PostGrad Med

Hi all,
I got my course offer for engineering/commerce at Monash but have changed my preferences putting biomed at the top at Melb.
Medicine is my number 1 priority but I’m truly scared of the likelihood of me getting into medicine. I wish to get in but I have heard that biomed is extremely hard and that basically everyone I know who has done or is doing it hated it. I have the option of doing a science double so I was wondering what should do. If you got confused at all to sum it all up, I would do biomed but I’m super scared of the difficulty and the chance of me getting into med, if I don’t get in idk what I could do with a biomed degree that I would be interested in doing. With a com/eng degree I have a load of options at the end but can’t get into medicine at Melb (that I prefer over Deakin) which is my dream. I would do science but I’m scared about failing to get in (like biomed) and science does not open up a lot of job opportunities. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I'd recommend against biomed. More info here: post links to other fora is against the forum rules

Basically take any course that you will graduate from with a degree as well as letting you apply to grad med (I think (?) you could do the GAMSAT and apply to some unis if you did comm/law.. not 100% sure on that though)

Thank you! The article was very insightful, I guess biomed is completely off my list now.

If you’re super into studying med, how about a BSci/Eng or BSci/Comm at Monash? This gives a kind of compromise. As far as I understand, you’ll need to study certain units to be eligible for postgrad med at Melbourne, which you can only take in science, biomed and some related health courses. (There’s been some other threads around here that discuss the units required, so please look around here and in the University boards for those.) With BComm/Eng, you won’t be able to fulfil the unit requirements for Melbourne postgrad med, as there’s no out-of-faculty elective space.

If you’re doing a double degree involving either science or biomed, I believe this also allows you to compete for Monash’s postgrad med courses too. This should increase your chances of studying med in the future. The other degree will also broaden or provide further direction as to where you can go in terms of career.m, if you’re not fond of a single science degree.

You should still accept your offer though and change your preferences accordingly, otherwise you’ll risk having nothing. You can always transfer or unenrol later on if need be.

I have not much else to add to the great advice above except
science does not open up a lot of job opportunities. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
This is the most important thing you should be thinking of. Neither does Biomedicine. A viable option is choosing a degree that will actually ensure you will be working after 3 years (such as pharmacy) even if you don't make it into medicine. Statistically <15% of Post Graduate applicants will make it in.

I'd recommend against biomed. More info here: post links to other fora is against the forum rules

For future students reading this thread, to find the link simply google 'common pitfalls for medicine'

Unfortunately AN's prioritisation of their business interests rather than the students who come to this site for advice means absurd rules such as banning of links to other specialised forums will remain and be enforced.
