 02:05:43 pm
Use this thread to discuss what the weather is doing at the present time, or what is forecasted for the future.

In Melbourne, it's been absolutely whack recently. Super hot, then super rainy. Yesterday the storms were intense; all of my relevant trains and trams were cancelled indefinitely.

In saying that, I still prefer it to the heat. Much nicer.

EDIT: It's just started hailing. Blimey.

Storm just finished here. Lots of wind, rain and thunder. It's silent now.

I love stormy & cold weather - hate hot/humid/summer weather with a passion. Would rather it be 15 degrees and pouring as opposed to 35 degrees and extremely hot. At least with the cold weather you can add layers - unfortunately in the hot weather, removal of layers is limited... :)

It's really windy in the west! Just in case Newport station gets flooded or w/e again, I'm catching a train 40mins earlier than needed. 😅

3aw radio lady or someone mentioned that they saw lightning in the city!

Yesterday was nuts- very stormy. Power was cut due to lightning for over 6 hours. It cut as I was cooking dinner aha 💔

I was in that area for athletics and a little while back when that red patch passed over us, it prompted the cancellation of the event.
The worst thing was that I was at the start line as the event was cancelled.

The best thing about it is the fact that it's so... Australian. I mean, not only are the crocs and sharks and spiders and snakes and berries trying to kill you, so is the actual sky.

Wish me luck walking to and from work in the storm tonight, folks :')

Somehow my house has missed the majority of the rain today. Having said that, I went riding along flooded bike paths today and it probably wasn't the smartest decision. Currently beautiful sunshine here though I'm sure it won't last long

The constant changing of weather & conditions.. let's just say its doing wonders for my hayfever and allergies.... *sigh*

Absolutely abhor Melbourne's unexpected and abnormal sudden change in weather -___-
Sucks to live in Australia just because of the weather :[

Fun fact: When we were trying to lure the British out here post-WW2, one of the selling points was that we had better weather than them.  And on balance I probably prefer Melbourne weather to much of the UK (haven't lived there, but have heard the complaints).

Quote
Come over to the sunny side now. Australia, a great place for families, an opportunity for you, fine for your wife, great for your children.

OK, I have a couple of grandparents who migrated from UK to Melbourne back then - I guess I'm not sorry they came :)

To be fair, the ads might not have been focusing on Melbourne specifically:

Its hot and humid. The surprising thing is that there's so much dust in the air at the moment. I can't see the sun and they look like fog but it's really dust. Why is it when I come back over the mountains from Sydney, the weather is the complete opposite.

Yes!!! Mozzies are the epitome of Australian wildlife! After getting back from overseas, they didn't even show me a day of mercy before attacking me.  :'(

Sometimes I think they like certain blood types more than others, as I am a usual target.

A little about the weather (not to derail the weather thread  ;D) : I feel like mosquitoes are more active in humidity.

The weather has been as follows today:

Morning - Hot and sunny, minimal clouds.
Afternoon - Large gusts of wind bringing over some dust. Yes, DUST. Hot and humid too.
Now - It's storming and raining. The sky is orange.

I would like to question what is going on with my towns weather. It's so weird.

Just got back from a fam camping trip to the Snowy Mountains, and it was terrifically balmy! Some of the overnight temps were well below 10 degrees, and some days I even wore a jumper.  :o

Though I still managed to get really sunburnt somehow?? Perhaps it was the longer daylight hours - didn't get dark until about 9.30pm, because the altitude of our campsite was 1500m.  ;D

Sounds great!
Sunburn-wise, though, I'd expect you would get more sunburnt at a higher altitude because there's less atmosphere to block the UV.  The rough numbers on Wikipedia suggest you'd be exposed to 20 - 30% more UV up there.  Still a great part of the world to visit, though...

That's a hefty increase in UV!
Well, lesson learned, now I know to be more careful at high altitudes.  ;D

Gross weather in general tbh. What Adelaide cops we almost certainly will cop similar - always moves in our direction.

Melb - outer suburbs are copping it particularly in the NE/E, higher than predicted temps (usually it's always around 1-2 higher than the CBD but this year it's blown out to in some cases 4-5 higher). I actually don't even think the Bureau knew what the temp was gonna be today - they kept shuffling Thurs and Fri's temps around.

Dunno how anybody concentrates in this heat.

We had some pretty impressive lightning the other night. First time I remember a good lightning storm in Melbourne for a long time (though unfortunately my view was a bit restricted by being in a valley with trees around, and I kind of didn't want to be out standing under them...)

Based on what I've been seeing for the morning and early afternoon-if we get a month's worth of rain later today as predicted. It will be the most dramatic as fuck thing. If not, the worst incorrect prediction.

Blimey.

That whole quote is quite literally the whole of Australia when u think about it mate🤣

I also saw two separate rainbows.

Today I left my house for the station, around 6 minutes run away. It wasn't raining at all, and I'd even seen the sun ten minutes before. By the time I reached the station it was hailing and pouring and I was soaking wet.  Fortunately I was nearly dry by the time I got to Flinders Street...

To the best of my knowledge there has only been one day since the start of winter where the max temp was predicted to reach 20 degrees All this week the min is in the range of -1 to 1 (which is an improvement from earlier). And this has been one of Canberra's warmest winters.

I'd probably flip that - on a weekday I'm in an air-conditioned office, and it can be pleasant walking in the evenings (like tonight).  Whereas on a weekend I'm more likely to want to be out walking, and prefer walking in 20 degrees to 30 (that is, if the weather will ever give up on this notion that most rain should fall on weekends...)

I think rainy days are great on weekends because you don't really have to go anywhere if you don't want to; you can snuggle up or go out and get wet for the fun of it, whereas on weekdays you have to go to school or work so it's more miserable. The storms this weekend in particular have been wonderful, because the rain is cool but the actual air is quite warm.

(Ironic Erutepa and I  were gonna go swimming though, haha)

I think the BOM in Canberra is broken.
On Saturday the weather for today was supposed to be 50% chance of rain and 1-10ml
On Sunday it predicted it would be 80% chance of rain and 5-15ml and a possible storm

There was some lightning last night, no signs of a storm today and according to the BOM there has been 0.0ml of rain since 9am (...except that's not true because I've seen a few drops).

But it's finally cold for the first time in weeks so I don't really mind.

After how crazy yesterday's weather was, it's so sunny and still and glorious at my place today!
We love sunny weather! I've got my fingers crossed it stays that way!

Today is perfect - low temperature but warm sun, clear skies, no wind... so good.  ;D

I sat outside in the sun of (a slightly cheeky long lunch)

Downside is now I'm locked in the lab and it's warm enough to not need my jumper on now 😅

Every time September 1 comes around I mourn that the delicious winter of cosy blankets and easy exercise and cuddly snuggling and hot soup is over.

Coming up next: burning heat, harsh blinding brightness, inability to exercise, sleepless nights, and constant sticky sweat.  Woooooooo.

But also: ice-cream, literally any cold dessert, sunshine in the parks with an occasional cold breeze, smell of flowers, lots and lots of birds flying, Halloween, Christmas, BOXING DAY, and with a little bit of luck maybe even shopping with your friends at the end of the year!

Ngl, I pretty much only eat ice-cream in winter, because eating ice-cream in summer means leaving the house to go get ice-cream. Sunshine in the park means sunburns (doesn't matter how much sunscreen I lather on - lather being an apt description of how much I apply lol), and honestly have never noticed a smell from flowers? Also unsure why birds is anything other than just a thing. Halloween is this thing that I'm confused why we celebrate and never cared for. Also, boxing day is the literal worst, I have a fear of crowds so large you can't escape, and that's all BD is D:

... I mean, yeah, sorry to royally and completely shut down everything you seem to love about the summer, but this is definitely not one for me. . Am curious to hear why you enjoy all of these things when I don't, though?

Only bonus for me in summer is sitting on the porch with a nice cold beer in hand - but something something y'all too young for that

I think there are things I like about all seasons and all months.  Right now, I look forward to seeing green leaves re-appear (which has already been happening) and a variety of flowers (which again has already been happening) and days continuing to get longer.  A bit warmer would suit my Melbourne tastes fine - more of the weather we had on the weekend, perhaps.  In summer time walking within an hour of sunset is not only usually cooler, but there's also a much greater chance of seeing wildlife somewhere like the Dandenong Ranges.

But it also just varies from day to day and year to year - I can remember say back to back Australian Opens where one started with four 40+ days, and the next started with what felt like early spring.  I just wait to see what we get and make the best of it - because it's not like I can change it...

I have brown skin so I have never really had sunburns!

BAHAHA I live in a neighbourhood with a lot of birds and flowers and it's full of nature, so I enjoy seeing new species come and go at different seasons. Also, almost all my neighbours have a lot of flowers in their lawn so it's nice to see some colour whenever I go on walks and come back from school.

Halloween is this thing that I'm confused why we celebrate and never cared for. Also, boxing day is the literal worst, I have a fear of crowds so large you can't escape, and that's all BD is D:
I don't like the celebrating part of halloween and I've never celebrated it, but I enjoy seeing decorations out on people's lawns. I realise that I sound like some stalker creep who just sits outside people's houses all day.

To be honest, I do prefer Winter and Autumn climate over Summer, but I like change ahahaha  ;D

It was rather pleasant today in Melbourne, I hope everyone (including those of us stuck in Metro Melbourne) made use of the good weather today! 🥰

Today in Newcastle: Less rain, still flooding, leaking buildings and cancelled classes.
