Title: CAS Calculator
Post by: TJonny07 on November 12, 2018, 07:49:41 pm
Hi,

I'm going into Specialist 1/2 and Methods 1/2 next year and I was wondering about what AN thinks about the different CAS Calculators. This year I've used the Classpad 2, but the rest of my school uses TI-nspire and I was wondering if I should change now while I have the chance. Are there any particular advantages to either calculator? I'm happy to invest time getting to know a new one. Thanks!

If your school uses TI, then most likely your teachers will know how to use the TI but not necessarily the Casio. If you are comfortable working things out on your own, this might not be a problem. But if you want to make sure you can get advice from your teachers when you need it, that is a reason to get the TI.

I'd recommend changing, simply because you'll be able to get targeted help from your teachers. The Nspire is a good calculator, too.

Yeah, I heard that people using Ti-Inspire had a 15-20min time advantage compared to people using classpad on the final-so definitely consider switching

This is a very vague question. I have no idea what tips to give since I don't know what level of understanding you already have.

The textbook has some great sections on how to use your CAS, so I think that would be a good place to start.

Could you elaborate on what exactly you need help with? What CAS functions would you like to learn about?

Hey, I also recommend using Youtube, it's definitely helped me.
My current school uses the Casio Classpad so this guys channel is a real lifesaver. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu8eY5CG-NuLIz3xTMhBC-Q/videos

There are ample of tutorials on youtube no matter what calc you use, so you should be able to find something.

I need help with graphing mainly, this is because I did not do well on my most recent CAS calculator test.

Do you have an example? It might be easier to help you if there's a question to work with.

If you use the same CAS as the rest of your school, your teacher can give you specific tips about how to use it for the assessments you will be doing. It might be worth chatting to them about it.
