Interview tips from Med Students

Hi everyone, this post was made on behalf of a group of med students who have finished their first year. Recently we were talking about how it was for us this time last year, with interview offers coming out, so we thought we would make a quick post of how we prepared.

*Just as a disclaimer, this info was compiled by a bunch of bored med students during their holidays, so please do not take it as gospel.

1. Choose a partner to practice with. Practising for interviews in a group can be distracting, however, with a partner, it means that you don't have to compromise on peer review and feedback.

2. Chat with people in the health profession for advice.

3. Get a tutor for a few sessions for some expert one-on-one help.

4. Use youtube, but be careful. Youtube videos are a great resource, however, a lot of them focus on the systems of other countries like the US or UK. So be careful with the information given by videos, not from ANZ. Below are a couple of links that we think are pretty good:

a. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzmpPn4sMW0&t=20s
b. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1UeH5rxTUM&t=1s
c. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWkpp3QsEDU&t=315s
d. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOVbDD9lNjE

5. When practising alone record yourself on a smartphone instead of in front of a mirror. This way you can critique yourself more accurately.

Thanks for this! :)

Would encourage any other med students to add their tips here as well, which means I probably should at some point too but will let others spread their wisdom first!
