Year 11 Entry 2018 For JMSS

Hello, I am a Year 10 MHS Student looking to move to JMSS Year 11 for 2018. What are the tests like, and what do I need to learn for which test? Perhaps some tips too. How many people usually try for entry in Year 11, and what are my chances?

I just feel like the school isn't right for me, the lessons are far from engaging and I feel like the staff aren't as approachable as they should be. The people there are pretty chill though. I don't know how to describe it, but basically the school feels really rigid with all it's traditions and I don't really feel comfortable. I know it's a prestigious school and all but I just feel as if every school day is really meh.

I think a school with a more modern way of teaching and principles (eg. dual class) is better for me and I feel it would benefit me despite the school not having the same amount of fame.

Hey RecklessWish,

I don't want to say too much but here's a little bit of info (correct 2015 when I did the test).
  • Most of the tests seem to be focusing on what teachers might call "potential" rather than "knowledge". More about mathematical reasoning and scientific thinking. They certainly do not expect you to know more than what's in a standard year 9 course.
  • The tests are relatively short, I think there were two on maths, two writing and one on science.
  • The writing ones are science related, e.g. write a prac report about this experiment or explain this scientific concept.
  • I think there were a few over a thousand entrants, and about 220 were accepted. However, more than this will get past the test and be invited for an interview.

Good luck and keep me updated!

Just realized you were going for year 11 entry. I think maybe 30 - 50 people joined this year, but I am not sure. I imagine the entrance tests will be similar though.

I see, of the 30-50, would you have any idea of how many people applied?

Thank you so much for the information about the test, will keep all that in mind. Interesting that the writing is science related, but I guess that's what the school is for.

Definitely not 50 people in year 11. I'd say it was around 25-30 considering the entire JMSS cohort has roughly 650 students (200 in year 10 + 225 in y11 and 12). From the fact you're from MHS I'd assume you've done many cocurricular activities and out-of-school comps? You're in a pretty good position if you want to apply.

Sorry I can't comment on the entrance exam because it's different each year and depends on your capabilities and strengths.

I'm not sure how many applied but this year about 30 (maybe 32?) new year 11s got in :) it depends on the amount of people that leave (our cohort had quite a few people leave early on in the year so more people than usual got in)

Hi RecklessWish,

To answer your question, you may want to take a look at the following resources and tips contributed by pi which from my perspective are very helpful to prepare you for getting an entry into JMSS.

Another great resource to get you to familiar with the structure, format and difficulty level of questions for any selective entry high school test in general is http://www.aameperth.com.au/selective-school-test where you can go for a free diagnosis assessment as well as plenty of practice questions in all areas to get you better prepared for JMSS admission test.

Best Luck!
