99.95 ATARs
« on: July 13, 2019, 06:46:24 pm »

I was just wondering how many people get a 99.95 ATAR each year. I know it would vary due to cohort size, but I'm thinking generally.

Is there the same number of people who achieve each ATAR or do more people achieve ATARs at middle ranks?

I assume you mean in Victoria.
Last year 36 people received the highest possible ATAR score. It used to be higher, (47 in 2014 from my memory).

Edit: As for other states I am not too sure.

Yes, from what I heard, the competition will get more intense in the following years (but of course, that is just an assumption!)

I shouldn't get any harder than any other year, 99.95 basically means you have an aggregate score better than 99.95% of the cohort - so the rough percentage that obtains that atar is basically constant (however the number of people changes since the number of people who complete VCE change each year).

I suppose that's a relief! :)

Sine, one question: Do you know if the number of people who are getting perfect VCE score is increasing, decreasing, or roughly constant? Because, like I said before, in 2014, 47 people got an atar of 2014, 35 in 2015, and 36 in 2018 - (idk about the other years). From this all I can say is that  the number of people entirely depends on people who are completing VCE (once again, I am not too sure).

Edit: In case this may help you, my year of high school completion is in 2022 (So I am in year 9 right now).

hmm don't really know the numbers but I would guess increasing - on the fact of general population growth trends and more people having the opportunity for high school. However, you can see that more people means there will be more people with the ability to compete for those high ATARs.

Tbh I wouldn't get worried within the semantics of it all there is not much you can do to change the number of those ATARs they give out - and plenty of very bright students will short of it - even if they don't' do anything wrong (e.g. someone can get 6 50's but not get it if none of their subjects scale over 50).

Thanks a lot!!!  :)

Edit: Sorry for my edits, (I'm just trying to avoid double posting). I know Spesh maths scales over 50. But are there any science-related subjects that scale over 50?
Sorry for bothering u soo much, much appreciated  :D

methods may - in my year it did scale over 50 but some years it doesn't.

It kinda sucks for some students if they aren't interested in these subjects but to go for those extremely high ATARs you generally need to do a LOTE or Specialist Maths. The vast majority of 99.9+s  (some years all of those students)  have had done at least 1 of these.
