Hello everyone :)

I am in year 11 and thinking about some of my subjects. This year, I am doing both further and methods 3/4 as well as 4 1/2s. My 1/2s are eng lang, chem, french and accounting. I love french and chemistry and I will definitely be keeping them for next year. However, I am not so sure about my other 2 subjects.

Re Eng Lang. I like English language a bit but I find it a bit boring. I have not gotten any scores back so I am unsure of how I am actually doing. My teacher is amazing however I am a little worried about year 12. As it is a much smaller study than English, does that mean it is a lot harder than normal English to score well in? English related subjects have always been my weakness and I want to maximise my score as English has to be in the top 4.

So: English vs English Language??

And now a 4th subject. I am doing accounting at the moment and I like it however I find it quite boring and repetitive. Can someone give me a quick overview of 3/4. I know I have the study design however sometimes the wording is quite broad. The 2 subjects I am thinking of maybe picking up is P.E. or Bio. I think that P.E. seems very interesting and we have a very qualified teacher at my school. My school only does 3/4 so I would not be at a disadvantage. With bio, I have never been super interested in at during years 7-10 at school however I have heard very good things from people on AN.
If anyone has experience in one or both of these subjects, feel free to leave your opinions and a quick summary if possibly

So: Accounting vs Bio vs P.E. ??

Thanks!

Hey,

I'm probably not much help since I'm a year 10 and only doing 1/2 bio atm, but there are some really helpful subject reviews to help you get the gist of the subjects you wanna do: https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=175611.0

From what I understand, EngLang is harder than English, however it does scale up; English is similar to what you would learn in 7-10, just at a higher standard. Therefore, if english has been your weakness in the past, sticking with EngLang might be a good option.

Also consider that if you do subjects you enjoy/find interesting, getting a good mark is going to be a lot easier. I assume you want to go to uni - if you haven't already, have a look at the courses you're interested in and see what pre-requisites they have, and base your choices off that.

Hope this helps at least a little bit :)

If you haven't been too interested in Biology from years 7 - 10, maybe consider Psychology which has similar aspects however contentwise it is simpler and touches on topics that are relatable to year 12 and VCE like stress which could be very relevant.

It's interesting that you say you've heard good things about bio. I personally, have only heard bad things about bio. If you haven't had much of an interest in bio I would recommend picking another subject that may be similar, such as psychology, HHD or PE

I suggest you stick to English language if you are not a English person. From my peers, if you are stronger in science or maths subjects, it's really good to do eng lan since it's more logic based. In comparison, English mainstream doesn't scale as well as eng lan and generally requires more writing.

Since you are doing methods 3/4 in year 11, I'm assuming that you are quite strong in maths, just out of curiosity, why didn't you choose spesh. Choosing spesh is quite advantageous if you are doing methods early.

as of accounting, pe or biology, they are scale relatively similar, so choose what interests you the most, do the subject you like!

Hope that helps

Thanks for your advice!

The real reason I didn't do spesh is because of limiting my VCE course and uni options. I would have most likely have done well du to my strong maths background but I feel like doing spesh would have added a lot of workload for me in year 12, and I wanted to have a broader VCE selection.

I was actually not planning on doing two maths in VCE during year 10 however I dropped physics 1/2 and picked up further, the best decision I have ever made :)

Personally I'd try to avoid giving scaling too much weight. Scaling doesn't "reward" or "punish" you for choosing certain subjects. In fact, scaling just negates how competitive a cohort is deemed. So if you "advantage" from a subject scaling up, it's only because you've already "disadvantaged" from a competitive cohort, and vice versa.
