i went to the state library every day in the week leading up to my english exam. and i spent a bit of time studying, admittedly, but most of the time playing chess (or anti-chess) against my friends. and i got 50 for english! so clearly it did have some benefit  :D

Very interesting, maybe I should get into it again. Although I don't see how it will increase my ability in essay writing!

We always played chess in the study room before teachers started telling us off for doing it. But it's not as though chess is a mentally easy game!

If I recall correctly, it's the fact that you play, rather than the level you play at that determines whether you'll receive any benefit from the game! There's very little correlation between playing strength and academic improvement. :)

chess FTW!!!

our school dragged itself somehow into the state finals this year @ brighton grammar, and got our asses wooped and finished 4th last...
we all got a certificate of "participation", simply meaning "i played, but was too shit to be recognised at all whatsoever, here's a certificate to acknowledge my shittiness" xD

was anyone from fsn there?

I usually play as a guest, because I can't be bothered making an account and plus I was pretty busy at school the past term... but I might look into that  ;D

Chess is cool!

Two years ago our school managed 2nd in the Chess Kids State Finals. I still have the trophy.

We won this year as well. Too bad I dropped out in favour of VCE. I blame VCE.
