How important is ranking with high exam marks?

Hi everybody!

I was wondering how important rankings are for a subject such as further maths. I am aiming for high 40s/50.

Right now, I think I am in the top 5 of a strong cohort but I know I am not rank 1. My SAC scores are as follows:
Data Analysis - 95%
Finance and Recursion - 92%
Networks - 100%

I go to a very strong school, but I’m not 100% sure how our SACs will scale.

I am aiming for 100 on both exams and I think it’s pretty likely as long as I don’t make any stupid mistakes (my recent trial exams and practice exams I have been getting these scores or very close).

Is it possible for me to get a 50 (or high 40s) if I full mark both exams but am not rank 1? Anything above 47 I will be happy with

Can someone please answer this for Methods too? I'm in a similar position being top 3 in a strong school and scored 119/120 for our Trial Exam (though Heffernan is notoriously easy so it doesn't really count)

How important is the score of the number 1 ranked student? He scores around 112 - 115 so I'm not sure if I'll miss out on a high 40 / 50 due to circumstances outside of my control  .

Yeah, 50 would be possible still. In large/strong cohorts, it is not uncommon for students not rank 1 to score a 50 and/or get the highest study score. You still would want to be ranking in the top group though.

It isn't really the score of the specific student that is ranked 1 that is actually important. So, if someone is aiming for a 50 and they are rank 5 they want at least four other students + themselves to do very well on the exam. You would want them to be scoring an exam score equivalent to mid-high 40s to a 50. It actually doesn't really matter if those four other students are the ones ranked 1-4 or if they are just 4 other random students in the cohort. In the end, if you are ranked 5th you get the scaled sac equivalent of the 5th highest exam score in your cohort.
