ANU or UoM for Bachelor of Science?

(1/1)

AX:
I'm really conflicted and don't know which university to choose. I have a sufficient ATAR for a Bachelor of Science course at either uni. I live in Melbourne city, so Melb Uni is obviously more convenient, but I also like the sound of ANU's campus life and moving is not a problem.
Does anybody have opinions on the science courses offered at these two unis?

Pros for ANU:
Can do double science and music (I'm interested in composition)
Living on campus

Cons:
Small city
Music program isn't very reputable

Pros for Melb Uni:
Close to family
Near the city, very convenient, good restaurants, entertainment, etc.

Cons:
Can't double with music
Can only do Diploma of Music (practical)

Also, if anyone has insights on ANU's music program (specifically piano & composition) that would be very helpful as well. Thank you!

As I see it, the fundamental question here is as to whether or not you want to stay local for university or move interstate. Both science courses are obviously of good quality so that's not a factor to distinguish between them.

If you're very keen on doing music subjects but you'd prefer to remain in Melbourne, you can always take MUSI-prefixed units as breadth to satisfy that. It won't give you any degree qualification (as ANU's double with music would) but it will definitely give you some academic experience to see if you want to further pursue it as a Diploma or in further degree study. This has the benefit of giving you time and experience in an area of study before committing to actual formal study in that area.

I suppose you could also live on campus in Melbourne but I figure that'd be a bit redundant haha

If possible, I'd advise that you attend open days at both universities (even if ANU is a pain and a half to get to for just an open day) and see what both are like outside of the considerations of study - that's a separate decision in and of itself. Besides, would you rather be studying a course you very much enjoy at a university that doesn't really suit you, or a course that fits you a little bit less at a university that you like attending ever day (or thereabouts)?
