So uhm, I've obtained an answer to this from a number of people already. But it'd be reassuring to confirm my thoughts with more people.

Say the english ranking for my school is like:
me: 100% 100% (1st)
friend *not to mention who.. hrm*: 99% 99% (2nd)

If he pwns the exam hard, i.e. gets higher than me, does that mean I take his exam mark as my SAC mark?

This could be a win/win situation for me.

"In School B, student x has the highest coursework score (71) and the second highest external score (78). After moderation he/she stays at the top with a moderated score equal to the school's highest external score (79)."

I win

Basically your SAC ranking never changes. Regardless of how you do on the exam. If you're ranked 1st, you will obtain the highest external mark as your SAC mark.

For example, if you're ranked 1st for english, but bomb out in the exam, and someone else gets 85% for english (which is the highest mark in your subject group) then you get 85% as your SAC mark.

That depends on what's the highest external mark for english.  :)

Yep. Like I'm stealing Mustafa's exam score right now. So yeah, all is well that ends well.

I'm not sure if that VCAA moderation system actually works as simply as that. I've heard of people getting 50s and not being ranked first.

Why wouldn't that be possible? It's possible under the system stated.

would this follow on, say 2nd rank gets 2nd highest (if its higher than their own) etc etc
