📖📖📖English Tips📖📖

Top Tips

📖 Read your texts.

I know it's annoying, it’s just like people telling you to drink water - you know you should do it and everyone says it…..but whether or not you do……
Do it, don’t be stupid and put yourself at an automatic disadvantage.
Whether you read 5 or 100 pages a day, GOOD JOB, you are beautiful and thank you for giving yourself a chance to succeed.

📖 Read essays. Read big essays, little essays, red essays, blue essays.
Expose yourself to as many essays and writing styles as possible - believe it or not, it will change the way you write and think about how to respond to prompts.

📖 Write essays. Whether you write an essay a day, or an essay a week or even an essay a month just write essays. Get them marked. Improve, IMPROVE, I M P R O V E. You got this.

📖 Mark essays. This will change the way you write your essays. When you mark essays your being analytical and critical. When you write you essays you’ll be aware of what the difference is between a good essay and a great essay all because you have been exposing yourself to a different way of thinking.

📖 Learn from your mistakes. Make note of errors and what you need to improve on. Need to incorporate quotes more? Write it down. Research. Improve. Need more complex ideas? Write it down. Research. Improve.

📖 Expand your vocabulary. I’m not going to tell you to read the dictionary, but if thets your style...you do you boo.But what I will sayis; Come across a new word? Write it down. Have a notebook for this. Learn to use as many different words. In your essays you don’t need to use massive words like defenestration or equanimity…sorry that might actually be a good word to use. WHAT IM ATTEMPTING TO SAY IS -
complex ideas and simple words > simple ideas and complex words

📖 Research your texts. Know everything there is to know about your texts. If you find that a text is about gender inequality or loneliness, research online about those topics, read online reading guides on the book and start forming ideas about the text

📖 Get better presentation skills. Watch TED Talks, read A+ oral presentations. Research effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills aimed at persuading a target audience. Practice your presentation skills. Video yourself. Be critical. Improve. Practice your speech to death but practice with your expression you don't want to sound like a robot. Know it so well you can make eye contact with everyone. Pretend you’re on TV, Pretend you are Obama make that speech gosh darn AMAZING

🧠🧠🧠Psychology Tips🧠🧠🧠
Huge thanks to Ionic Doc for taking time out of their exam filled day to contribute to this post! Their contributions can be seen in green
(Also super sorry i went MIA the last few weeks :o)

Top Tips

🧠 Like any subject, set a goal. What are you willing to put in to get there? How hard are you willing to work?
Set a goal, break it down into smaller goals, and into smaller goals until you have small things you can do everyday to work towards your goal.

🧠 Ask questions. I think I wrote this in a previous thread but get into the habit of once a week or every class have a few questions to ask your teacher. Ask questions about ANYTHING your unsure about or want explained further.

🧠Do checkpoints. If you’re learning about mental health work through the checkpoint questions on mental health. “Checkpoints are great for this subject. In preparation for a SAC or just applying what you've learnt. Great for revision as well. Make sure you do checkpoints throughout the year”

🧠 Praccy exams are your best friend. Psych is an application subject so Even if you’ve answered a question in checkpoints, DO IT AGAIN because chances are you’ll have learnt more AND if a similar question appears on the exam you gonna be prepared for it. You have nothing to lose in redoing exam questions. This also applies to worksheets and any questions you can get your hands on!

🧠Make your own notes + visuals
Make your own notes so you can understand in-depth about what you have learnt. Making visuals such as posters is also a great way to see how things work/operate in psych

🧠 Make sure you know key command words
Psychology isn't purely based around definitions but knowing command words is a must.
Eg:  Long Term Potentiation: Long-lasting strengthening of synaptic connections in neurons.
- In this example, the command words would be the words underlined. Command words are important for describing certain aspects in Psychology and examiners/teachers often look out for them
.

🧠 Constantly Revise
Psychology has a fair bit of content. It's important to keep on coming back to what you've learnt so that you don't need to cram during exam period. If it's hard to revise during the term, make sure you take the time to revise during school holidays.

🧠 Learn from your mistakes. Make note of errors and what you need to improve on.  Keep making mistakes on the stages of sleep? White down every question you get wrong. Revise material and redo questions make sure you know all the stuff your strong in but work hard in your areas of weakness

🧠 Flash cards. They are helpful in remembering small chunks of info AND they are portable! Got a 30 min bus ride where all you do is stare out the window listening to music? FLASH CARDS! Wanna enjoy the sun but need to study? FLASH CARDS! Sitting in the waiting room waiting for your dentists appointment? FLASH CARDS!
Point being they are easy to use, portable and are so so so helpful for remembering stuff!

🧠Try to avoid working from your laptop like the internet is awesome but try studying from your textbook or your notes. If your anything like me having your laptop right there will almost always lead to watching youtube and on study score calculators

🧠Youtube can be amazing for study as long as it doesnt lead to procrastination. Crash Course and Khan Academy are awesome study tools

🧮🧮🧮Maths Tips🧮🧮🧮

Top Tips

🧮Don’t slack off the study. Many students find the first SAC ot two easy and stop studying but seriously you’ll be shooting yourself in the leg if you do this. Work at a constant pace and you’ll be set.

🧮Complete practice exams. They are an amazing resource and by far one of the best ways to improve and maximise your score.

🧮Aim to understand everything in depth not just formulas

🧮Don't think your teachers and textbooks will give you everything you’ll ever need to do really well. Textbooks gloss over things and teachers prioritise somethings over others so I’d highly encourage you to use external resources like tutors, online content, lectures or the forums here.

🧮Do praccy exams. As maths is an application subject the best way you can consolidate your knowledge is through exam-style questions. Focus on the ones more than 50% of people get wrong because you have a higher chance of making a mistake too, personally I don’t see a huuuuuge benefit of doing LOADS of easy questions that 90% of people get right. If you have the time do praccy exams till you run out of them.

🧮Learn how to do everything really quick on your calculator. All the SACs and exams will rely on the fact you know how to work things out using your calculator.

🧮Have a fantastic bound reference but by exams try to be able to not rely on it, in an exam you will waste too much time flipping through ur bound ref trying to find a formula.

🧮Make the most of your teachers. Ask your teacher heaps of questions or if you find you struggle to understand the way your teacher explains things go ask another maths teacher

🧮Document your errors. I’m personally a fan of having a seperate book where i write down every question ive gotten wrong, where i went wrong and what the right answer is. This is handy as it is more beneficial to improvement rather than stressing over scores and telling yourself ‘i have to get above 90%’ like work hard, but work harder in your areas of weakness.

⚖️⚖️⚖️Legal Studies Tips and Resources⚖️⚖️⚖️
Top Tips
⚖️Engage in Class - ask questions, get feedback and not only contribute to class discusion but create them - ask about current cases or past cases or how the topic you are learning applies to real life

⚖️Apply to real life - this will solidify your understanding of all aspects of the legal system including appeals, mitigating/aggravating factors, benefits and limitations of jury trials. Continuously exposing yourself to the media about cases will not only benefit your understanding but also the language you use when discussing and analysing cases.

⚖️Make sure you know your instruction words! These are so so key in Legal Studies - for short answer questions you can use the acronym SEE -
S – Make a statement
E – Explain that statement further
E – Provide an example to qualify your statement if at all possible.

And for more in-depth questions;
1. Identify the task words, like describe, evaluate, or analyse.
2. Look for focus words which may limit or help refine your response, like ‘other than… method x’, ‘always… better.’
3. Determine how many parts there are to a question. Higher marked questions usually require students to answer multiple parts.
4. Use the layout of your question to structure your response. You should always start with the first part of the question posed.
5. Use the keywords from the question in your response. For example, ‘significance…’ or ‘difference’
6: Signpost your response. For example, if asked to evaluate the jury system you should begin with something like; ‘One strength of the jury system is…’

⚖️Teach each other! Form a study group of 3 - 4 people and each week allocate a topic, over the course of the week you need to become an ‘expert’ on the topic and create notes on your topic. At the end of the week, you teach each other - you will not only gain more in-depth knowledge on 4 topics in less time than if you did it yourself you also get 4 sets of topic notes!

⚖️Do practice questions continually throughout the year - it is likley your teachers will structure the SAC’s similar to the exam so you will require the ability to answer short answer and extended response questions that could range from 1 mark to 11 marks! So it is crucial you develop and improve your clarity of writing and consolidate your knowledge. Practice questions also allow you to see your areas of weakness

⚖️Use the study design - make sure you have notes/knowledge of each dot point in there as well as the SKILLS. Many students focus on the content but ignore the ‘Key Skills’ which you can be examined on.

⚖️Cue cards/palm cards/revision cards - easy to take around with you and allows you to memorise key terminology and legislation. If it works for you you can even put easy practice questions on there

⚖️EVIDENCE - Just like English you should have evidence to support what you say, a great piece of evidence is relevant legislation, if you KNOW the legislation you have nothing to lose by including it
