What ATAR do you need for your first preference?
« on: December 05, 2019, 08:41:44 am »
As per the title! I reckon there'd be a fair bit of variety.

For most of Year 12, the courses I were looking at required a 50-60 ATAR if any at all. When I submitted my preferences, the required ATAR of my first preference was around 86 (I had an almost-literally last-minute change of mind). But then I changed my preferences again after results were published haha.

How about you? What are you hoping for?

My first preference is the advanced science research degree at monash clayton which, since I qualify for monash guarantee requires a 90 atar.
This only recently became my first preference however. Previously I had Melbourne uni's bachelor of science as my first preference which wanted a 85 atar.
I am feeling pretty confident in ym ability to get the 90 atar to get into my course but you can never be sure.

My first preference is the Bachelor of Physiotherapy at Western Sydney University, which requires an ATAR of 95. I’m not too confident to get this, which is why I hope to get an offer for the Bachelor of Science at University of Sydney, which requires an atar of 80.
Previously, I had wanted to get into physiotherapy at the Australian Catholic University, but I just don’t think it is the right University for me. It might sound silly, but at the moment I’m desiring bigger universities with a larger campus if that makes sense. However I still have it in my preferences, just in case I change my mind. I also had UNSW bachelor of science as well, but changed it to usyd  since transport is much less of a hassle, and I’m loving it’s campus ;D.

My number 1 VTAC preference is science chancellors scholars at Melbourne Uni, which I know with 100% confidence is out of my reach. 😅 I just wanted to fill up all 8 spots.

My (legit) top preference is Bachelor of Science / Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Melbourne, which requires a 98.50 ATAR. I’m fairly confident in getting in — my school’s predicted ATAR for me is 99.10 and my own prediction is just above that — still, I’m really nervous because I want to be able to get in comfortably with room to spare.

VCE: Literature [50] Methods [50] Further [48] Chemistry [40] Biology [33]
2022: Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Economics) @ ANU

Gotta admit, same here. One can only dream :)

My practical first preference is just a plain Bachelor of Science with an ATAR of 85. Out of interest, how does your school predict an ATAR? I've never heard of that practice, do they just take your teachers' VTAC predicted grade for each subject and use that to calculate your predicted aggregate and hence predicted ATAR?

Ummm, I’m not too sure of the behind-the-scenes process to be absolutely honest. At our school, we can apply to find out our predicted ATAR through our VTAC/career advisors, but there are hoops you have to jump through — generally only students applying for med or interstate universities can actually get theirs. I was lucky as I did the UCAT so I fell into the “applying for med” bracket.

Taking a wild guess, I think it’s calculated through comparing my rankings in each subject to how students with similar rankings scored in the previous cohort, then combined to form the predicted ATAR. But I can’t be sure.

With your amazing scores and how you went on UMEP, I think you’d easily get into most if not all the graduate degree packages UniMelb offer! Is there a reason why your actual first pref is just science by itself? (Just out of curiosity, not saying you gotta change anything 😊)

Good luck to you for results day!

Thank you. Honestly, I don't really have any interest in law or medicine etc. The only one I was considering a bit was the Data Science graduate package. But it's not something I'm crazy about. I'm going for a Major in Maths (perhaps Mathematical Physics), and I'll see where I want to go from there. I might change my Science to Science/Data Science - on the off chance I do go into it, it'll make it slightly easier. Good luck to you too!

I need at least an 80 to get into Melbourne Uni's Bachelor of Arts course. But this was only recent. At the start of the year I didn't need an ATAR for my then, desired cause, RMIT Fine Art. Luckily, though I still did my very best even though I didn't really need to if it all depended on a good folio. I then went to a holiday program where we got a taste of what the fine arts course was going to be like, and I didn't feel this was my oath anymore. It was so scary to change my decision close to the VTAC closing date.

But, this was amazing, as I walked home from the fine art taster thing, I was thinking of a Bachelor of Arts since I also love psych and English, and omg, I saw a guy wearing a UoM jumper and he walked right past me as I was debating on whether to switch over. So i did, and if that was not a sign, I don't know what is ❤️❤️

I hope every does well (:

Correct. This is just a marketing strategy by UniMelb, not actually a course offer. You should only start receiving those after Thursday.
