I say it depends on the subject - for maths and chem, my teachers gave us fill-in sheets for our notes, so I used display folders (the kind pi was trying to describe) for those. For maths and science subjects, I would recommend getting exercise books to do textbook questions. For a subject like English, you're less likely to need a notebook, but again, that varies depending on what your teacher prefers. My other subject was French, for which I needed multiple exercise books and folders, there's always lots of handouts and notes.
Tl;Dr an exercise book/display folder combo will serve you well for most subjects. Avoid bulky folders if possible.
At home, I installed two big wall shelves above my desk for all my books and miscellania, in piles and magazine files, depending. I also have a huge bookcase which is over-filled.
