Dr He's Math Tutoring

Hi,
I was casually strolling around the forum today and saw "Dr He's Math Tutoring". Apparently his students had SS of 46+ and he was based in Box hill but there was no trace of him on Google.

Anyone know what happened to him?

Hey there  :)

I believe that he's on Ellingworth Parade near Box Hill train station. Don't quote me though  :P

Have to add that his picks his students- I think they need a Distinction in AMC or 50% on his entrance test, although I'm not too sure. So, whilst the SS 46+ are very impressive, some has to be attributed to their maths ability in the first place, before going to Dr He's Math Tutoring!

Hey! AFAIK Dr. He mainly gets his students by word of mouth or referrals (typically in Asian circles, perhaps unfortunately).
Yes, he is based in Box Hill and you can find his information on the bettereducation website. (Or you can PM me).

In regards to his teaching style, I found it alright. He mainly teaches lessons while students take notes, and lessons conclude with a short-test of around 12 minutes. You get your test marked and returned each week, and you get rankings within the class based on that and end-of-term tests. Some people object to his avoidance of calculators (e.g. Hamo94), but my personal opinion is that this doesn't matter. In Dr. He's own words, "you don't pay someone to teach you how to use your TV remote control, so why would you pay people to teach you to use the calculator?", i.e. he regards that as students' own responsibility. I didn't mind it, and I don't think the majority of his students did.

One particularly refreshing thing about Dr. He is that he is probably one of the most genial and helpful tutors around, he is always available after classes (esp. if they are the last one in the day) to help with questions, advice (and even with UMEP Maths haha)

In regards to performance, yes, his classes are very high performing. In my personal opinion, this is probably due to his selection strategy (you need to have specific AMC results OR pass his own test, based on AMC questions) rather than exceptional teaching. But you do get to be in a very high-performing environment, which is the main reason I went in the first place :)

Wow zsteve's reply is definitely on point!  :P

He'll definitely be able to provide more info that I did. Plus, I only wrote my reply based on what I've heard!

All the best, let us know how it goes  ;D

Im just curious of Dr He for his Spesh 3/4 Tutoring, but his rate is $75/hr and I don't think I would be able to financially be able to cope with that amount. But i'm gonna try and keep my options open.

So how would I been able to apply for the entrance exams? (I'm just curious about the sittting entrance exam at the moment and not getting in, 3/4 is still relatively far off)

So do you guys have any idea when he starts accepting applications?

Afaik the class fees weren't $75/hr, it was more like $25/hr for a class setting. Granted, the last time I attended was a few years ago so maybe someone can further clarify the pricing structure.

I'd probably just sit the AMC or something (it's coming up this year), you only need a Credit/Distinction to get in (it used to be prize).
I think you can sit the entrance exam whenever you want, just arrange a time with him personally :)

You might like to know that Dr. He charges iirc $360/term which is quite lightweight (compared to some *other* (cough cough) tuition classes out there). Also, AFAIK he has two intakes per year, one at the beginning and one midyear.
You are, of course, allowed to attempt again if you fail the exam ;)

Umm...
What exam does he make students do? The AMC?
How do you take the exam...or do you have to do it in class and if you fail, you can't enter the class?

Ahhhh DHMC.... good mems XD
Yeah he's great, highly tech free focused though, but I definitely found it useful :)
I didn't take his entrance exams and got through with the alternative method, but the pass is 50% for his entrance exam :P
If you're up for a challenge, (or tonnes of funny analogies) defs go for it :)

Hi,
I am currently in year 10 and doing methods 1 & 2. My school generally doesn't do that well in methods, though. So I am looking for an extension program to lift my score. I heard of Dr He through friends at school. I could not find him online, though. I was wondering whether he is still tutoring, his price and whether he takes term 4 entrances. Thanks so much for your help.

P.S. I do not need to sit the exam.

Hi, I heard of Dr He from a reindeer who did Specialist maths through his course. I was just wondering if he would be able to teach you spesh if you are not doing it at school as I want to learn it and my school will not allow me to do spesh through the school. Does anyone if he teaches the full specialist course or how his course works (are there tests).

Any info on the course would be appreciated
