Commerce at Melbourne vs at Monash

Anyone have any advice on whether I should do commerce at Melbourne or Monash? I can get into both and I'm just tossing up between which one should be first on my VTAC preferences.

I live extremely close to Monash (5 minutes away) and if I go there, I have the benefit of being able to walk to my classes and not having to spend an hour and 15 roughly on public transport, which I would if I went to Melbourne. On the other hand, Melbourne, they say, is better for commerce and ranks better internationally. I don't know whether Melbourne graduates get more/better job opportunities than Monash graduates but some say they do.

Anyone have any advice on what I should do? Is Melbourne really better than Monash for commerce? What about for other things such as the vibe of the universities and the lifestyles they offer?

Any help appreciated  :)

In terms of which uni is better, id say they're pretty even in regards to commerce and besides, uni rankings aren't looked at when applying for jobs (unless you're doing law). Honestly, I'd go with Monash since it's very close to you. It's a great uni with an excellent reputation

Prestige is mostly irrelevant, especially when comparing two highly regarded universities. I would pick Monash since it would be far more convenient for you to study there. There will not be meaningful differences in regards to employment prospects between the two universities.

I'd still give a lot of thought to Melbourne. If you are the exact same candidate with the same development opportunities and the only difference is the university that you attended, I'd agree that the prestige difference is not very significant.

However, there are exclusive UoM development and growth programs that Monash does not offer, one specific one that made an enormous difference to me was the International Case Competition program. You go through 8-12 weeks of rigorous training after being selected through the summer holidays and you have the opportunity to work with some of the most intelligent and driven peers you'll ever meet. There are many more that you can read about on the UniMelb website.

Participating in the program was the biggest reason driving a lot of the internship/job interviews that I was able to secure in 2017 and would honestly say it's made a very tangible difference to my graduate salary (if this is a factor that matters).

That being said, if you're a top student, you'll excel anywhere. There are many, many phenomenal students from Monash and they definitely do end up in some of the most highly regarded graduate positions.

Thank you for your advice, that was super helpful. I did just have another question - do you think if I went to Monash I'd have an equal opportunity to get a job at the big 4 accounting firms (for example) as a graduate from Melbourne or do you think the prestige part of Melbourne uni will play into it? As well as that, do Monash and Melbourne offer similar internship and overseas placement opportunities?

Melbourne has more prestige attached to it (definitely in commerce). Monash is still a very good option and the difference is by no means night and day but that's what the question is for you.

Three years ago, I was in a similar position. Monash is definitely closer to me but I chose Melbourne in spite of the hour long commute. I don't regret the option one bit. As others have said, the difference between the universities as a job candidate will be marginal. As a biased UoM student, I'd like to think it's tipped in the favour of Melb but in reality employers will care a lot more about your WAM and your experiences than which of the 2 best universities in the state (and arguably the country) you went to.

Consider that if you end up landing a job in Commerce you'll almost definitely be working in the city. They both offer similar networking opportunities but remember that's also a significant part of the degree.

Re: which will help you land a big 4 acc. job: it'll barely make a difference. A clearly superior candidate from Monash will not lose out to someone inferior from Melbourne, all else equal.

It's all about what you do at University that matters when comparing the two universities.

Melbourne simply offers more development opportunities and thus if you make the most of it you'll be better positioned to get the jobs you want.

Big 4s aren't super high on the hierarchy of desirable jobs either, it's for the top 20% of students but probably not the top 5%

Thank you for your response, super helpful! Can I also ask what made you ultimately pick UoM over Monash?

In regards to this,  my mum studied accounting at  vic uni and got a job at PwC straight out of uni.    So I doubt university prestige had much to do with that
