How to improve handwriting in holidays

Hey guys,

My Economics 1 2 teacher has made comments on how my handwriting is really bad and I am worried that it could negatively impact my study score.

How can I improve my handwriting over the holidays in order to make it legible? I have no issues with speed, I just have really messy handwriting.

I also have awful handwriting. I was advised to literally buy a handwriting book, like you do in primary school type ones, and use it. I didn't, but I know someone who had handwriting probably worse than me who really improved by doing so. Also, think about why it's so bad - formation of certain letters? Don't leave spaces? Don't lift pen high enough? Smudge it? Etc.

I have pretty bad handwriting as well, but it is readable. My advice on how to improve it is maybe slow down a bit, make your handwriting bigger, make sure your letters and words are not too close to each other.

I've found that for me, writing big has been the biggest factor in making my handwriting more legible, as well as finding specific quirks you have and fixing them (eg. my 4s looked like 9s, which lost me a lot of marks in math).

There's also a really good ATARNotes article on this which I found helpful:

Hope this helps!

Great tips above. To add -- three tips for writing both fast and well are:

  • Try find the most optimal size of handwriting for you. In my case, my handwriting was too small and was what made is illegible. As one of the comments above rightfully suggests, you need to focus specifically on what is wrong with your handwriting, and fixing the size of your handwriting can often help (attempt to write smaller and larger)
  • Try to handwrite notes and do practice exams/SACs on paper, not typed -- resist the urge to do your practice work digitally as a simple lack of handwriting is the reason why many cannot write fast or well
  • Tie a battery to the end of your pen/pencil. I know this sounds a little absurd but it attempts to strengthen the muscles that you write with (I had to check this article to make sure I wasn't remembering things wrong: https://www.smh.com.au/education/the-pens-no-longer-mightier-but-still-important-20111113-1ndwj.html) and it means that you will be able to recplicate legible handwriting under very strict timed conditions.

The fact that you've touched on this point is very strong as poor handwriting (either ineligible or not fast enough), so if this is an issue for you please continue to work hard to improve it, as it will cost you dearly in content heavy subjects such as English. All the best!
