Relate the shape and surface area of the bronchioles to their function

They have a tube like shape and are wide to move higher volumes of air through them to the alveoli. They divide into smaller bronchioles increasing the surface area for increased volume of oxygen passing through.

At very low concentrations Adrenalin causes an artery to dilate. At higher concentrations Adrenalin causes the same artery to constrict. How can these different effects be explained?
A. There is one type of Adrenalin receptor that activates two second messenger pathways
B. There are two types of Adrenalin receptors, with different affinities for Adrenalin, that activate two different second messenger pathways
C. There are two types of receptors for Adrenalin that activate the same second messenger pathway
D. At higher concentrations Adrenalin can pass through the plasma membrane and directly stimulate contraction within the cell

You need to use more cause and effect type language. You've described both the shape and function but not really connected the two. Use words like this allows them to.. or resulting in... or similar.

Hi,

I have a prac test SAC in next month and I was wondering what we had to do for it. Is it like a test on a prac we do in class or will we have to write up a report (aim, discussion etc.)?
It's usually similar to a normal test format but the questions will be things like interpreting results graphs or saying what the aim/hypothesis is etc. Check with your teacher as it does vary between schools but that's what that sac usually is.

Yep! Regardless of your knowledge of adrenergic receptors/adrenalin, the mention of high vs low concentrations here is really indicating that the affinity of receptors plays an important role here. A doesn't mention anything about affinities. C is incorrect as the same pathway would not lead to different cellular responses (+ again doesn't explain concentration differences) and D is wrong simply cause adrenalin is not hydrophobic (but also low concentration response isn't explained).

The circulatory system is made up of an increasingly complex and small system of blood vessels call capillaries which can only fit one red blood cell through at a time. Suggest a reason for why such small blood vessels increase the efficiency of oxygen and nutrient supply to cells.

Capillaries provide a large surface area over which the exchange of materials between the blood and the body cells occurs. The structure of capillaries (small lumen) is suited to slowing down flow of blood and maximising exchange of chemical substances. Thin walls of capillaries only one cell thick allow for efficient and easy diffusion. The higher the surface area to volume ratio the faster the diffusion of substances into the cell. They have a high surface area to volume ratio increasing the efficiency of oxygen and nutrient supply to the cells.

What should be included in a biology practical report/ write up for dialysis (using cellulose tubing, iodine solution, glucose solution, starch solution) practical?
What can help in getting extra marks?

Hi guys,

I have a practical sac soon on enzymes.  We already did the two experiments which is about placing pectinase in apple sauce to break down the pectin, and seeing its affect from different temperatures and pH's.  Does anyone have any idea on how to study for this? 

Our control for the temperature experiment was distilled water (was placed in the apple sauce) and for the pH it was distilled water as well.

I would appreciate it a lot if anyone replied!!

does the methyl guanine cap initiate translation and the poyl a tail signals to the ribosome when the process of translation should be terminated

Make sure you understand what role each component is playing and show your understanding of diffusion through using that specific terminology :)

- make sure you have your experimental design understanding ready to go (e.g. understaning the role of a control)
- also be ready to link your results to the theory about enzymes & denaturation

Either is accepted. If you wanted to play it safe, you can always say the thylakoids of the grana.

No, knowledge of the numbers of inputs/outputs is not required.

Hi, can someone help me pleaseeee

We recently did an experiment to investigate enzyme activity. The experiment used catalase (from the liver) as the enzyme and hydrogen peroxide as the substrate. In all 4 test tubes there was hydrogen peroxide added. On test tube A there was sand ( i guess to act as control group), in test tube B there was a cube of liver, test tube c there was grounded liver and sand, and testube d had boiled liver. What I don’t understand is why did the test tube c contain both sand and live? Like I understand that live contains enzyme catalase but what is the purpose of sand?
