Title: Its HSC baby :)
Post by: Nomsie on September 17, 2020, 05:54:37 pm
So, not sure if I'm doing this right but only have 2 prelim exams left !!! (very excited)
I will try and update the marks here (hoping they aren't atrocious) and would love for some of you guys to input here your own experiences.

Cannot believe that it is officially becoming the beginning of the end!

Just had a read through some others, which are much more detailed, so I too will add detail.

As inferred above I am currently in year 11, almost transitioning into year 12.

My subjects are currently:
1. Eng Adv
2. Eng Ext
3. Math Adv
4. Modern Hist
5. Society & Culture
6. CAFS (highkey regret choosing)
7. and SOR1 which is planning to be dropped as I pick up Hist Ext

I am quite excited about the possibilities of the coming year (yet also terrified as its the 'real deal' now).

I wanted to wish anyone whose reading this the best of luck in the future and in their HSC

oh, and my name isn't actually nomsie, it's Naomi :)

Okay so major update, just completed my second last exam, (eng ext which I have be sooo stressed about) and have CAFS on Monday.

The exam was okay but my thumb is still hurting from writing, and it also doesn't help that I did in fact not read the prescribed text we had to write a creative appropriation of :)
I mean to be fair, we were given a specific extract that we had to reimagine from a different perspective (which doesn't actually leave much room for expansion). But overall hope/think I did well.

I'll update the marks once I get them (that's saying if they're not totally bad)

Hey Naomi!

Welcome to the forums  ;D I'm so keen to read your journal! What are you most excited about with being a Year 12 student?

Not sure if I'm responding right, but definitely the content, I have a strong love for my subjects (excluding math, which is the only reason I'm doing 12 units so I have a buffer). I genuinely have a passion for learning so I'm excited to see my strengths. Also am school captain so definitely keen on what i can do for my school :)

Sooooo.... I'm currently contemplating whether or not to do hist ext or 4UENG but I'm steering more towards eng as the interests and pros are more towards it (and the hist ext course is starting to appear boring).

I'm going to do both and drop at the end of next term, so I have an idea of both :)

Quick Update!

So there are only 6 days of holidays and year 12 starts!!!
Honestly not sure how to feel, and I haven't been the most productive during these holidays (went beach yesterday but did read some of 1984!). I need to finish reading 1984, start reading the left hand of darkness, and I want to formulate two major work ideas for both eng ext and hist ext.

If anyone reading this has completed either extension course, pls respond and let me know how you thought of your idea, because I have no clue what I'm meant to steer my ideas towards as my teachers were very, very vague.

Hope everyone reading is enjoying their holidays :)

My teacher actually helped me choose my topic for my History Project (Nanking Massacre + national memory), which in hindsight was not the best idea since I became very disinterested and unmotivated in it EVEN THOUGH it was interesting towards the end. I regret not changing it up or just finding my own topic since it just felt like a chore and that I was forced to do it. Definitely choose something that truly fascinates you!!!

And yes, you will find that everything is kinda vague in History Extension; essay writing, the sources, the course content... there's only so much that your teachers can do for you. This is a good thing though! It means that you aren't limited at all for your History Project; you can write about so many different things!!! Take a look at the Constructing History - Key Questions syllabus and pick out the dot points that seem to jump out and interest you. If I were to choose my topic now, I would probably have chosen to centre it around forms of historical communication or changing philosophies of history (of course, you will inevitably address multiple syllabus dot points in your History Project, but you can focus on particular ones).

Also, good on you for starting on your prescribed texts! It's lovely to see such enthusiasm!

Good luck with your extension courses! Don't worry about being productive, enjoy the rest of your holidays.
I hope this helped,
Alice : D

Just saw this now, but thank you so much, I am not entirely sure I'm pursing hist ext as I may do 4 unit English but this definitely helps :)

Hiii Naomi!!

I'm Amal, also will be doing the HSC alongside you in 2021, and have a journal up on my profile. I'm very very keen to see how you fare throughout your HSC.

Personally, I'm doing 4-unit English as well, and I advocate for it because

a. scales super well
b. skills you use in english ext 2 are transferrable to the other extension courses

But yes! Will check up on you time to time to see how you go

That's so cool! ill definitely have a read of your journal :)
I'm also definitely keen for 4-unit eng, I feel like English is a passion of mine. Have you decided what form you wanted to do for your major yet?

Also, wish you the best of luck for this upcoming year :)

Soooooo I got prelims back (besides society and culture) and I guess I'm somewhat happy?
I know I could have done better if I continued to push my self and didn't slack off At the end (for some exams I read half my notes the night before and gave up, meaning I barely studied)

so with all transparency, here are my marks (ranks are only for exams not overall)...

Eng Adv: 73/80 (got 19/20 in every section beside my Othello question, dragging down my mark)
Rank: 1/~15

Eng Ext: 44/50 (actually quite proud of this mark and my improvement)
Rank: 1/~15

Adv Math: 44/60 (not to mad about this, definitely thought i was going to fail!)
Rank: 3rd?/~14

SOR1: 40/50 (definitely expected higher, so I'm slightly disappointed)
Rank: 1/~19

Modern History: 67/75 (not mad but once more felt I could do better, but definitely good for 3 essays in 2 hrs!)
Rank: 2/~22

CAFS: 69/80 (Disappointed but barely studied so I'm aware I can do better)
Rank: 1/~19

SAC: to be informed :)

Overall I'm both happy and disappointed but there is always room for improvement! :)

Congratulations, those are some fantastic results! As long as you pinpointed what you could have done better during your preparation, that's all that matters. Just keep on pushing for Year 12 !

I'm thinking of doing a critical (just a little more my style)
And thankyou so much!! I'm not entirely sure at the moment, I'm saying 95+ for my star but definitely want to aim for 98+ (just have to shoot high hahaha).

Uni/course wise I've been tossing about ALOT recently. since a young age medicine has been something I am passionate about but in more recent times definitely steering more towards law with politics. Also wanting to go USYD :) I was reading someone else's journal and found out about the future leader's scheme (which is great because I'm the school captain), so it definitely helps with pathways.

What about you? (ATAR and uni/career goals)

Agh the Future Leaders Scheme is amazing,, didn't make the cut to be a leader. I'm in a similar boat, aiming for that 98+, hoping to gain admission into Law/Arts at UNSW. I'd love to go to USYD, but really there is a slim chance I'd meet the requirements,, unless I received DUX by the off-chance. But I'd love to go to UNSW, seems lovely and I've heard great things, UTS would be my third choice :)

Ouu and critical sounds tricky,, I, myself am a little intimidated by creative writing because of its subjectivity and because there are just so many good writers out there...just impossible to compete with. Do you have a concept/idea in mind?

Oh damn the similarities we have!! And don't underestimate yourself, but either ways UNSW is a really good uni (just annoying they have the LAT test for Law). Either ways, USYD has programs that can give your extra marks, especially since your doing ext 2 eng, they have the thing where if you achieve a band 6 or E4 you can get 5 extra marks :)

You should definitely have a read around and look at early offer schemes, Goodluck girl!!

And for ext 2, I'm thinking of either analysing a single text (currently considering Lord of the Flies), or a study of social class and its representation throughout time, or a study of Charles Dickens :) what about you ?

Yes I will look around at entry pathways! Although for Law at USYD or UNSW they quite limited due to the competitive nature of the degree.

As for the major work, I haven't settled on a concrete idea but I was thinking conceptually I'd like to look at the limitations of language, how we often lack the words to express certain ideas and how silence often shapes meaning- The Lovers Discourse by Barthes kind of inspired this.

The other idea which I deem interesting is looking at traumatic repetition in memory and how that manifests in the white literary imagination- so Beloved by Toni Morrison would enrich my research for this.

With both ideas I know I can really play with form to make my ideas more prevalent but I haven't settled on anything specific bcoz both are quite broad and I need to settle on some sort 'structure' to take my story, or a plot...or characters.. lol
Just need to add more nuance to my ideas so they are somewhat authentic, a feat which I'm sure I can achieve with further research.

I'm excited but also quite intimidated and nervous to start, but will try hardest not to let self-doubt to fester.

OMG I'm so sorry, I responded but just realised that it didn't load and just resent your message!

I can't entirely remember what I said but your ideas are good, doing research into either gives you a wide scope to produce a really sophisticated text

Damn this past week has been a special one.

Since last Monday I haven't done any work, I just hit a slump and was kinda burnt out but now I'm energised and back into it. I definitely feel like content-wise, I'm going to slow and so is my class. I still need to catch up on all my missed work and tasks, so I once I catch up I'm gonna go over content for Modern, CAFS and really push to finish my assessments early to submit for feedback.

No update as of now (just completing assessments and trying to stay on top of study)

As you may know, I do CAFS as one of my subjects and need to complete an IRP, I would really appreciate it if you could fill out my quick survey on the influence of performance expectations during the HSC year on emotional and physical wellbeing, which we should all know quite a bit about ahahha

MARK UPDATE:

Got my year 11 grades and ranks but some arent 100% certain because they didn't provide us with an overall rank for some odd reason :)

Math ADV: B (ranked ~ 3rd)
Modern HIST: B (R ~ 3rd)
Eng ADV: A (R 1st)
Eng EXT: A (R 1st)
CAFS: A (R 1st)
SAC: A (R 1st)
SOR1: A (R ~1st OR 2st)

ASSESSMENT UPDATE:
MATH/HIST/SAC/CAFS all due this coming week 2/4 done. Math is almost done (doing it right now) and hist is an in-class source analysis.

Eng is due in about 2 weeks and i'll start next week

Eng Ext 1/2 are due next term :)

Instead of working on my PIP or IRP, I am providing an update.

SOOOOO.....

SAC: I think I did well in the presentation, but I tend to speak fast during presentations, especially since I'm naturally a fast speaker and I really struggle to slow it down :/

CAFS: I think I smashed it? It was a really easy proposal :)

MATH: It was due today and had a hand in and presentation element. Once more think I did well but my speed really takes away from my presentations (luckily it wasn't in the criteria so I won't get marked down)

MHIST: Wowwwwww, the questions were both oddly simple yet difficult? we had a bunch of source analysis within 45 mins (to replicate the HSC) and I really can't tell you how I went. My teacher is also very very picky on the way you write, where if you don't reference the Source in the first line you could get marked down? So yh not too sure about that...

ENG ADV: have yet to do it but it's a 7-8min vlog (so manyyyyy presentations) but I think it'll be okayy

Got one assessment back and let me just say, I am feeling very disheartened after that. I don't even agree with my mark but they took back the papers to photocopy them so I didn't have a chance to flick through the feedback. Just very annoyed right now and completely unmotivated and stressed

Happy New Year everyone!!!, lets hope that 2021 isn't as questionable as 2020...

Anyways, here is a little update :)

PIP
Nothing has been done (whoops)

EXT 2 MAJOR
- Only established a thesis (whoops)

EXT 1
- started the assessment, have my creative idea, currently doing some planning

ENG ADV
- Nothing.... But I am doing my notes today!

Modern Hist
- Full Core notes are done (FINISHED EVERYTHING WOOHOO)

CAFS
- IRP: Almost finished results, planning to finish this week

In terms of fun, these holidays have been very uneventful, the weather is just so bad and I've been really busy with my job :)

So, the beginning of the end has finally come and the long-awaited yet dreaded words are said 'school starts tomorrow'. I must admit I'm kinda scared of the fact this is my last year of schooling (yea there's UNI but I won't experience anything like school again).

Anywayssss, let's ignore all that scary stuff for a min and reflect on that atrociously long list which I gave myself when holidays began (don't be too disappointed by the results). I must say I did more relaxing than anticipated, but I feel it was necessary, after a 30+ working Christmas week and one day off within a 12-day span, I was exhausted. And also school is exhausting, but I feel rejuvenated and prepared to conquer the year :)

PIP
- I am very disappointed with how much I have done, I'm getting into contact with a marketer from a toy company so I've needed to wait for that, but I have just been putting it off
- Done a lot of research
- Scavenging for responses
- somewhat started the actual content

EXT 2 MAJOR
- Have done a lot of research
- idea is finalised including one text (trying very hard to find another)
- Viva voce is somewhat prepared for, have a little bit more i need to finalise by next Friday
- haven't written much but smashing some out this week

EXT 1
-  common module notes done
- haven't read LHOD (text), but i'll be doing that over the term
- haven't annotated all poems of Colridge have one and 1/2 of Rime of Ancient..... done, however, ROAM will be done by this week and the other two within the next two weeks
- assessment idea finalised and have started writing :)

ENG ADV[/b]
- Read 2ish of Mod C texts, almost done metamorphosis, completing Spotty Handed within the next two weeks
- common module notes done

Modern Hist
- Full Core notes done

CAFS
- IRP done
- notes done

Overall, didn't do as much as I hoped, but definitely content with it and feel I did enough to prepare me, after all, I didn't want to burn out before the school year even started :)

Until the next post,
Nomsie :)

It has been a while, I don't have much time as I'm memorising an English essay for an in-class response, but here is an update for my semester one marks! (Mainly for me to keep track of my progress)

TERM 4:

ENGA: 19/20 - = 1st
EE1: n/a
EE2: n/a
MHIST: 18/25 (3rd?)
MATHADV: 29/30 - = 1st
SAC: 19/20 - 1st
CAFS: 20/20 - 1st

TERM 1:

ENGA: 38/40 - 1st
EE1: 28/30 - 1st
EE2: 25/30 - 1st (there are only 2 students)
MHIST: 40/40 - = 1st
MATHADV: 21/30 - somehow still 1st?
SAC: 40/40 - 1st
CAFS: 17/20 - 1st

I must say for the most part I am very, very happy with my term 1 results, hoping I can maintain these marks!!

Wow!

It has been a while, I don't have much time as I'm memorising an English essay for an in-class response

Some ways that used to help me memorise English essays were:

- Recording myself saying the essay, then listening to it every time I would want to listen to music :)
o I did this in three seperate ways (1. the whole essay read through, 2. each theme/ idea/ topic, introduction and conclusion seperately 3. Each theme/ idea/ topic in half)

- Writing out flashcards, then little prompts (like the first 3 words of the paragraph/ each sentence) and review these daily (every few hours if possible)

- Using the Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve (Spaced Repetition) to my advantage

- Having a condensed set of notes with the bare things that I could be able to adapt (ie. quotes, techniques, malleable effect/ meaning --> depends on the question, audience impact)

Goodluck with the Trials coming up soon :D

I am one happy yr 12 student, although this is not how I envisioned my last term of schooling, I cannot complain that..

1) Trials got pushed two weeks (let's just say my study is not as effective as it should be)
2) THE PIP GOT PUSHED TWO WEEKS!!!!!! it was meant to be due a day after my birthday, so I am definitely happy (excluding the fact that I'm celebrating in lockdown :'()

I shall update in a bit, for now I need to do my mod B notes on Eliot :P

Also, Term 2 Mark update :)

Eng adv: 24/25 - = 1st
Eng Ext 1: 23/25 (There's technically 2 people in the course so I'm 1st, but its an online course, so including other schools I'm 2nd)
Eng Ext 2:33/40 - 1st (not the best, but I'm content ;D)
Math Adv: 25/25 - =1st (mini test + hand in task)
Society & Culture: 39/40 - 1st
Modern Hist: 39/40 - 1st
Community and Fam Studies: 23/25 - 1st

Very proud of last terms results :)

Myself and those in my cohort (which I'm sure many year 12s can relate to) are really concerned with the new information from Gladys. To send ~ 70,000 students to school, catching public transport, and teachers coming from across local gov areas is unsafe and completely ridiculous to send us back. I want to go back, but I don't want to risk my health and that of my family. It feels our HSC and exams are more important than the students, and it feels we aren't being heard. The fact they plan for trials to be the day we go back is so inconsiderate and ridiculous. We lost so much valuable education and for them to just throw trials on us is really concerning. Shoving a lot of children in a room? Putting added stress which is already a lot to handle? putting our health at risk?

I think my school (and others) should cancel trials and year 12 should stay home, because community transmission is at its highest, yet they want to send us back...

Sorry, just had to rant.

Have been busy with online exams and studying, but alas, MY MAJOR WORKS ARE DONE.

I submitted English ext 2 and it was so rewarding to see the culmination of months of hard work. Also, my PIP which I submitted about ~ 2 weeks ago.

It's crazy reflecting on the end of year 11 where I didn't even know if I wanted to do EE2, and now it's all done!!

I don't know how I feel about the HSC... I just got back all my trial marks besides modern and some weren't as good as I hoped. A lot of it is attributed to my lack of study but I'm just starting to not care and this is just another knockdown, its so hard just studying at home during lockdown, everything changing, getting shit marks, and still be expected to be perfectly fine with it all?

I've had exams since year 8, and my trial marks for ext eng 1, cafs and math are some of the worst I've had.

I know ultimately HSC is 50% and etc but it's still hard to want to do any study.

the HSC has begun...

I will give a full rundown about each exam after English ext on the 30th of Nov, so far they haven't been too bad.

Eng paper 1 was overall really good, the essay question was nice but the short answers were a little odd.

Eng paper 2, I really enjoyed mod b and c (i wrote a similar piece to a practice response I did the week before), Mod a was definitely a shock but I managed to cater and adapt my quotes/themes to the question.

MODERN HISTORY WAS A JOKE --> the questions for section 1 were so odd, the only thing that saved me was the fact I memorised a phrase for the treaties, otherwise, I wouldn't have known them. For those doing mhist, remember

Very: Versailles
Stinky: Sevres
Nibblers: Nuvelly (however you spell it)
Suck: Saint Germain
Toes: Trianon

Also, the essay question was out of the blue, I never expected them to be so specific yet have barely any scope for discussion, I completely denied the statement for the cold war, and proved it by discussing everything else (still technically answering the question).

Anyways, I now need to study for math on Monday!

Update!

Finished 3 exams last week and in 8 days at 4pm I would have finished my last ever HSC exam!

Math Adv: A horrible paper, i left like 17 mins early because i could not, for the life of me, get past what I had already done. The exam was horrid and 10x harder than last year. I would say i am disappointed but knowing i did 12 units and ranked 1st internally for math, i feel okay even if i did terrible... ahahah :'(

Society and Culture: Reallllllllly good exam! The multiple choice was a little wordy, as per usual, but I am really happy with the quality of my responses, i think i will be getting in the 90s for that exam/PIP :)

Community and Fam Studies: VERYYYYYY easy exam, I finished 20 multiple choices in 5 or so minutes, and finished the exam an hour early (answering everything and doing 5 and 1/2 pages for the 15 marker). The general consensus was that it was easy, the final person left 40 minutes early... I feel I should be getting a band 6, hoping that my short answer responses were good.

Now I am preparing for english ext and have written up a plan, I am going out twice this week and have a dentist appointment tomorrow but I think it is very healthy to have some personal time during this week. So keen!

Also, in like May I booked the dentist for nov assuming I finished my HSC as per the normal times and it would not interfere, and now it is in the middle of it, life works in very odd ways.

And like that, I have come full circle and finished with my last exam being english ext.

Goals during this break between now and uni:

1) work more and save
2) catch up on reading I've wanted to do
3) pay more attention to my health
4) find a hobby!

With that, I need to write my grad speech for this Friday  ;)
