JMSS or NHS

Hello, i have recently received an offer for a place at JMSS. But the thing is, I'm currently at Nossal, and I'm loving it here. The teachers are good (at least mine are), Im doing well academically, and I feel comfortable here. I want a career preferably in medicine or health (doctor or psychiatrist) as my reason is really because I want to help people on a more personal level.
I'm torn between the two as JMSS is supposedly meant to assist me to get into a med degree at monash uni, since it specialises in maths and science (yes I know it also does other things), and it's so involved with the uni, but I've heard that unless I am a hardcore science person (which I'm not) it won't be great for me. I don't know which one to choose, as I want to choose the best option for my goal, but I'm not sure which one will be more beneficial for me.
If anyone is able to give any relevant information, has gone through similar situations, or has gone to/attends JMSS or someone with advice for my path, please help me. Thanks :)

If I were in your position, you couldn't pay me to move to JMSS. If you love NHS, stay there. That'll help you achieve your goal. Imagine if youwent to JMSS and didn't like it! You'd have to take major regret through two years of very important study lol. Stuff that!
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️

100% endorses you NOT to go to JMSS. It said that you're not a hardcore science person. As you know, they're so into their science. A family friend who is so into science went there and LOVED JMSS. Now she's at ANU on a scholarship dreaming to become a researcher. I don't really know much about JMSS, but I can tell you that the best students that they have there have a huge passion for science.

It's a little bit easier if you apply to Monash med under JMSS. But then again you'd have to realise that there are people already in JMSS who are there for the same reason: get into med.

Up to you ofc. But if you love Nossal (just like I enjoyed my time at MHS), there's no point to changing schools. Unless you live so close to Monash Uni like me.

Although JMSS does generally cater for people who love science, we do cater for other things like technology, maths and for people who end up not liking science then we do offer other subjects not relating to it. Before I was at JMSS, I was pretty deadset on being a neurosurgeon but JMSS has shown me different types of science and it's made me realise different aspects of science which are also interesting too (so your perspectives may change later on).

I wouldn't say we're all hardcore science people but some of us are and it's pretty good (I'm not one of those people don't worry). There are quite a few people in my year level planning to get into med so you'll be with lots of great people who want to get in however if you're with great people at Nossal then I personally think you should stay there since they'll be supporting you through VCE. However the cohort of JMSS is really friendly as a whole and you'd fit in really well (I guess the option is up to you really).

Yeah, I've heard a lot about people in JMSS who want to do med.
I'm the all rounder type of student, I'll try in any subject, and science is interesting for me, just not enough for me to want to become a scientist. I live around 10 minutes away from the school, so travel time will be cut down heaps.

Thanks. JMSS seems like a great place, with a lot great people. I have friends there who say the same as you do, and I think I'd be fine if I decide to transfer. It's at a 50/50 point for me and it's been bugging my mid for quite awhile. At least I have another week to make up my mind :)

Haha well if it's a 50/50 chance from here then why not go and explore the place? If you have friends at JMSS then maybe (for example) you could come to JMSS one day (it'd have to be before or after school) and they could show you around the place and see if it fits you as a whole? Although JMSS & NHS are selective, we do differ in teaching styles/environment which may work for you or not.

Yeah, I wanted to go on a school tour to have a look for myself, but there aren't any available. My mum has sent an email asking for any possibilities of one, but if not I'll try to ask one of my friends to show me around. From my experience at Nossal, can I assume that JMSS also prepares it's students for uni life? Like in the way that home rooms are called tutorial groups, how there are no bells, and how there's 'open learning spaces' for students to become 'independent' in their learning. If not, then it should be fine for me to adapt anyway,

Pretty much spot on! Home rooms are called mentor groups (but the room is a tutorial room), no bells and the open learning spaces are pretty much what JMSS is about. There's a lack of doors here except for the lab exits and tutorial rooms.

Depends on VCE subjects
If you list what your are Planning to take then I could offer advice as JMSS does not have all popular VC e subjects but is really good at specific ones

I'm planning on doing eng, spesh, methods, chem, psych and the last subject is between bio and french. But the thing is, from ive heard, the only 1/2 subject i can do in year 10 at jmss, is methods (which i dont plan on accelerating in) and at nhs i have the opportunity to do my psych 1/2 (and possibly bio 1/2) next year because i've met the criteria for it. And according to some of my friends there, i cant do french ( if i choose it over bio) as a normal subject but as a co-curricular activity after school for two hours on a wednesday, which i dont have the time for.
im considering bio or french because for bio, i've been recommended to do during school as it will benefit in uni (even though its not a pre req for medicine), and for french because i'm doing well in it, and being fluent in another language (especially a latin european language) will be a vital life skill for me. to be completely honest, my decision will ultimately depend on how the school can cater to my plans.

Research a bit more into JMSS on what languages they offer, your VCE subject plans seem a bit Science related, and that's what JMSS does, cater to Science. You do have to remember, JMSS is not all about Science as well.
And if you love NHS, by all means you can stay there if you want. The working environments are both kind of different, but if you love to explore and be adventurous, then you can go to a new school with a total new experience.

imo, since you want to pursue medicine as a career, I suggest JMSS.
JMSS can teach into great depth and help you with unique resources such as access to Monash Uni! I believe the facilities there will help you achieve your career much easier and more intriguingly. You may even change your mind as to what you want to do in JMSS, because they show you so many brilliant sciences and the unique subjects - wow! Being a maths and science school, I think it is great for your interests (if science interests you). I got accepted into JMSS for year 10 next year too!
Although, Nossal is excellent too. I do not know too much but I think they have a special way of teaching? Idk. You could explore and learn other subjects too instead of mainly science.

Thats just my opinion though  ;) Good luck in your choice  :)
:D
