Oral Presentation Help/Advice

Hi everyone! My schools starting to do oral presentations now (as its the easiest thing to do on the school holidays)
I've chosen my topic out of a few suggested ones, and I've done my research and almost formed a contention, but I'm just curious to see what you all think about the issue, and your opinions! (Resources were a bit hard to find)

Anywayyyyyy the topic (related to the recent bushfire crisis)

Should the Australian government mandate the speed and amount of donated funds charities are required to supply to their advertised causes?

I'm pretty sure the prompt means that the government should have control over the funds that charities receive, and essentially distribute the funds out on their basis. As an example, during the bushfire season, the Red Cross was found to be making claims that they'll use donations for 'administrative costs', save money for later (hence them earning interest). These are not what people initally donated towards. People don't now what their donations are actually being used for. Hence, the Government getting involved may be an idea, to prevent all this happening.

:D Any opinions/ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Also, is using The Government as my target audience too broad??
Because I'm essentially trying to telll them that they need to get involved with the charities donations.

Need Help!!!

THANK YOU so much  :D

The government is an ok audience. However, you could also include the general public being a part of your audience since legislation is more likely going to be changed from public pressure.

This isn't a "simple" issue - which is good but you would need to make sure you understand all the aspects of it. E.g. Why the government is not involved? Is there anything impeding the government getting involved? Why won't the red cross want the government involved? Personal interests of the red cross? In previous crisis how have they responded? etc

Thanks so much for your help Sine  :D

I tried to do more research.....but this topic is too complicated in the sense that I don't want to accidently leave something out - I decided to change it to something more straightfoward so I can get the best possible mark that I can.

I changed it to Should volunteer firefighters receive payment?
And I just wanted to make sure, is a target audience like the associations that should be paying the firefighters specific enough? Or should it be something different? (I will of course do more research and find out exactly how these firefighters would be paid if they were meant too.

Thanks  ;D

Hey ArtyDreams,

This is a really good topic to look at as there was a lot of talk in the media about this during the Black Summer fires.
From the perspective of a volunteer first responder (often working with fireys) is that most of them are there to give back to their community and although money is great I can say with confidence many don't want to be paid to ve a firefighter. You could consider delving into the idea of businesses paying firefighters if they are deployed. Here's an example:

Volunteer firefighter works at a local recreation centre. S/He as a family to provide for but has been asked if s/he wants to be deployed. Naturally being the community-minded person they agree. Their workplace is understanding and says don't stress about your shifts we will cover them and sort them out for you. So far so good.
They are deployed for 2 weeks, it's been ok. They have the savings to provide for their family, they miss everyone but this is what they signed up for and they have a sense of great pride in what they are doing.
They get called out on another deployment, naturally, they go, the fires are getting worse and they don't know how long they could be deployed for. Money is an issue in the back of their mind slowly getting closer and they are starting to worry, they are unable to focus completely on their tasks a firefighter due to the stress of money, this makes their judgement 'foggy' and is unsafe not only for them but their coworkers.

The question is what should the business the firefighter works for be doing to support them? Given the unpredictable and strenuous nature of their job as a firefighter, should they get paid as they would for paid leave?

Let me know if you want any pointers or clarification on anything, although I specialise in Road Crash Rescue and Natural Disaster Rescue (flood, storm, earthquake, tsunami, landslide) I know a few friends who are firefighters who were deployed to the NSW and East Gippsland Fires. EMV and CFA are great places (esp their live broadcasts) are a good place to get expert opinion :)
