There is a rumour that employers tend to favour males in this field... is that true....?  :(

Edit: gramatical errors in the title.

I would say that as there are more male graduates of engineering, more of them are likely to be the 'top' students and so land the 'top' jobs. I would say that employers definitely don't favour female chemical engineers, but that isn't the same as saying that they favour male ones.

In Australia, employers are legally not permitted to discriminate candidates based on gender, orientation, race, etc.  If they do, and you have substantiated evidence to prove so, then you could sue they backsides off.  :)

I would say that rumour is false.

Firstly you cannot discriminate and if an employer turned you down for gender, then you could reach a very nice cash settlement with the company. Secondly there are huge initiatives being done to open the door for women to enter engineering, chemical engineering I know is a very popular engineering sector for women.

Employers are more likely to go after graduates from more prestigious universities and who achieved top marks, than their gender.

Yep. Quite a lot. Females make up about half (if not more) of chemical engineering in my year level.

If anything they are more likely to favour females. Most companies have gender quotas for professional positions that they aim to achieve. Given in many engineering courses males dominate the numbers, and companies will try for at least an equal split of males and females, it stands to reason that the females have far better odds.

gender quotas suck :(
employers should have the freedom to choose who they want as employees, if an applicant is good enough gender wont be an issue when selecting them

Chemical Engineering is actually the most female friendly engineering sector.
