What sorta ENTER do you need to get a scholarship? And what are they given for?
At monash, most of the scholarships can be categorised into two main types: general, or non-faculty specific, and faculty specific. There are several further sub-groups of each. I'm not going to name all of the scholarships since there's too many, but some 'basic' ones are here. BTW, what I know is biased mostly towards the Engineering and science faculties.
For example
General: (apply to any faculty)
Schl for Excellence: The best monash has to offer. All CSP fees paid PLUS 6 grand per year. Depending on your uni life-style, you're effectively being paid to go to monash. The problem is the only guaranteed way to get one is 99.95.
Schl for Excellence and Equity: Smart people who for whatever reason have been "disadvantaged" according to monash. They say that you need 95.00 to be eligible, and are valued at $6k p/a.
There are others I dont know much about like the accomodation ones.
Faculty-specific: (if accepted, these scholarships force you to remain in the respective faculty for the duration of your course, otherwise, you lose them. IE: science scholarship = some form of science; can be single or double degrees, as long as it involves a science course.
*edit: HOWEVER, it seems you cannot transfer to another course that has the awarding faculty and another "owning faculty's" input.
Monash gives the example: You have an Arts scholarship, you do Bachelor of Arts, that's good. But if you want to move over to Arts/Law, your Arts scholarship can't go with you because Arts/Law is 'owned' and mostly managed by the Law faculty.)
I think all faculties offer these, some more than others. From what I can tell you, the Science and Engineering Faculty scholarships are more or less identical. $6k p/a in the respective faculty, and you more or less need a high 99 to get one, though this depends on competition of the year. Recently introduced were the Engineering faculty's "Engineering Excellence Awards." Same value as the ones i just mentioned - with one major difference. There are roughly FIFTY (yes, 50) of them! And to be eligible you need 98.00 at least.
There are dozens more scholarships and bursaries which I don't know about, and there's heaps more info in the scholarships handbook and on their website at:
http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/scholarships/A SIMPLE ANSWER to your question costargh is that 99+ is a must for purely academic scholarships and they're given to the applying students with the best ENTERs. Another theme is that they like to attract the bright students who are socioeconomically disadvantaged in some way.
Anyone out there feel free to disagree with some of what I've just said! I know next to nothing about IT, commerce, music and arts, etc scholarships.
*edit:
A friend of mine was offered an IBL scholarship - the value is awesome if you do BIS at monash.
