Prag's Journey to Com/Law!!

Hiya! Name’s Prag. I’m just a puny year 10 but I’m doing my very first 3/4 this year, so I thought - why not start a journal?? I must say, I'm having an absolute blast reading everyone else's!

This year I am doing my very first VCE subject, which is Psychology 3 and 4. My goal is to get a 40 (very generic, yes). My entire VCE plan is:

Year 10 - psychology
Year 11 - legal studies, accounting
Year 12 - methods, English, philosophy

I also really want to do economics, which isn't offered at my school, but I might go through distance ed. Also I haven't fully decided on doing accounting yet - I'll see how transition goes as business management seems rather interesting too!

My long term goal is to become a lawyer! After reading through all the VCE journals, I was surprised to see that there aren’t any law hopefuls, so I'm here to give y'all aspiring lawyers some representation!

I did two rounds of work experience this year, 2 weeks at a business consultants firm, another 2 weeks at the magistrates courts. Next year, I’ll be working part time at the business consultants firm in addition to my studies! I am also hoping to do year 12 part time so that I can get some more PROPER work experience under my belt before uni. In the future, I want to work in business/corporate law.

While I’ve been told it’s too early for me to think about VTAC, I do like to toy with my potential preferences from time to time. At the moment, I am bouncing between BCom/LLB (Monash) and BCom/JD (Melbourne).

Okay so I'm gonna head off now to do a psych practice exam but I can't wait to get some updates going! Stayed tuned, there's more stuff coming!

To sign off, here's a photo of a kitten ;)

Hi Snow Leopard! Nice to meet you :)))

I guess it will depend on the subject! Psych is reaaally content heavy in comparison to my year 10 subjects so it's quite hard, and it's also really competitive especially among the higher achievers. But I'm glad I'm doing one in year 10 to give myself early exposure to VCE, and it's also a nice change from the really boring core subjects I'm doing for school!

Hello Prag, nice to see an aspiring lawyer on AN. I’m thinking of doing JD at Melbourne in the future as a potential pathway too. What made you become interested in law?

Really keen to read your journal. Good luck for your 3/4 this year and for your future studies :)

Thank you Snow Leopard! I'm aiming for a 40 raw, though ideally 43+ hehehe (fingers crossed!)

Are you in year 10 too? What subjects are you doing for next year? :D

Hi Remy! It's amazing to find another aspiring JD'er! What kind of law are you thinking of pursuing?

Not gonna lie, I first became interested in law after watching the movie Legally Blonde! And it just stuck with me and while I've given other fields some thought they just don't seem as interesting. And then I realised that I also really like commerce and business (because who doesn't like money?) and thus the goal of becoming a corporate lawyer was born!

I know I have quite an idealised and probably v inaccurate image of how being a lawyer works in my mind, that's why I'm doing all these work experience, so that I can get a sense of what it's actually like away from hollywood's imagination!

I love love LOVE reading your journal btw! Good luck for your upcoming exams!

Yeah, I am in Yr 10.
Next year I'll be doing: Methods, Chem, Bio, a LOTE 3/4, a LOTE 1/2, R.E and Literature.
What made you decide to do English over the other Englishes?

Woah, two science and two languages! That's a heavy workload! How do you feel about that?
What is RE? And which two languages are you doing?

I picked English because it seems like the most applicable out of the 3. I'm not too interested in the "science" of languages, and while literature is interesting there doesn't seem to be a focus on the here and now. English also looks at modern issues and I'm a big fan of oral presentations, which is why I chose it!

I've always been keen on doing 2 science subjects, and I enjoy learning languages, so although it'll be a heavy workload, I'll hopefully enjoy it.

R.E is Religion and Society, sos I probs should've made that clear.
Also, in regards to the languages, I'd rather not say which ones I'm doing

How's life?
Do you currently have headstart/early commencement/orientation for your VCE subjects?

Thank you Snow Leopard for bumping this journal! Apologies I didn't respond sooner.

Results came out on five days ago and I felt so utterly destroyed by my derived score of 35 in psychology. Truly I believe that if I had been able to sit the exam, I could've gotten 40+. This is an awful start to my VCE journey. I tried so hard all year and it was all for nothing.

So, my plan is now to start back at square one and do six more subjects. I am actually doing eight subjects next year, my unit 3/4s being:
   - Accounting
   - Legal studies
   - Economics
And my unit 1/2s are:
   - Business management
   - English
   - Methods
   - Sociology
   - Australian and global politics

I am doing eight subjects because two of my 3/4s are through VSV but I don't want to leave two of my timetable slots at school blank. And the timetabling staff were okay with it.

My goal is 42+ in econ and accounting and 45+ in legal studies next year.

Omgggg I swear to god I'm so bad at responding hahah but new year new me! I'm going to be much more active this year now that I'm fully emerged in VCE.
I'm feeling really nervous for my 3/4s because last year I only had one and I did so much worse than I thought I would, even though I thought I put in a lot of effort. This year at least I know relatively how much more time and effort is needed and how my study habits need to change, but the sheer amount of work that's needed kind of scares me!

---

Hey everyone! Since the new year is officially underway I plan to be much more active on AN this year and especially with keeping up this journal! So I guess I'll start with an official introduction in this post to welcome 2020 (4 days late but idc).

About Moi
Hi there! Name's Prag. I'm 16 and going into year 11 this year at a public school in Melton, Melbourne's west. Academically, the school is at the far bottom of the pecking order, but we do get great VCE results once in a while. I'm a Christian.

The Past
I started VCE in year 9 (2018) with Psychology 1/2. Naturally, last year I followed with 3/4. I loved psych and worked so hard all year with the goal of a raw >40 study score. I thought a 40 was easy. But then I had to miss the exam due to a family emergency. I applied for a derived score, and got a disappointing 35.

What scares me isn’t getting a much lower than expected score. It’s this: after comparing my trial exam scores to what others got this year, I realised that  a 35 isn’t too far off. While I had first assumed it wasn’t fair that I had to derive my score, I now realise I had been overconfident and the amount of effort I put in last year is nowhere near enough.

The Present
This year I am doing 8 VCE subjects (yes, eight): Legal, Economics, and Accounting 3/4; and English, Methods, Busman, Politics, and Sociology 1/2. I'm doing two through distance education as my school does not offer them.

In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a humanities person through and through.

My goal is to get >42 in accounting and eco, and >45 in legal. It might not happen, but I want to aim high, and I think I stand a better chance now that I know how difficult getting a 40 actually is.

The Future
Next year I plan to do English, Methods, and Business Management 3/4. As I'll only have 3 subjects, that means I would be studying part time, giving me opportunity to also work on the side - and I don't just mean 3hr shifts at Maccas after school.

Last year, I did 2 weeks of work experience at a business consultant firm, and at the end, the manager told me to come back after I’m done with VCE to work part time. I’m not sure whether I truly left a good impression, or if it’s just courtesy, but I’m treating it as the former. Even if I don’t eventually work there, I’m sure I can find work elsewhere — I just hope it’s relevant as I don’t want to slave away in retail or hospitality.

There are two reasons as to why I want to work in year 12 — one, I struggle a bit academically so I’ll need plenty of work experience to stand out. Two, I come from a single-parent family that’s not exactly what you’d call financially well off, and I’m the oldest, so I must do all I can to help out even if it’s not much.

After high school, my goal is to study either BCom/LLB at Monash or BCom/JD at Melbourne.

Beyond VCE
Aside from academics, my main things are debating and athletics. I’ve been doing public speaking since primary school, it’s one of the few things I’m really confident in. Athletics is the other. I used to always sleep past my alarm and miss the bus, meaning I had to run to school everyday and all that running made me more fit than a gym membership ever will. I do both sprinting and cross country — my worst event at athletics carnivals is the 800m, because it’s such an *awkward* distance - too short to jog but too long to sprint.

This year I’ll be taking on the roles of house debating captain and school sport captain. I’m also leading our school’s TedEd club, which I co-founded last year with a student who had since graduated. Additionally I’m working to form a Model UN club at school. I’ve already talked it out with a couple of interested students and teachers and I believe it can start running maybe by the end of term 1.

I hope to document my full VCE journey in this thread, starting from today, until December 2021 when I (hopefully) receive my VTAC offer. It sounds like a long way away but this last year went by so quickly so I've no doubt these two years will rush by too. I'd also love to meet any other aspiring lawyers and maybe offer some of my own insights from the perspective of a current VCE student. Most importantly I aim to update regularly and actually respond on time to people who take time out of their day to reply.

I'll wrap it up for now here, see you all soon!
