But if someone's work disappeared because of them (the instructions on the cover were followed, it is still a pen), wouldn't they have to assume full marks for that particular essay?

Awesome.

lol. but no, they'd focus on what they already read and if it was crap then they're not going to give you 10/10. then they'll probably go look at your GAT and since no one tries to do well in the GAT - you wouldn't be looking at a good score.

That's ridiculous!

I'm pretty sure VCAA knows everyone treats the GAT like a joke and know that it's not indicative of anything.

If it is VCAA's fault they erase a piece they can't use other pieces to derive a score - simply because there is a reason why you have three different essays...you may be best at context, worst at LA. What if your context piece gets rubbed out which would have got 10/10 but your LA got 6/10...are you telling me the 'rubbed out' context gets 6/10? If so...what a piece of shit system.

lol i just searched up this pen and on the website (http://www.pilotpen.com.au/page.aspx?A=6982) it says:

Caution

    * Do not use the Frixion products when signing legal documents or cheques or for exams and other important writing.

the pen maker doesnt want you to use it in the exam, if that means anything

Well... how is it the VCAA's fault if students don't take the GAT seriously.
VCAA Says: "The GAT is used to give you a derived score, so take it seriously"
Student says: "LOL i'm gonna bum the gat and write about rebecca black because im a rebel"

Does there really need to be debate about erasable pens?
Surely no one here is that confident in their abilities, that now they only have to worry about the pen they use.
If the pen has a chance of rubbing out from heat, then do not use it

aha nar I agree of course - why on earth would you use a 'risky' pen?
just saying that it's unfair on the student because technically it is still a pen (quote Rohitpi) and you don't expect your essay to be exposed to 'excess' heat such that the essay disappears.

I know what you are saying, but if VCAA did it your way (the nice way)
people would exploit it

it's not ridiculous at all. like nacho said, VCAA takes it seriously, they don't care if you treat it like nothing. the GAT is important for school ranking (how do you think they're able to ensure that all SACs are marked the same? the 1 test that all students do in all schools is the GAT) and also if you have something horrible happen at the end of the year and you can't perform as well as you should. they don't make you do the GAT for no reason, it's just that teachers don't really emphasise it enough.

Um I'm not talking about DES due to a student's illness or inability to perform well - I'm talking about VCAA being the one who makes the error by losing a student's piece....

Frankly idc because no one is going to use an erasable pen but if it did happened it's unfair to utilise the GAT for an error made by VCAA and students expect their work to be marked and that's why they don't care about the GAT.

It is perfectly fair to utilize the GAT in that situation. If the VCAA loses your essay then it's unfair on the other 44,000 students for you to get full marks. You are clearly told what to do on the GAT and it doesn't involve leaving after 30 minutes.

Ummm...Well i was pointing out the reasons why VCAA will not take into consideration your lack of interest in the GAT because 'you treat it like a joke'. Apart from your SACs, the GAT is the only backup you have as proof as to what kind of student you are.

I thought exams were photocopied... who cares if it fades when an examiner ruins it.

Also, why bother? You would spent too much time rubbing out... cross it out and move on =/

PS.
The gat is a joke... what a waste of my time.
I am good at Chemistry, Physics and Maths, not writing about wolves in 30 minutes...
I can study material and produce feedback, I can't talk shit for 30 minutes about a topic that goes nowhere... Come to think about it, I don't feel English as a whole serves any purpose anyway... /rage

Only in some subjects. Pretty sure English isn't one of them.

How is the GAT indicative of one's ability in a particular subject area? I got like 30's in Science/Tech on last year's GAT and got a 48 Study Score in Software Development...LOL!
