Can we use dashes in our writing?

Like these ‘-‘ things in our essays that are used kinda like commas. Are they considered informal? Will an assessor mark you down for using them?

Yes, you can use them! My yr12 english teacher actually told me to start using dashes in my essays. (maybe don't flood your essays with them, but they look fancy when used in moderation imo)

I think it's fine. I used them mostly in the introduction and no one marking my essays said anything about it.

I use them regularly - to make the sentences that need to be a bit long, not so long - and no teacher has ever mentioned that I shouldn't. So I don't think so. (This includes a trial exam marked I think by an actual proper examiner.) :)
