Is it hard to get into a University Extension Program?

I was told that you have to get a certain score to apply to an Extension program and I just want to know if it's true.

If also, which extension program is better, Monash, Deakin or Melbourne?

To gain entry into a uni extension program, you need to get approval by the school and uni. As long as you have a B+ average across all your subjects ( it's okay if you're getting Cs or Ds in one subject but make up for it in the others), and A-A+ average in the pre-reqs subjects ( i. e. Vce psychology for uni psychology) you will probably be accepted. Select-entry schools and some prestigious private school tend to a bit stricter with their requirements in that you need an A average across your subjects.  If you are doing 3/4 in Year 11, a high 30s study score will suffice for acceptance. You also need a reference from a teacher. This info applies for melb uni and probably Monash.

In terms of comparison between the programs offered by different unis. Deakin offers a limited range of subjects (health and psychology), but if that peaks your interest that's good because you can do it online which saves travelling time. Melbourne uni offers the widest range of subjects ( pretty much everything) and it's free ( apart from maths). Monash is good, but doesn't offer an as wide range as melb uni (barely has any humanities subjects) and you have to pay for it (like $800 or something like that). Just have a look around at the subjects on offer, pre-reqs and see if the location is convenient for you.

Good luck!

Hi! I'm doing uni maths at monash this year and I'd say the "requirements" to get in are more of a formality than anything. Everyone who applied pretty much got accepted. (That being said though, if you did the 3/4 of the subject in question the year before, they only take the 40+ kids - i.e applying for uni maths in 2015 required a 40+ score in methods in 2014 or just average grades if you didn't take methods 3/4 that year. )(Which is kind of questionable, but that's how the system works))

Also, as far as I'm aware, the uni subjects at monash are free as well haha
I'm going to have to disagree with you on the 40+ statement since I have a friend currently doing Uni Maths at Monash who undertook Methods in 2014 who scored below 40 (raw) but still made it into Uni Maths at Monash so it's possible to get in still!

The extension subjects at Monash do require a fee of $450 per semester.

Also, the person I spoke to at the start of the year said that only roughly half the people who applied got accepted (this is for Monash).

@OP there's always the option to apply for all three unis and then decide which one (or ones) you prefer - this is what I did. You could even attend a few classes for a more informed decision.

I just saw this thread and I have a question for my friend then. If they wish to do a UMEP subject (I know you mentioned Monash before), would they need a 'high' SS for that 3/4 subject to get in? (provided that the 3/4 subject is a pre-requisite)

Regardless of whether the 3/4 completed in year 11 is a pre-req or not, you need high 30s (38+). Even if it’s a pre-req, as long as you get 38+, that should suffice.

There's people in my class who didn't even do MM3/4 in 2014 and still got in.

They want more students to do it, they'll be pretty lax fmpov :)

Ah yeah of course! I was just referring to kiko98's comment on 40+ scores for Methods but agreed on what she said about getting into uni maths without doing Methods beforehand!

I did a UMEP subject last year, got in with 40+ in 3/4 Psych and did UMEP Bio the next year, so you don't have to get 40+ in a relevant subject (you don't even need 40+ at all). It's just to help determine which students get a place because so many apply, so I guess it's more about being competitive (wow haven't heard that before -_-). Also, I was doing 3/4 Bio in the same year as UMEP.

If you do end up doing UMEP, you can choose to attend lectures at the uni or at a close school but some of these schools charge a one time fee of $500 so just be weary of that. Otherwise it's totally worth it, since you can gain credit for the subject when you start uni so you can do one less subject.

Sorry for the bump. If I got 45 raw in methods this year, will they (MUEP Maths) accept me even though i borderline kinda failed chem, got avg b+ to c+s for englishes (had to juggle englang and english) and accounting. Did 2 heavy 3/4s that took a lot of time from these subjects.

Grades for 1/2 Physics (thinking of replacing 3/4 physics with muep maths) and AGM (spesh) were very very good. (90+%)
