Hi UniMelb, I'm going into Year 12 this year and may or may not be studying with you next year! (Hopefully the former)  :)

I have a few questions.

1) Can I major in anything I want to in undergrad science, and still get into Postgrad Medicine? (I want to do B. Sci, majoring in Psych)
2) When are campus tours avaliable?
3) If I decide to visit the main Parkville Campus on my own (self-guided tour), do I need to go to some kind of admin office or can I start from wherever I want?
3a) If I visit the Parkville campus on my own, what places on campus can I (or can't I) visit?

Thanks,

- John

Listens to K-Pop (Twice, Red Velvet, MAMAMOO) and Christmas music all year round.

I think you have to complete a second year prerequisite in each of anatomy, biochemistry and and physiology so I don't think you can major in psych. (Someone more knowledgeable, please correct me if I'm wrong)

Monday's and Friday's at 10am

I think you can start from wherever you want. There is more information here.

As long as you complete the three prerequisites (Human physiology (PHYS20008), Principles of Human Structure (ANAT20006) and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BCMB20002)), you can get into postgraduate medicine with whatever major you choose. You can even get in with an Art's degree (as long as you've done the pre-requisites it doesn't matter). The three prerequisites require you to have completed BIOL10004 and BIOL10005 and either CHEM10003 + CHEM10004 or CHEM10009 (this is considered an equivalent of both chemistry subjects).

You can start anywhere if you want to tour the university yourself. Most buildings will be open to walk through during the week. Some buildings have restricted access (require a keycard) but most buildings on campus you are free to enter and look around. You can even come and sit in on a lecture if you want to.

How long does it take for advanced standing to be approved? My previous degree was also at UoM.

hi uni melb, this will sound dumb but i was just wondering that if i was to do bachelor of science for example, would i see people who do a different course? i hope not because there are people who hate me who are probably going to uni melb with me next year but they are in different courses so i am hoping that i wont see them anyway lol!!!!!!!!!!! anxiety anxiety....

Breadth subjects mean that you will be studying subjects outside of the BSci course and people who aren't studying science may choose to take a science breadth. Biomed students may also be in science subjects (not at a first year level but for classes such as pharmacology).

Uni is a very large place, most first year subjects consist of between 500-1500 students. If there are people you are having problems with, you don't have to go anywhere near them, its not like you would have to sit next to them in a lecture or tutorial.

Days off are absolutely possible. I had a long weekend each week. One of my friends managed to get two days off a week, but that was a little crazy.

Contact hours are usually around the low 20s.

Quick question on choosing breadths - do you choose them based on whether you're interested in them? Or whether you can learn something from them that will help you in the future?
2018 : VCE
EAL | Maths Methods | Chemistry | Biology | Environmental Science | Indonesian 2nd Language
2019 : BSci @ UoM
CHEM 10003 | BIOL 10004 | PHYC 10005 | MGMT 10002
CHEM 10004 | BIOL 10005 | BIOL 10001 | ANSC 10001

Either. It's really up to you. Personally I'd say go for whatever you're interested in. They're a good opportunity to indulge your personal interests.

Just discovered that UoM offer a ‘Video Games’ subject (CCDP10003). I was considering doing this as a breadth solely out of personal interest.

Anybody done it? Good/bad??

Hey guys, I changed my mind about my exact study plan and enrolled in a small third year subject (ECON30013) after registration had been open for a few days. However, when I click 'Register' on my timetable, there are literally no options (Even the lecture is full). I don't know anyone else doing this subject but I'm assuming I'm not the only one who can't get a spot. Should I submit a CREM request (would much rather be in the Monday tutorial option after the lecture :P), or just wait on it? Would they have to move the lecture room and create more tutorials since it's not listed as a quota subject? This happened in one of my subjects last year, but that was a much bigger subject that was core for some majors (MAST20004/Probability) Thanks
This page would indicate that you may just have to wait but it's probably still worth sending a CREM request and maybe contacting the subject coordinator.

Hey guys,
I’m hoping to take French or Italian 1 as my breadth this semester but I was wondering if anyone knows roughly when these exams would take place? I’m hoping to go away towards the end of the exam period but I’m concerned that by taking a breadth with an exam the dates will clash! If anyone could help me out by letting me know roughly when language exams take place in the exam calendar that would be great :)
