Two Extension Studies

Hi, currently I am in year 11 and completing three unit 3/4 subjects (methods, physics, chemistry), so next year I will be completing only three unit 3/4 subjects (specialist, Japanese, English). I am then put into a position for extension studies, is it possible to do two? I was thinking maths and physics. What are your thoughts on it? Anyone done two? How does it go for my ATAR? Thanks

You can do two extension subjects, however, from different universities only. I wouldn't really recommended it, as only one can be counted towards your ATAR. Also there would be quite a bit of workload, and unnecessary traveling that could be spent towards valuable study time.

I'd recommend doing only one extension subject. You can only count 6 subjects + 1 extension increment (as far as I'm aware) so doing two extension subjects would be extra work for no ATAR benefit. Even though 5 subjects in year 12 is manageable, it will be better for your ATAR to concentrate on 4 since I imagine you'd be aiming high with those subjects.

Thanks for that. I hear that doing the extension studies also goes to a credit on a uni degree/course. Can I benefit from doing two? Is credit transferable from uni to uni? Like, if I was to the maths one at Melbourne and the physics at Monash, but I end up doing a full uni physics course at Melbourne, can I transfer the Monash credit to Melbourne, and is the maths credit still valid?
 Thanks so much for this!

Uni extension counts as a 5th or 6th subject

it CAN be credited but it isn't always. obviously you need to be doing a similar degree to the extension study (although at melbourne they have breadths so that might be flexible?) but it's definitely possible.

https://futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/admissions/admission_with_credit/credit_calculator this is a little outdated but if you've looked at the physics extension course and know what you'd be doing (name/subject code) then it'll tell you whether or not it can be credited at melbourne. monash has a similar one too (:

as far as benefits from doing /two/ go, idk. a lot of the time people do seven subjects to have a safety net (because then if you screw up one, it won't affect your atar), but that wouldn't work in this case. one extension automatically won't count towards your atar, even if you do the best in both those subjects. so it might not be worth your time in year 12, especially if you've got content heavy subjects. but you would save money, because extension in year 12 is cheaper than doing the course as part of your degree (although you do have to pay pretty much upfront if it's at monash). idk, i personally wouldn't do two because i want to focus on year twelve, but i'm sure it would be a positive experience as long as it doesn't impact on your studying for year twelve subjects!
