How much did your VCE plan change?

Just for funsies — I was recently reminded of the fact that I did a very different set of subjects in 1/2 compared to 3/4.

I thought it’d be cool to drop our current subjects below along with what your plan for VCE originally looked like, to see how much has changed or what stayed the same.

I’ll start! In 1/2 I did 7 subjects (because I had an external 3/4):

1. English language
2. Methods
3. French
4. Legal studies
5. Business management
6. Psychology
7. Portuguese 3/4

In year 12 they turned into:

1. Eng Lang —> mainstream English
2. Methods
3. French —> Chinese
4. Legal —> Russian
5. Busman —> Global Politics
6. Psych

What was everybody else’s experience with subject selections like? Was there a lot of changes or does your current subjects look similar to how you envisioned them back in year 10/11?

In Year 11 I had: Chem, Physics, English, Methods, Spesh (back in my day this was general maths advanced aha), Psychology

I was going to drop spesh after year 11, but I ended up keeping it, and dropping psych instead. Massive regrets tbh, I should've kept psych aha :')

So many languages! How long have you been learning them all?

My subjects and plans stayed the same throughout VCE - I was pretty lucky!
Year 11: English, French, Methods, Chem, Bio & 3/4 Revolutions
Year 12: English, French, Methods, Chem, Bio

If I had my time again I'd probably do some more hums stuff and would have done a second 3/4 in year 11 if my school allowed it.

For my subject selections in year 10 I chose literature, further, psychology, history revolutions, music styles, and Chinese.

Revs got cancelled, music had a timetable clash, and I deadass found further and psych to be harder than methods and chem. So in the end I had lit, methods, chem, ancient history, global politics, and Chinese. Don’t have many regrets with my subject choices, except I wish I had done revs via DECV.

On a somewhat unrelated note, how do you juggle so many LOTEs? :o

Only really made one changes between year 11-12

Went from

Year 11: Chemistry, English, Methods, Specialist, Accounting + Biology 3/4
Year 12: MUEP Chemistry, Chemistry, English, Methods, Specialist

If I could do it again I would probably do most of the same subjects - pretty happy how it all went but I might possibly push one more 3/4 to year 11 and do English Language alongside English in Year 12.

I actually kept my year 10 subject selection form which said this:
   - Literature
   - Further maths
   - Biology
   - Psychology
   - Dance
   - Drama

I dropped drama in year 11 after realising I was losing a lot of potential pathways by not doing methods, and dropped psych for chem at the start of year 12.

If I could somehow rewind the clock, I would’ve also picked physics instead of bio.

So many languages! How long have you been learning them all?
Portuguese is my native language so I’ve been learning it my whole life (though I speak the Brazilian dialect). And I started learning both Russian and French in year 7, finally Chinese in year 9.

What humanities subjects would you have done? And revs looks very interesting, I kind of regret not doing it. Which two did you study?

It’s actually not that hard. I recycle my General Conversation script and you kind of use similar techniques in answering questions for all LOTEs so things carry over. It also helps that I already know the languages beforehand. It’s still far from a cruise though.

That's really cool!
Unsure - I think a few new hums subjects have been introduced or have changed since I graduated! I would have liked to do more history - ancient history sounds interesting. And classical studies is probably another one.

I did China and Russia in Revs!

Year 11: Chem, Bio, English, Methods, physics
Year 12: Chem, English, Methods, Food studies.

I really hated how physics was taught at my school so I ended up dropping it. I wish I did a language, but none was available at the time, so I am stuck teaching them to myself...

My original plan was to graduate two years early by doing:

Year 9: Latin, classics
Year 10: Greek, methods, chem, eng lang
Then gap year and uni.

What I didn’t account for was getting such a trash score for eng lang and not being eligible for the course I want even though my ATAR was enough. So next year I’ll do lit and spesh U3/4 to hopefully graduate.
2017: Classical Studies (41) | Latin (45)
2018: Classical Greek (39) | Chemistry (46) | Methods (47)
2019: UMEP Chemistry
2020: Literature, Specialist Maths

Year 11: 3/4 was Psych
1/2s were English, Methods, Spesh, Chem, and Bio. Dropped Bio for Accounting (probably one of biggest mistakes I've made tbh)

Year 12: Same subjects as above but with Acc instead of Bio

On the off hand I do VCE again instead of going to uni next year, I'd probably do Literature for compulsory Eng and Physics. PHYSICS would have been 1000% better than Chem or Bio or Accounting, jesus. Biggest regrets out, it seems like a free 40+. Would also pick up Computing/Algorithmics/Software Development

Yeah man, u really missed out on Algorithmics dude. It was probably the best subject I had this year (in line with economics). And since you are a genius at Mathematics you would easily ace algorithmics I reckon.

Are you starting Indo SL from scratch in Yr 12?
I learnt Indo in primary school through to year 10, dropped it this year cause I hated distance ed but am picking it up again for year 12

Going into VCE my plan was:
- outdoor ed (complete 1 year early)
- Japanese
- biology (complete 1 year early)
- chemistry
- methods
- literature

My 3&4 subjects were:
- eng lang
- methods
- bio
- chem
- physics
- psych

Except for eng lang,  the reason for the differences is timetable clashes
