How important is unit 1&2?

I'm in year 10 and doing 2 unit 3&4 subjects along with a unit 1&2 (chemistry) this year, I'm wondering how should I be allocating my time for them? I'm aiming for 40+ in both my 3&4 subjects but I also want to have a solid foundation for chem.

I've been told that 1&2 chem doesn't have much overlaps in content with 3&4 - does this mean I can mainly focus on my 3&4 subjects and worry about chem next year? (I won't be disregarding it completely obviously) Or should I still focus on them equally?

I'm not worried about my year 10 subjects, most of which I won't continue into VCE anyway.

thanks.

Yeah I wouldn't ignore Chem as you still need to pass it to do 3&4, but definitely put the majority of your eggs in the PE & Bio baskets.

Important in the sense that:
a) You still need an S to actually pass the unit - which means attempting and demonstrating the key skills & outcomes as per study design.
b) Good preparation for Units 3 and 4.

Just because it's Units 1 and 2 and an S is all that is required, doesn't mean it's a bludge and you shouldn't take it seriously. Of course, if you have a Unit 3/4 subject that you are doing at any point, that will take priority. But attitude and preparation can be developed during this year which can then lead to better outcomes later on.

Haha whaaat?
There’s a significant overlap. I don’t know who’s telling you that but I wouldn’t trust their opinion in other things either.
Chem is one of the few subjects where doing the 1/2 and having a good understanding of it is essential for 3/4. There are things that you are required to know for 3/4 that aren’t even taught in the 3/4 textbook because it is assumed knowledge.

Of course, focus more on your 3/4. This is normal and to be expected. I never really bought the school’s ‘treat all your subjects including 3/4s with the same priority ’. That’s a bit silly.
But definitely don’t completely ignore 1/2 as, for most subjects, this will build necessary foundations for the 3/4 counterpart.

^ +1 this.
You really do need to pay attention in chem 3/4, if you wish to achieve a high score. Unless, you're willing to catch up on the summer holidays.
Graduated in 2018. Top 5%.

Definitely agree with the above.
Prioritise your 3/4s; I'd also put more of an emphasis on preparing for assessments/SACs (practice questions!!) for these subjects when they come around as marks do matter.
As for chem 1/2, I'd agree with the above posters that it is actually super important for 3/4. Concepts like stoichiometry/ the mol are essential for next year so definitely make sure you've got the basics down pat. Obviously performance on SACs isn't as important for your 1/2s so don't stress too much about marks but really ensuring you understand this theory will lay down a really helpful foundation for next year; asking extra questions/going over what you don't understand will be worth it for next year :)

Best of luck! Hope you're finding the subjects manageable so far!
