Memory Confusion

How can we retrieve information from short term memory if its capacity is limited to 7 "bits of information"
Im really confused about how things are stored in short term memory and how they can be retreived if the duration it is stored in is so low and its capacity is also low
Any help would be GREATLY appreaciated:-)

Although one more question if you dont mind:-)
When you said that you retrieve from the sensory memory as well as LTM does that mean in your friend example that you would retrieve the emotional info about frown etc from the sensory memory?
